Where to Go for Christmas: A Unique Experience at Yellowstone

Cost: Approximately $2.2k for two people over six days. Summary: Stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, affordable lodging, and simple American cuisine. I had always planned to visit Yellowstone, but my first attempt was thwarted by a sudden mudslide, forcing me to turn back. During Christmas, I finally fulfilled my wish and witnessed a completely different landscape. Park Access: Yellowstone is relatively quiet in winter with fewer tourists. Only the North and West entrances are open. The North entrance allows self-driving, offering close encounters with wildlife such as bison, moose, foxes, and wolves, though we regrettably didn't see any bears. Note that bison tend to cross roads at sunrise and sunset, causing delays. We were stuck for over an hour in the morning and moved at a snail's pace for about an hour in the evening as a herd walked along the road. A guide mentioned that an adult bison could toss a person several meters, so it's wise to be cautious. The West entrance requires joining a tour, with options for bus or snowmobile rides, both needing reservations one or two months in advance. The park's scenery is even more enchanting than photos suggest, with snow adding tranquility and beauty. Unfortunately, the Grand Prismatic Spring wasn't visible, but we saw many other hot springs and geysers up close. Personally, I found Old Faithful a bit overrated. The sulfur smell is less intense in winter, making the experience more enjoyable. Two days in the park are sufficient, but since you can't travel back and forth through the park to the North entrance, you need to drive around from outside, which takes about three days due to slippery mountain roads. Those with extra time can enjoy nearby skiing, though it's pricier and crowded. Accommodation: Prices are much more affordable than in summer, with comfortable lodging around $150, conveniently close to the park entrance. Dining: Only a few restaurants are open during Christmas, mainly offering American cuisine. We tried bison and moose burgers, which adventurous eaters might enjoy. If driving, consider bringing your own gourmet food and fresh produce. #ChristmasTravel #NatureScenery #YellowstoneNationalPark
