Fengguo Temple was built in the ninth year of the Liao Kaitai period (1020 AD) by Emperor Shengzong of Liao, Yelü Longxu, to commemorate his mother, Empress Dowager Xiao (yes, the same Empress Dowager Xiao who was deeply hated by the Central Plains dynasties). It is a royal temple in the true sense of the word, a millennium-old temple. Fengguo Temple is one of the three great Liao structures still existing in China (the other two being Huayan Temple in Datong and Dule Temple in Tianjin). Inside the Mahavira Hall of Fengguo Temple, there are the oldest existing colored clay sculptures of the Seven Buddhas in China. The Mahavira Hall is ancient and majestic, showcasing royal grandeur; the seven original Liao dynasty giant Buddhas inside the hall have withstood a thousand years of wind and rain and still shine brightly. Additionally, the reverse-seated Guanyin and Weituo statues from the Ming dynasty, as well as the archways and murals from the Qing dynasty, are also highlights.
