Gulangyu Island is located at the southwest corner of Xiamen Island, facing Xiamen across the sea, with only a 600-meter wide Lujiang River separating it from Xiamen Island. It takes a ferry about 4.5 minutes to reach the island. (Now, it takes about 40 minutes to circumnavigate the island.) With an area of 1.87 square kilometers and a population of over 20,000, it is currently under the jurisdiction of Siming District. The climate on the island is pleasant, resembling spring all year round.
