Xi'an City Shuyuanmen Pedestrian Street

Shuyuanmen Pedestrian Street is located on the east side inside the South Gate, extending east to Anju Alley and connecting to Sanxue Street. In 1592, scholar Feng Congwu, a native of present-day Chang'an County, resigned from his official post and returned home to lecture at Baoqing Temple. Later, a new site was established on the north side of the street, where Guanzhong Academy was built, often accommodating up to a thousand students, making it a renowned institution. The academy was later destroyed. Feng Congwu sat here for two hundred days before he died. During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, large-scale reconstruction took place. It is now Xi'an Normal School, and the site is well-preserved. The street is named after the academy's gate. Yu Youren once lived at No. 32. At the west end, there is the Hua Pagoda of Tang Dynasty's Baoqing Temple. In 1991, the street was renovated to retain the Ming and Qing architectural styles and was developed into a cultural and tourist street.
