Nestled in the South Pacific near Fiji and Australia, this island nation is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, indigenous tribes, active volcanoes, and world-class diving. On this trip, I visited the capital, Port Vila, and checked into a truly unique accommodation—Hideaway Island & Marine Sanctuary Resort. It’s not on the main island, but sits on its own private islet that you can only reach by boat, giving you that ultimate "isolated from the world" vibe. · -- 🚤 Transportation: A Short Boat Ride to Another World Upon arriving at the pier, the resort sends a private boat to pick you up. The ride takes just about 1 minute—it’s that close—but that single minute is all it takes to leave the hustle and bustle behind. As the boat approaches the island, you can see the ocean shift from deep indigo to crystal-clear turquoise, so transparent that you can spot the coral reefs and schools of fish below. That's the moment it hits you: "I'm really in the South Pacific." · -- 🍹 Accommodation: Simple, Clean, and Welcoming The lodging on the island isn't your typical luxury resort; it's a simple, rustic wooden cabin style. The rooms aren't huge, but they have all the essentials: a bed, a fan, an electric kettle, a mosquito net, and basic storage space. Bathrooms and toilets are shared, but during our stay, they were kept impeccably clean, and we never had to wait in line. During check-in, the staff hands you a welcome drink (a chilled glass of juice). It’s a simple gesture, but it feels incredibly warm and welcoming. ⚠️ There is no Wi-Fi on the island, nor are there TVs. If you're used to scrolling on your phone 24/7, you might need to adjust your mindset. But honestly, that's the beauty of this place: you can truly put your phone down and just focus on listening to the waves, stargazing, and chatting with the people around you. · -- 🍽️ Dining: A Bit Pricey, But Good Variety There’s only one restaurant on the island. The menu leans towards Western cuisine: burgers, pasta, fish and chips, curry rice, salads, etc. We ordered the fish and chips and a chicken burger. The food was decent and hit the spot, though nothing overly spectacular. As for the prices, they are indeed on the higher side (which makes sense since all supplies have to be shipped over from the main island). If you're traveling on a budget, I highly recommend buying some snacks, bread, and drinks in Port Vila before heading over, to keep on hand for breakfast or late-night cravings. · -- 🤿 Activities: It's All About the Ocean The biggest selling point of Hideaway Island isn't the accommodation; it's the water activities. Glass-Bottom Boat The resort normally offers a glass-bottom boat tour where you can marvel at the underwater world through the floor. Unfortunately, it was temporarily suspended during our visit, so I recommend checking with the resort before you go. Diving There's an on-site dive center with certified instructors, making it perfect for beginners. If you already have your diving certification, you can simply rent the gear directly. Snorkeling — Highly Recommended! This was hands down our favorite activity on the island. The resort rents out snorkeling gear, including masks, snorkels, fins, and life jackets. It’s incredibly easy to do: just walk to the water's edge where it's shallow (about knee-to-waist deep), and you can dive right in to snorkel. No need to take a boat or hire an instructor—you can jump in whenever you feel like it. The waters of the South Pacific are exceptionally clear, offering incredible visibility. Floating on the surface, you can see coral reefs, clownfish, schools of tropical fish, starfish, and even small sea cucumbers with your own eyes. As the sunlight pierces through the surface, creating dancing shadows on the ocean floor, you literally feel like you've been dropped into a giant aquarium. ⚠️ Note: The seabed is made of coral reefs, so don't step on it barefoot, or you could easily get cut. Around 5:30 AM, it was still dark, but the eastern sky was already starting to blush red. We walked over to the beach on the eastern side of the island, found a dry spot to sit, and quietly waited. The sky transitioned from deep indigo to purplish-red, and then to a brilliant golden yellow. The moment the sun peeked over the horizon, the ocean was bathed in an orange-gold glow. Visited Vanuatu for a short trip! Took a whole day, day trio around the island stopping at main destinations. There are tours but I stead we took a private taxi and made our own itinerary. the whole day cost 24000 Vatu. Rarru Waterfalls - a short walk from the car park and you have a natural pool and a larger waterfall and some smaller cascades tumbling down. Swimming and jumping in and rope swings are a must. If doing it again I would go here for longer and perhaps take a picnic