2024 Ejin Horo Banner Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Ejin Horo Banner is located on the southeast Ordos Plateau on the northeast edge of the Mu Us Sandy Land. Ejin Horo means “the Lord’s Enclosure” in Mongolian and is named for the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan located within the Banner. Ejin Horo was formed from the consolidated Zhasake and Junwang Banners. The area under those banners is the historic pasture land of northern ethnic minorities. Among Ejin Horo’s cultural sites is the archaeological site of the Zhukaigou culture; the well-preserved remains of the Great Wall built by the Qin dynasty during the Warring States period; the royal residence; and temples like the Taohai Zhao and residence of the Great Living Buddha. Beautiful natural attractions include the lake wetlands of Hongjiannao’er and Qigainao’er and the unique local mix of sand, water, forest, and field.

🏨 Natrail Hotel 🏨
This hotel is a unique resort that combines natural scenery, aesthetic origins, fabric culture, and home decorations from nomadic cultures around the world. It is located 4.8 km west of the Ada Line in A Town, Ejin Horo Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia. Here are some of its features:
- Architectural style: Inspired by three native buildings in Ordos—yurts, adobe houses, and cave dwellings—the exterior walls are made of local soil and gravel aggregate, giving it a unique local style. The rounded corners and parapet walls give the building a soft appearance, while the slightly slanted walls are thick and solid, suitable for the cold local climate.
- Interior design: The polished concrete tones of the interior are consistent with the outdoor earth walls, while leather, wool carpets, and cashmere bed blankets are the main elements of the soft furnishings. The open washbasin and dressing table, and the spacious and upright room layout reflect the strong and generous character of the nomadic people.
- Public areas: The hotel has public areas such as an outdoor swimming pool, pool bar, and bonfire lounge area, providing guests with a variety of leisure and entertainment venues.
- Cultural experience: Not only is it a place to stay, but it is also a museum full of world nomadic culture and a library full of books, allowing guests to explore Inner Mongolia's cashmere culture up close. The way of life here has infinite possibilities.
It's not Saudi Arabia! It's in Inner Mongolia! So comfortable!
Can't believe I stayed in the same hotel as Divas Hit the Road in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, in Inner Mongolia.
✅ The exterior is a simple yellow mud wall, but the interior is jaw-droppingly luxurious!
There is also an outdoor swimming pool and bonfire, which is very romantic at night.
✅ I really can't get enough of this desert-style hotel! The wabi-sabi style room is super big, with a total of five rooms, each with a small courtyard, where you can gather, chat, and drink tea. There is a resort-style outdoor swimming pool in the courtyard, which is very photogenic.
✅ The room facilities are excellent! The toiletries are Acqua di Parma. The whole room is antique, and there is plenty of fruit and mineral water. Breakfast is a la carte, with Western milk and Mongolian milk tea to choose from, and the portions are so large that you can't finish them! The taste is also great~
✅ The location of the homestay is also amazing! It's a few kilometers away from Kangbashi New District, Ordos, and it's a ten-minute drive away. We also went to see the Grand Theater, Library, and Museum, which were quite impressive!~
Two days and one night to experience the charm of Ordos.
🌇 Although it was a rushed business trip, I took the opportunity to experience the unique style of this city. The sky in Ordos is as blue as a sapphire, and the clouds float in the sky like cotton candy. There are vast grasslands, and the blue sky and green land meet, making people feel particularly comfortable.
💖 After work, I went to the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan. A sense of solemnity and solemnity came over me. The buildings here are unique, and the yurt-style palaces are magnificent. The golden glazed tiles shine in the sun. Every building and every cultural relic tells the legendary story of Genghis Khan. This is not just a play, but a dialogue with history.
🌅 The next morning, I was awakened by a ray of sunshine and started a new day of travel. I came to the Xiangshawan Tourist Area, a desert world full of fantasy. As far as the eye can see, the rolling sand dunes shine with golden light in the sun. I experienced the exciting desert motorcycle, and the feeling of speeding made my blood boil. In the melodious sound of camel bells, I felt the tranquility and mystery of the desert.
