Hampton Court maze was planted as part of the gardens of William III and Mary Il in the late 17th century. This makes it over 300 years old and the oldest hedge maze in Great Britain. The maze was originally part of the Wilderness - which wasn't as wild as its name suggests. The Wilderness was a formal garden of high hedges where courtiers could wander and get enjoyably lost. They would have followed the same paths that you have today to get to the centre of the maze. Hampton Court maze was the first puzzle maze in the UK, with a choice of paths, twists and dead ends.