and spend half a day. Blue Lagoon - another beautiful natural swimming whole. The salt and fresh water meet and the water is a turquoise delight! we stopped at a few beaches on the way round - Eton And Sara beach. the restaurant at Sara Beach did a buffet lunch selection of local food ( a handful of dishes between two, and plated fresh to order rather than sitting out- driver can eat free with you). it was 1500vatu pp. Most stops cost 1500 which is not too bad when you can go and swim and there are toilets and people standing by the waterfalls etc for safety (I'm not sure how good they would be in an emergency but they are there to help). although please be warned we took a photo at Eton beach and they charged us 500vatu!!! for a photo stop. I was not pleased about this. It is a natural spot with no toilets etc... We passed through cultureal villages. Sadly as we went on a Bank Holiday we couldn't stop at the cultural centre but I would have loved to do that. Another day I recommend the museum in Port Vila with the guided tour. 1500vatu. Vanuatu is a place where the beauty of nature is appreciated but left without modification. Most people in Port Villa have basic English or above. Good and Beverages- a cup of coffee will cost you between AUD $3.50-5.00. Most meals are AUD $25.00-$35.00. I found the best way to save money is to shop at the supermarkets leave snacks/drinks in your room. The people are friendly and happy. They are always helpful in directions. The food is quite good in the majority of places I ate. The temperature in April is quite humid. Not sure if it was made worse by my time of life! The cultural centre was amazing! You will get a crash course in island medicine followed by singing and walking on hot rocks (performed by a warrior). You can then pose for photos with the locals who wear traditional clothing. The whole experience was eye opening. The cultural centre also tries to engage and support the Vanuatu youth on the island to continue their culture. Banana Bay was a lovely place to stop after Blue Lagoon, or on your way to Blue Lagoon and the turtle sanctuary, the coffee and food is great! The view, to die for! An undisrupted view of the blue and aqua surf. Honestly the best view in Port Villa. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The Turtle Sanctuary was struggling with high tides when I visited. The baby turtles were in a concrete dish to keep them from the rising water levels. The ocean was being affected by a cyclone in the Solomon Islands. Three months ago the Sanctuary decided on a “No Touch” rule for the turtles. They explained that sunscreen tourists wear was harming the turtles. Tourist used to be able to swim with and feed and pat the turtles. This is no longer the case. It is still wonderful to see baby turtles. I personally was enraptured by the 100 year old turtle at the sanctuary. The Beach Club was a real treat. I gathered a group from my villa to attend the Friday night fire twirling at the Beach Club. If you want to sit at a table and eat, book early! We ordered pizza and sat on the small benches on the sand and waited for the show. We watched the sunset and ate pizza. The whole set up was easy to navigate. The fire show was free and awe inspiring. The many performers, both male and female put so much effort into their performances. The twirling and flame throwing and the funny acting throughout had the audience on their feet. A must do when here. A bucket is passed around at the end for you to pay what you feel it was worth. I was happy to contribute. Buying from the markets on a day where a cruise ship is in will cost you. All shopping should be saved for days we’re there is no cruise ship. The mark up is intense. However, paying AUD $25 for a souvenir tshirt is the average. Most trinkets like magnets and keychains are AUD $5. Bussing it. I chose to take the buses everywhere. Sitting with the locals and watching them interact with each other was wholesome. I don’t believe there is road rules, just a tip for those thinking of loaning a car. The bus from Tropicana Resort to town was AUD $1.50 on days without the cruise ship and AUD $2.00 on days with the cruise ships. I would suggest downloading a cruise tracker before coming to Port Villa so you can track which days will cost more. Just a cautionary note about the buses. Machetes are allowed on buses. As a westerner I was not prepared for a large local man to enter the bus with a monstrous rusty machete. Apparently this is a regular occurrence. The locals carry their machetes to other properties to perform gardening works. Do not internally or externally freak out! All is well. All in all it was an amazing experience. As a middle aged woman on my own I felt safe most of the time and was able to enjoy my time without being harassed by anyone.

