A Fortress in Yanqing | Yongning Ancient City

Yongning Ancient City, whose establishment began in the Tang Dynasty, was set up as Yongning County under Tuan Mountain in the twelfth year of the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty (1414 AD), taking its name from the phrase 'its peace is everlasting' in the 'Book of Documents'. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the Gui River meanders past, and in ancient times, it was known as 'the fence of the nation'. The old Yongning City was a standard fortress, a military stronghold in the Great Wall defense system. There was a city gate on each of the four sides, north, south, east, and west, and each gate was equipped with a barbican. The east gate was called 'Yinghui Gate', the west gate 'Zhenning Gate', the south gate 'Xuanen Gate', and the north gate 'Weiyuan Gate'. The north-south central axis intersected with the east-west central axis at the current roundabout location - the Jade Emperor Pavilion. The city we see now has been extensively remodeled later on, even if the city walls have not been rebuilt, nor new city gates constructed.
