A bottle of electrolyte drink costs 10 yuan, which is reasonable. Rent your tent in advance at the visitor center. A double tent for an overnight stay on the summit costs about 120 yuan. If you wait too long, you won’t get one. ⚠️ It’s only 7 or 8 degrees at night on the summit, so bring a fleece even in summer. Wake up at 5 AM the next day to see the sea of clouds—that view makes every sore muscle worth it. 2️⃣ Yuncheng | Shanxi What’s most amazing about Yuncheng Salt Lake isn’t that it looks like the Dead Sea, but that it changes color under different lighting. At 10 AM, it’s greenish; at 6 PM, the sunset turns it pinkish purple. 📍 Navigate to the salt lake viewing platform, not directly to the salt lake, or you might end up in the mining area. Wear slippers; the salt crust on the shore is hard, and walking barefoot hurts. Nearby, there’s a shop selling salt compress packs for 30 yuan each—great for shoulder relief. ⚠️ After 3 PM, the wind picks up, messing up your hair for photos. Wearing a hat is the best solution. 3️⃣ Yichun | Heilongjiang Tangwang River forest and strange stones aren’t a spot to rush through. Spend at least four hours here to understand what it means when “trees grow on stones, and stones hide in the forest.” Take the electric cart to the deepest part first, then walk back to save energy. The gaps between stones are narrow, so don’t bring a big backpack—it’ll get stuck when squeezing through. 🍜 There’s a stall selling grilled cold noodles at the park entrance, 8 yuan a serving, 12 yuan with sausage and egg. It tastes better than some city restaurants. ⏰ Late September is the best time to visit. Fallen leaves cover the boardwalk, crunching underfoot. 4️⃣ Chenzhou | Hunan Don’t plan Gaoyiling and Dongjiang Lake on the same day, or you’ll be exhausted. Gaoyiling is best early, around 7 AM, when the light hits the red sandstone at an angle, making the patterns look like they were carved by a knife. The boardwalk is one-way; once you finish, there’s no going back. Visit Dongjiang Lake in the afternoon, especially between 4 and 6 PM to see the mist over Little Dongjiang. The fishermen’s net casting is a scheduled show—don’t miss it. Mangshan’s Wuzhifeng Peak is better for those with average stamina. The cable car takes you straight to the top, and a short boardwalk walk offers panoramic views. 🚄 Taxi from Chenzhou West Station to Gaoyiling costs about 40 yuan, or 20 yuan by carpool. 5️⃣ Xining | Qinghai Ta’er Monastery and Dongguan Mosque represent two different faiths: Tibetan Buddhism and Islam. Visiting both in one day will give you a completely different understanding of the city. It’s recommended to hire a guide at Ta’er Monastery for 80 yuan; otherwise, you’ll only see the golden roofs and butter sculptures without understanding their stories. Avoid visiting Dongguan Mosque on Friday afternoons during prayers to respect worshippers. ⏰ After 3 PM, Ta’er Monastery is less crowded. Light filters through the prayer hall windows, and you won’t have to wait to take photos. 📍 Take bus 909 from Ta’er Monastery back to the city for 3 yuan. Avoid unlicensed taxis. 6️⃣ Jiaxing | Zhejiang Many people hesitate between Wuzhen and Xitang. My answer is simple: if you have time, visit both; if not, choose Wuzhen. The night view of Wuzhen West Scenic Area features unified lighting designed by management. Lights come on at 7 PM, making the water town look like it’s coated in gold. Xitang feels more natural and lively. It’s free to enter before 6 AM, but the narrow streets get crowded and hard to walk through later. 🍜 Wuzhen’s Ding Sheng cake costs 3 yuan a piece, served warm with red bean filling—more authentic than other snacks in the area. Xitang’s Guan Laotai stinky tofu is 12 yuan a serving, crispy outside and tender inside, worth the line. ⚠️ Both towns’ inns have average soundproofing. If you’re sensitive to noise, stay outside the scenic area for half the price. 7️⃣ Suizhou | Hubei Dahong Mountain doesn’t impress at first glance; you need to explore it. Ginkgo Valley is the star in autumn, from late October to early November, with yellow leaves covering the ground like a golden carpet when the light hits. But don’t just focus on the ginkgo trees—the caves in the mountain are worth exploring. The cave temperature stays around 18 degrees year-round, so bring a jacket in summer. 📍 Take a shuttle bus from Suizhou Bus Station to Dahong Mountain for 15 yuan. The trip takes about an hour. If driving, the mountain roads are winding—new drivers should be cautious. ⏰ It’s best to stay overnight. The stars in the mountain sky are much brighter than in the city, and you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. 8️⃣ Luoyang | Henan Plan to visit Longmen Grottoes in the morning. Why? Because in the afternoon, the sun shines directly on the Buddha niches on the west mountain, making it hard to look up at the huge Vairocana Buddha. After the grottoes, don’t rush off—visit Baiyuan across the street, Bai Juyi’s tomb garden. It’s quiet and less crowded. Laojun Mountain and Jiguan Cave are in Luanchuan, far from the city, so reserve a full day. Wangcheng Park is very local—great for peony viewing in spring or casual walks, but not worth a special trip. Guanlin is the burial site of Guan Yu’s head.
