Sakura planted by the Shogun The first sakura trees on the site of Ueno Park were planted by the legendary Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose appointment as shogun began the Edo period (1603-1868). A busy alley The main alley stretches for about half a kilometer from the main entrance past the zoo and museums. About half of all the sakura trees in the park grow along it.