🥙 In the evening, I took the time to taste the special food of Ordos - hand-held meat. The tender lamb, with its simple cooking method, retains the deliciousness of the meat to the greatest extent. Take a bite, and you will feel full of happiness. Paired with mellow milk tea, the salty and sweet taste dances on the tip of the tongue.
🥰 Although the two-day and one-night trip to Ordos was short, it left a deep impression on me. There are beautiful scenery, delicious food, and enthusiastic people here. I have always been full of longing for Inner Mongolia, longing to gallop on that land and feel the magnificence and freedom of nature. I look forward to starting my trip to Inner Mongolia next time. 💖

Genghis Khan Mausoleum in Ordos | Witness the Legacy of the Great Khan!
In Ejin Horo Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, there is a Genghis Khan Mausoleum, which is the second batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
The Mongolian nobles practiced "secret burial", and outsiders found it difficult to find the burial site. Moreover, in present-day Mongolia, the Great Burkhan Khaldun has always been revered as a sacred mountain, and it is also believed to be the birthplace and burial place of Genghis Khan. According to legend, Genghis Khan ordered 800 years ago that no one except members of the royal family be allowed to enter Burkhan Khaldun Mountain. How could there be a Genghis Khan Mausoleum within the territory of Ordos today?
In fact, the Genghis Khan Mausoleum in Ordos is more like a cenotaph or a memorial site. During the reign of Kublai Khan, the Han system was adopted in Dadu to build the Temple of Heaven, which was divided into eight rooms. In the early Ming Dynasty, the Northern Yuan Dynasty continued to use the eight-room system of the Temple of Heaven in Mobei. After the middle of the Ming Dynasty, as the Mongols moved into the Hetao region and then into the interior of the Hetao, they established the "Eight White Rooms" and placed 500 households of the Darhat tribe to guard them. This place was called Ejin Horo. In fact, it is not the burial place of Genghis Khan, but a place where sacred objects such as bows and arrows, saddles, and portraits are enshrined.
During the Anti-Japanese War, the Eight White Rooms were moved westward to the Ta'er Monastery in Qinghai. In 1954, they were welcomed back to Ordos and a palace-style mausoleum was built for permanent enshrinement.
🏯The Genghis Khan Mausoleum has two gates. It is recommended to go to the gate at the visitor center first, as this is the core viewing point of the Genghis Khan Mausoleum. The other southeast gate is not far away, and there are historical sites inside. If you are not tired, you can also take a look. There is a sightseeing car at the entrance, which costs 10 yuan per person.
🏯It is recommended to hire a tour guide when visiting the museum in the north. A quick glance will not help you understand history. Tour guides can be booked at the visitor center, and the fee is 120 yuan if I remember correctly.
🏯The core of the Genghis Khan Mausoleum is the palace in the mausoleum garden. The main structure consists of three Mongolian yurt-style halls and corridors. Photography is prohibited inside. The palace displays many cultural relics, each with Mongolian characteristics. The walls are painted with many historical stories. The tour guide will introduce them as you walk along, making each historical period feel震撼and mysterious. The historical sites at the southeast gate are impressive sculptures and Mongolian yurt-style palace tents.
Visiting the Khan Mausoleum will allow you to learn about the life of Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan was the founder of the Yuan Dynasty, and his era belonged to the Great Mongol Empire. (Genghis Khan's name: Temujin) Temujin led 300,000 people to conquer over 40 countries and 720 tribes before his death. He traversed the entire Eurasian continent and established the Mongol Empire, which covered 30 million square kilometers. He was also an outstanding politician and military strategist, and the faith of the Mongols. At that time, there were over 100 major and minor sacrificial activities held here each year.
🎫Tickets: Adults 150-170 yuan, depending on the season. Children's tickets are generally half price based on height, free for children under 1.2 meters. Tickets can be purchased at the visitor center or through various apps.
