Edam, the cheese town
#Sign up for tripbestJuly Hotel Tester
Edam is the hometown of cheese. It has been slowly formed from a small settlement since the 12th century. It is also known as the North Sea fishing village. It has a Dutch style and cultural essence. It is a characteristic town with canal scenery and rich medieval history.
I came here for the cheese market that is only held in summer. Because there is no similar market in Hong Kong, it is eye-opening. As soon as I arrived, the strong aroma of cheese could not be dispersed. The local cheese sales are not just for taste, or boring buying and selling. Whether it is the display of goods, the participants, or the transaction arrangement, it is like a show. The interaction of the crowds present is the focus of attention, and the enthusiasm and vitality of the continuation of tradition and culture.
If you don’t go during the market time, there will not be too many tourists in the whole town, and you can also feel the beauty of tranquility.

It’s more than cheese 🤩
Explored Edam, Netherlands — a hidden gem with totally different vibes and photogenic! 😎🍃
Top Spots to Visit
Edam Cheese Market (Kaasmarkt, Edam):
Only on Wednesdays (10:30 AM–12:30 PM) — This is not only cheese heaven but also a spot for epic sceneries, with the market bustling in front of historic Dutch facades and canals. I lucked out and stumbled in without knowing, which made it extra magical (definitely check the schedule before going!). You get to taste legit Edam cheese and soak in vibrant traditions plus charming views everywhere you look.
Trip Tips & Useful Info
Getting Around: the town is walkable, also can rent a bike for more Dutch scenery.
Food Vibes: In Edam, sample fresh cheese at the market stalls and also at the established stores — bring cash. e-Payments are limited to a few stores
Camera Hack: Bring your phone! Adjust settings for light/clouds — even iPhones grab incredible detail here (I tweaked mine to make the colors crisp!).
Check weather: Edam’s markets are rain or shine, but outdoor photos look best after a little drizzle or in full sun.

[Netherlands] Edam Cheese Market: Full of History, Take It Home and Share!
#2024travelwishlist #travelinspiration #attractionphotographyguide #weekendtour #overseastourism #checkin #checkinplace #goodplacestocheckin #goodplaces #goodfood #cheese #travel
There is an ancient cheese market in the Netherlands. I visited it last year. Edam Cheese market Kaasmarkt Edam is a traditional event held every summer on Wednesday morning. Farmers can be seen transporting round red and yellow cheeses to the market by boat or horse-drawn carriages, and then professional cheese carriers move them to the scales and trade with buyers.
I think this scene is very interesting and historical. I can also taste different types of Edam cheese. The texture and flavor of cheese are very unique. Some are salty, some are sweet, some are rich, and some are light. My favorite is the cheese with herbs or pepper. It is delicious when eaten with bread or fruit. I also bought some cheese as souvenirs and took it home to share with family and friends. If I have the chance in 2024, I will definitely come here again.
In addition to the cheese market, the small town of Edam is also worth a visit. There are many ancient buildings, such as churches, museums, and castles, which are all very distinctive and charming. We also took a tourist boat to enjoy the scenery along the beautiful canals and experience the Dutch style. I think Edam Cheese market Kaasmarkt Edam is a great tourist destination to experience Dutch culture and food, and I highly recommend it to everyone.
