Zhiwu Ancient Village, Suixi, Guangdong.

The history of Zhiwu Village can be traced back to 1275 AD, established by the ancestor Yuan Chang who migrated from Futian County, Fujian. The overall appearance of the village is well preserved, with a rectangular layout. The houses are built facing south, with flat land behind the village and fields in front. The topography is hilly and sandy, and the villagers are all of the same surname. A large number of ancient buildings in the village were built during the Song, Qing, and Republic of China periods and the modern Anti-Japanese War period, with a heavy historical imprint and a simple and natural style. The traditional architecture of Zhiwu Village is generally Leizhou residential buildings, with red brick houses in the Ming and Qing architectural styles being more common. There are more than 10 ancient houses still in existence. Zhiwu is also a revolutionary old village with a glorious tradition. As early as the end of the 19th century, the villagers of Zhiwu Village participated in the Suixi people's anti-French struggle and became anti-French volunteers to protect their homes and the country. During the Great Revolution, Communists spread Marxism-Leninism and progressive ideas here, organized the establishment of the Zhiwu Peasant Association, and the villagers enthusiastically participated in the Suixi Peasant Army and joined the struggle for the complete liberation of the peasants. During the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War, the majority of villagers in Zhiwu Village, under the leadership and guidance of the Communist Party of China's South Road Party Organization, actively participated in the Anti-Japanese Salvation Movement and resisted the Japanese invaders and the great cause of people's liberation. Many revolutionary martyrs emerged, such as the martyr Zhi Renshan, the commander of the Second Column of the Guangxi Border of the People's Liberation Army of China, and Zhi Yaoguang, Zhi Qiuyang, and Zhi Dong. The Yizhi Public Ancestral Hall in the village is the former site of the Zhiwu Branch of the Suixi Youth Anti-Japanese Comrades Association and is a key cultural relic in Suixi County. In 2023, Zhiwu Village was selected as the sixth batch of traditional Chinese villages.