🚗Travel time: It takes 2 hours to drive from Baotou to the Genghis Khan Mausoleum, and about 3.5 hours from Hohhot.

Half grassland, half desert - even Genghis Khan chose this place.
Ordos originated from the name of a tribe, which was the direct line of Genghis Khan during his lifetime. After the death of the Khan, they were responsible for guarding the mausoleum and offering sacrifices. When you come to Ordos, you must visit the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan, pay homage to the hero of the generation, and listen to the guide tell his legend.
Half of it is a desert, with yellow sand all over the sky. It's exciting to ride a jeep in the sand; the other half is a grassland. The boldness of the Mongols, the boldness of the horseback nation, can be instantly appreciated from the costumes, the eyebrows, or the performances on the grassland.
The mutton on the grassland is tender and not woody, fat but not greasy. It can be boiled in white water or braised in brown sauce. Generally, tourists from the mainland have not eaten it.
Ikh Juu League Prince's Mansion, Ordos
The Ikh Juu League Prince's Mansion, also known as the Ikh Juu Prince's Mansion, is located on the west side of Wangfu Lane, Wangfu Road, Aletengxire Town, Ikh Juu Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The mansion is the only intact prince's mansion in the seven banners of Ordos, and the best-preserved prince's mansion in the central and western regions of Inner Mongolia. The Prince's Mansion was built in 1902 and completed in 1936, with a total area of 2,105.79 square meters and a total construction area of 1,040.44 square meters. The mansion is divided into two courtyards, with a soil city wall built around the courtyard. The front yard was built in 1931 and the back yard was built in 1936, with a total of 16 residences. The overall building uses brick, wood, and stone structures, integrating the architectural styles of Mongolian, Tibetan, and Han nationalities, showing strong ethnic and local characteristics.
The Prince's Mansion was originally the fief of Elinchen, the leader of the Ordos tribe and the 20th generation grandson of Genghis Khan, and later became the private residence of the Prince's Banner Zasak. Due to the hereditary succession of the princes of the past generations, the mansion has been relocated many times. Finally, in 1902, after the 14th generation Zasak of the Prince's Banner, Tugus Alatan Huyaktu, succeeded to the throne, the mansion was officially moved to its current location. In the 17th year of the Republic of China (1928), the 15th generation Zasak of the Prince's Banner, Tubshengjirgledor Prince, began to renovate and build the mansion until it was completed in 1936. In 1988, the People's Government of Ikh Juu Banner announced the Prince's Mansion as a key cultural relic protection unit in the whole banner; in 1996, the Autonomous Region People's Government listed it as the third batch of key cultural relic protection units in the whole region. In 2013, the Prince's Mansion was officially opened to the public, becoming a tourist attraction and carrying out patriotic education activities. In recent years, the Ikh Juu Banner Cultural Tourism Group has created a series of mansion cultural brands centered on the Prince's Mansion, including cultural creation, performing arts, catering, etc., aiming to activate and utilize historical and cultural heritage and promote the high-quality development of the cultural tourism industry.

The hotels in Inner Mongolia have reached the next level, like an oasis in the desert
Who would believe this is in Inner Mongolia! When I posted on social media, everyone thought I was in Morocco 🇲🇦
✨ Recently, I checked into an amazing luxury wilderness hotel—Natrail Ji Wai·Rong, located in Ordos, and I must share my experience with everyone!
🌟【Price and Package】
When they first opened, they offered a package for 2666 yuan for two nights, which is incredibly cost-effective! The package includes two nights in a king bed/twin bed/small suite, a bottle of Yellow River Collection wine, a free minibar, two days of breakfast for two, and one dinner for two. When I went during the May Day holiday, there was no extra charge! The entire hotel has only 5 rooms, each about 80 square meters, so it comes out to around 1300 yuan per night, which is a great deal compared to other Ji Wai hotels!