Here’s a real, no-frills two day Vanuatu itinerary based on exactly how we did it. Day 1 was all about getting out into nature and properly slowing down. We woke up in our little bamboo villa tucked into the hills and just sat there for a minute taking it in. Nothing but green jungle and ocean in the distance. It felt quiet in a way you don’t really get at home. First stop was Eden on the River. If you want somewhere peaceful, this is it. Clear running water, thick tropical trees overhead and walking tracks that make you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. The water is cool but so refreshing once you’re in. We swam, floated and just chilled out on the rocks for ages. After that we drove out to the Blue Lagoon near Eton. The colour of the water actually looks fake. Bright turquoise and ridiculously clear. There are rope swings if you’re feeling brave and it’s deep enough for a proper swim. Go earlier in the day if you can, it’s way better before it gets busy. We finished Day 1 back in Port Vila with a slow walk along the waterfront. Nothing fancy, just watching the boats, feeling the breeze and letting the day wind down. Day 2 started at a beach bar right on the sand where I had the best iced coffee I’ve ever had. Proper strong coffee, heaps of ice cream and cream on top, and that ocean view straight in front of us. It was simple but one of those moments you don’t forget. Then we headed to Hideaway Island and this was easily one of the highlights of the trip. The snorkelling was unreal. So many fish everywhere you looked, bright colours, coral, and crystal clear water. And yes, you have to go to the underwater post office. It’s such a random but cool experience sending a waterproof postcard from under the ocean. We wrapped everything up at Waterfront Bar and Grill and honestly it ended up being the best meal of the whole trip. Get the snapper. It was a 10 out of 10. Perfectly cooked, fresh and exactly what you want after a big day in the sun. Two days in Vanuatu and it didn’t feel rushed. Just clean water, warm air, good food and space to breathe. Its capital, Port Vila, exudes warmth and rustic charm rather than glamour. It's also brimming with nature and has a delightfully fresh air. I entered the country via Fiji and visited on my way back to Sydney. It's about a 15-20 minute drive to the city center. Taxis are available, but shared taxis are more convenient for tourists. Since you're sharing with people going in the same direction, fares are low and convenient. The best part is being able to chat with locals, even on short trips. ・Getting around the city and the kindness of the people 🕊🌱 The main way to get around Port Vila is by shared bus (minibus). Vehicles like Toyota Hiace roam the streets, and fares vary depending on the destination and distance. Sharing with locals allows you to experience a slice of local life you won't find in tourist areas. But then, something unforgettable happened. I lost my passport while I was there. Losing your passport overseas can be nerve-wracking. I was at a loss, so I asked a passerby for help, and a local person kindly helped me search for it. When I found it safely, I was overwhelmed with emotion, and truly felt how kind the people of Vanuatu are. ・The city's state and reconstruction 🏘️ Parts of downtown Port Vila are currently closed due to the recent earthquakes. It's heartbreaking to see the cityscape still in the process of reconstruction, but as someone from Japan, also prone to earthquakes, I could relate to many of the experiences. If you want to escape the crowded and expensive tourist spots of Vanuatu follow this guide to the most remote and untouched places this country has to offer! We explored Efate which is the most populated island in Vanuatu. Saint Lawrence Beach We caught the public bus to Siviri Village for 500 vt each. We gained access to the beach through the Whispering Palms resort where we met a lovely local who let us in for free. The beach is completely untouched and super remote, located on the north-west part of the island and offers pristine water and lovely private place to relax. To get back you need to stand on the road and hail down a bus, thankfully our friend from the Whispering Palms recommend we go to Top Rock. Top Rock This snorkelling paradise is located just 10 minutes from Saint Lawrence Beach in a village called Saama. The spot offers coastal lookouts, snorkelling and a local restaurant for 3000 vt each. Blue Lagoon The blue lagoon is a popular touristy spot on Efate however the entry fee is pricey! We were told by a local to enter via the 2nd or 3rd entrance to gain access for 1/3 of the price! We paid 500 vt each and spent another 500 on lunch from the local village where we had the best chicken and rice meal of our lives! Evergreen Cascades These beautiful cascades are located just out of Port Vila and cost 1500 vt to access. The spot was serene, offering multiple swimming spots and beautiful waterfalls. Getting Around We used public buses which are vans with a red B on the number plate to get around on the first few days. We then hired a Quad Bike from On Wheels for $200 AUD for 2 days. The quad bike was a lifesaver and meant we could access many more spots and explore the island freely!

Next stop is the Turtle Bay to see sea turtles in the nature you can do snorkeling here and Vanuatu Iguanas which are climbing up to your body. I originally planned to go to Oeschinen to see the lake, but the cable car stopped due to heavy snow. When I was going down the mountain, I passed by Blausee and was torn about whether to go or not (because I saw that the reviews were polarized). Ahhh, the Blue Lake after the heavy snow is still so beautiful, it exceeded my expectations. Highly recommended.
