Tianjin Jingyuan - Puyi's Residence of 'Waiting for the Right Moment' | Municipal Preservation

|Municipal Preservation. Jingyuan is located in the Heping District of Tianjin (within the former Japanese Concession), and was built in 1921. Originally named Qianyuan, it was the residence of Puyi, the last emperor of China, from 1929 to 1931. He renamed it 'Jingyuan', which means 'to observe changes quietly and wait for the right moment'. Many significant events in Puyi's life took place here. It was here that his last empress, Wenxiu, escaped and divorced him; here that he secretly sold many precious cultural relics brought out from the Forbidden City; here that he lived a Western-style lavish life with his last empress Wanrong, yet treated the remnants of the Qing dynasty as servants in a traditional Chinese manner; and it was here that he conspired for a long time with the Japanese spy leader Doihara Kenji, and eventually sneaked off to the Northeast, becoming a shameful traitor to his nation. He lived in 'Jingyuan', but his heart was never 'quiet'.