🛏️【Stay Experience】
The hotel's style is perfect for taking photos, every shot is Instagram-worthy. The first floor has a public lounge area, a library, and a swimming pool. The rooftop lounge area even has a barbecue pit. Each room has its own courtyard. The king and twin rooms share a living room, and the fireplace in the living room cost 200,000 yuan! The small suite has its own private living area, which I personally recommend.
The minibar snacks include Yellow River Collection beef jerky, sparkling water, and Fino coconut juice. The white wine tastes amazing. There are two coffee options: capsule coffee and drip coffee, and the tea comes in a separate canister. The kettle is from the brand Smeg. The room also comes with a welcome fruit basket, and breakfast is à la carte. The butler confirms the next day's breakfast in the service group chat the night before. I really liked the yogurt, it was delicious and I highly recommend it!
📍【Location】
The hotel is in Yijinhuoluo Banner, about a fifteen-minute drive from the airport and about 4 kilometers from the film city. There's also a farm nearby where you can pick fruits, and it's close to the Ordos Museum and the Yihe Buddhist Culture and Art Center. However, if you want to visit Xiangshawan, you'll need to cross districts, but you can rent a car and drive there.
In short, my experience at Natrail Ji Wai·Rong in Ordos was fantastic, and I highly recommend it to everyone!
Feel the majesty of Genghis Khan's Mausoleum
Genghis Khan is a representative of outstanding historical figures, unifying the Eurasian continent! The combination of yurts and the massive cavalry camp is truly indescribably shocking! For a moment, it even feels like being there at that time! The sense of oppression is particularly real!
The park environment is particularly good! This mausoleum is to commemorate Genghis Khan! Inside, there are restored yurts from that time, and the guide starts explaining from the entrance! Overall, it's very good! A great place to bring kids to experience history!
It's still very hot in Inner Mongolia during the day! But the shady places are particularly comfortable!
Rebirth: Blessings to the Princess in This Life
In every place, I must check out the traditional costumes of each ethnic group. When I came to Inner Mongolia, naturally, I had to experience the charm of the Mongolian robe. I feel that my frame can still support this big robe, but friends who are relatively petite may need to cinch their waists tightly.
Palace Series Little Experience Sharing:
💛 At the Mongolian Origin in Ordos (also known as Ordos Cultural Industry Park), which I introduced in my Moments a few days ago, it is a replica building of the Yuan Dynasty's capital system, with an enhanced palace feel, suitable for taking grand and luxurious princess photos.
💛 There is a place to rent clothes in the small wooden house on the left when you enter. Basically, it's 99 yuan per set of pure clothes, and if you want makeup and photography, it's an additional cost. We chose the 399 yuan package, which includes 8 retouched photos and 25 raw photos.
💛 My set was shot by a photographer with a small beard on his chin. His composition and scene selection were excellent. After seeing the other friends' photographers, they were just average. Friends in need can take note.
💛 The hardest thing to evaluate in travel photography is the photo editing skills. Although I have gained some weight recently and my face is a bit chubby, the template-based retouching is still not quite right, and it looks somewhat fake. Anyway, the effect is as shown in the picture. If you don't look closely and just want to enjoy the fun, it's still acceptable.
Ordos Riverside Impression Homestay | A Perfect Encounter
| A Perfect Encounter. In Ordos, I discovered a newly opened divine homestay—Riverside Impression.
✨As soon as I stepped in, I was stunned by its high-end decor, with every detail exuding sophistication.
🍱The buffet was a huge surprise, offering a rich variety of dishes, each bite a delight.
😲What was even more unexpected was that it was equipped with a gym and laundry room, how considerate!
💕Especially the French romantic-themed room, the romantic atmosphere was off the charts.
The hotel's facilities are top-notch, with excellent value for money👍, and the WiFi is super strong, allowing you to surf the internet smoothly anytime.
🌳The surrounding environment is pleasant, located at Dalhut Road, Yijinhuoluo Banner, Boyuan Liuhuwan, making it very convenient for shopping and dining.
