Yak time! Tibetan cuisine is heavily dependent on yak meat and milk. We tried it in several places in Lijiang and Shangri-la, Yunnan and had what seemed to be an authentic meal in The Silent Holy Stones in the old town of Shangri-la. It was my mother's first time to try hotpot, and it was really good (though with the odd inclusion of crinkle-cut french fries amongst the more traditional ingredients). We also had yakmeat dumplings and a flatbread with yakmeat inside, both of which were delicious. It's not very vegetarian-friendly, I'm afraid. If meeting yaks sounds better than eating them, you can find a couple of very docile ones on the main square in front of the temple, and a tout will probably find you and offer you the chance to sit on its back for a photo. You can also rent traditional Tibetan dress if you're so inclined (we did neither).
