Sensoji Temple, also known as Asakusa Temple, is one of the oldest and most famous Buddhist temples in Tokyo. It was founded in 645 AD, making it over 1,300 years old. The temple was built to dedicate to Kannon Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who is highly revered by the Japanese people. According to legend, two fisherman brothers found a statue of Kannon Bosatsu in the Sumida River in 628 AD. Although they tried to return the statue to the river several times, it always came back to them, leading them to believe that the statue had divine power. Later, a local landowner built Sensoji Temple as a place to worship this Bodhisattva. Sensoji Temple has several important buildings, such as the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), which is the symbol of the temple and features a large iconic lantern. This gate is the main entrance leading to Nakamise-dori, a pedestrian street filled with shops and souvenir stalls. The temple is also the center of important festivals like the Sanja Matsuri, held every May. This is one of the most famous festivals and attracts a large number of people.