The room is simply amazing👏, not only very likable but also particularly spacious. The provision of snacks and red wine added a lot of warmth.
🧼The key is that it is clean and tidy, making the stay very reassuring.
There are various room types to choose from, there is always one that suits you.

The Great Genghis Khan!
Genghis Khan Mausoleum is located in Yijinhuoluo Town, south of Ordos City, Inner Mongolia. After Genghis Khan's death in 1227, a secret burial was conducted, and his relics were enshrined to form the original spirit palace. In the mid-15th century, the related palaces were moved to Ordos and then experienced several relocations. In 1954, the Genghis Khan Mausoleum was invited back to its original place and a new commemorative mausoleum was built, which is today's Genghis Khan Mausoleum.
The main structures of the Genghis Khan Mausoleum include the archway, Genghis Khan's bronze statue, Altan Gandal aobao, the mausoleum's main hall, and the Sulede altar. From the square of Genghis Khan's bronze statue to the mausoleum, there is a spacious and tidy stepped walkway. Each section of the walkway consists of nine steps, with a total of eleven sections, adding up to ninety-nine steps in total. The Mongolian people regard '9' as a lucky number and consider ninety-nine as the largest number. The ninety-nine steps, like a ladder to the heavens, symbolize good fortune and prosperity; from a distance, they also resemble an endless river, signifying the 'eternal river' of 'Mongol' (Mengke·Guole) created by Genghis Khan, which has a long history and will last forever.
The Genghis Khan Mausoleum is a sacred place for the Mongolian people, retaining national characteristics, with rich and strictly regulated sacrificial activities. The true location of Genghis Khan's Mausoleum remains a mystery, and the existing mausoleum serves as a cenotaph carrying the nation's reverence and commemoration.

Jiangnan's 'Peach Blossom Land' on the Plateau - Jinghong Tianqing Hotel
Ordos Plateau is rich in resources and has a rich cultural heritage. The collision and integration of Mongolian and Han cultures here fully showcase the northern boldness and ruggedness. In this land of abundance, people have higher demands for clothing, food, housing, and transportation, and richer aspirations for the types of consumption. Jinghong Tianqing Hotel was born out of such expectations. Like a Jiangnan lady standing gracefully in the bold desert, like a hero's tenderness as gentle as water, it creates a 'Peach Blossom Land' in Ordos.
The hotel is located at the intersection of Khan Street and Darhut Road in Yijinhuoluo Banner, Ordos City. It enjoys a private garden of 10,000 square meters, isolated from the city's hustle and bustle. Pavilions, bridges, water pavilions, winding corridors, and exquisite bamboo and wood, every view is a scene, offering a poetic Huizhou-style experience and celebrating a new Chinese lifestyle. Such a poetic and picturesque place to stay and dine is unique in Ordos!
The hotel has 99 various types of characteristic rooms, accommodating 150 people. The rooms feature luxurious Chinese-style decoration, complemented by a full set of high-end hotel facilities, such as Kohler sanitary ware and Mu Si mattresses, ensuring a comfortable and pleasant stay for you.
The hotel has 14 dining private rooms with high-end Chinese business decoration, equipped with solid wood tables and chairs, high-grade bone china tableware, etc., meeting your high-end business reception needs. The private rooms are located in the secluded garden, meeting your privacy and quiet needs. The hotel also has banquet halls and conference rooms of various sizes, accommodating 500 people for dining, meeting your high-end business banquets and group meeting needs, and is the best choice for high-end weddings!
The hotel kitchen is divided into two parts: Huaiyang and local cuisine. All ingredients for Huaiyang cuisine are sourced from the origin of the cuisine, with high-paid famous chefs from the origin, bringing you the original flavor of Jiangnan! The local cuisine kitchen mainly features Chinese and Mongolian styles, satisfying your 'Yimeng stomach'!
The hotel is a new-style new store, but its management has been rooted for many years. All middle and senior management personnel are professional management teams who have been deeply involved in the service industry for more than ten years, with a deep understanding of local guests' preferences. The team has also gone abroad for training many times, ranking among the top in Ordos hotels in terms of reception level and service ability. Therefore, it has undertaken many municipal reception tasks. Since the city implemented the policy of optimizing the business environment, almost all important business guests have stayed at this hotel. This is not only an affirmation of our Jinghong Tianqing but also an encouragement to us. We will continue to rely on the unique garden-style hotel to create higher-quality special services and become a shining signboard in Ordos's catering and accommodation industry!

Alexander~Anderson-Daniel Ordos Travelogue 51 - Ordos
Date: 20240513-20240516
Although the flight was delayed by 4 hours, it doesn't get dark here until 8 pm, so I went straight to the Mongolian Origin Scenic Area.
'Ordos' means 'numerous palaces' in Mongolian, and indeed, I felt it right away.
In fact, 'The Origin of the Mongols' is a historical book written by Sanaqchen in the Qing Dynasty, completed in 1662, and is an extremely important work in the development of Mongolian historiography.
The next morning, I walked along the Ulamburen River, rising with the sun.
Besides the waterfront walkway, there are also several kilometers of huge murals along the banks.
After crossing Bridge No. 3, I intended to stroll through the Kangbashi District and come back via another bridge. I realized that was a mistake, as I would end up limping.
So I decisively turned back. Isn't the Mother's Park next to where I was staying delightful?
According to old Mongolian customs, no one can find the burial place of Genghis Khan.
So when I learned that this city has a mausoleum of Genghis Khan, I thought it was a far-fetched infrastructure project by the wealthy local government.
I was superficial. In fact, the name of this city is because of Genghis Khan. 'Numerous palaces' is a broad term, specifically referring to the 'White Eight Palaces (Tents)', and 'Ordos' is the name of a tribe specifically responsible for guarding the relics of the Great Khan.
In 1649, Erenchin, the 20th generation descendant of Genghis Khan from the Ordos tribe, was appointed as the Dorbet Juren King by Emperor Shunzhi of the Qing Dynasty and became the first leader of the Ikh Juu League.
Today, the area around the Prince's Mansion has been turned into a square, with an elegant canopy nearby.
The museum, worth visiting for its appearance alone, is also rich in content.
Ulan Mulun Square, located at the southern end of the central axis of the Kangbashi District, boasts the largest musical fountain in Asia and is famous for its dazzling night scene.
But I didn't see it, as I was staying 30 kilometers away in the Dongsheng District.
In recent years, many people have called Ordos a 'ghost city' because of its many buildings, wide roads, few people, and few cars. That's because they don't know that Dongsheng District has always been the real city center, and it still is.
I personally think that even the district government building is much nicer than the city government building with a pair of kissing horses standing at the entrance.
Further north, there is the seventh largest desert in China, the Kubuqi Desert. I have long admired the Lotus Hotel, which charges over 3000 yuan per night. If you can't afford it, you're not allowed in, and can only admire from afar.
Looking at the map, I designed a route that crosses the Kubuqi Desert.
The open-pit coal mine, one of the 'four treasures of Ordos' - sheep, coal, earth, and gas - is also on the route.
The Dongsheng District Museum has been renamed the Ordos Bronze Ware Museum, as there is a classification of 'Ordos-style' bronze ware in the industry. These bronze wares appeared no later than those in the Central Plains, are numerous, and come in a wide variety. However, unlike the Central Plains, which focuses on ritual vessels, they emphasize practicality and portability.
Yikezhao League is the old name of Ordos City, starting from 1649 and ending in 2001. Yikezhao Aobao, built in 2015, is known as China's number one Aobao, standing 57 meters tall and overlooking the entire Kangbashi District.
Donghonghaizi Wetland is located across the river in Yijinhuoluo Banner, meaning 'Holy Lord's Mausoleum'. The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan, the Origin of the Mongols, and the airport are all here.
