At the summit, the wind is strong and chilly. Wearing only summer clothes will leave you shivering. Thin-soled shoes are especially unsafe on the slippery stone steps. ⛰️Tour route options There are two ways to explore. Choose based on your needs. 📍Leisure version: Take the sightseeing bus directly to the upper station, then transfer to the cable car to the summit. Before the trip, I tried to find Russian-language guides or YouTube videos about Mount Emei. The result? Almost nothing. It seemed like most tourists only went as far as the Buddha in Leshan and then moved on. Spoiler: they were wrong. Emei turned out to be one of the highlights of my China trip, and now I'll tell you how to get there without unnecessary headaches. 1. Where to Stay We stayed at Le Meridien Emei Mountain, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The main advantage is that the hotel is within walking distance (10 minutes) from the Baoguo Temple Visitor Center, where the climb up the mountain begins. There are also hot springs on the hotel grounds; your legs will thank you after the climb. I recommend staying for two nights to really rest after the climb. 2. What to bring? Even if it's summer down there, things are completely different at the top. We were there in early June, and the temperature at the top was only 12°C. A warm sweater or light jacket would definitely be a good idea. 3. Start of the route It all starts at the Baoguo Temple Visitor Center. We bought tickets in advance on Trip.com for the earliest possible time, as there were significantly fewer people. After 10:00 AM, crowds of local tourists were already visible. As in many places in China, you don't need to show a separate ticket; your passport is required. After entering, head to the buses. There are several, but you need to take the one that goes to the final stop, Leidongping. You can't miss it; everyone gets off there. The journey takes about an hour and a half. It's very beautiful, but winding, so if you're prone to motion sickness, it's best to take a pill beforehand. Testing your balance on the road is a dubious endeavor. 4. Walk to the Cable Car From Leidongping, the walk begins, lasting about 30 minutes. The route is uphill, with some steps in places, but nothing too extreme. Along the way, you'll find stalls selling various treats and restrooms. And here you'll find local celebrities—monkeys. And if you think they're just sitting cutely in the trees, you're sorely mistaken. They won't hesitate to snatch a bottle of water, a bag of food, or any other edible trophy from a tourist. So keep your treats to yourself and don't provoke the furry bandits. 5. Cable Car At the end of the hiking trail is the cable car station. If you purchased an all-inclusive ticket, just show your passport. Otherwise, you can buy a ticket at the ticket office on site. The climb takes about 10 minutes, and the views outside become more beautiful with each passing minute. 6. Golden Summit After exiting the cable car, follow the signs to the Golden Summit for about 10 minutes. The main attraction—the majestic golden statue of Samantabhadra—appears before you. Don't rush to take photos and leave. Be sure to stroll around the entire area, visit the temples, go to the observation decks on the edge of the mountain, and simply soak up the atmosphere. Just remember: photography is prohibited inside the temples. 7. Descending It's the same process, only in reverse: cable car, hike down, and bus. Results: Visiting Mount Emei was one of the most memorable experiences of my entire trip to China. Setting off at dawn from the mountain foot, the green hills layer upon layer, mist rising gently. The winding mountain path climbs upward, disappearing into the distance. Stone steps pile upon each other, ascending with the mountain’s incline, like the long path of cultivation for all beings in the world. Along the way, ancient trees tower, gnarled branches shading the sun. The mountain breeze passes through the forest, pine waves rustling, blending with the faint sounds of Buddhist chants and bell tolls, washing away the clamor of worldly life. At the start, steps are light and eyes feast on the beautiful mountains and waters; halfway up, the slope steepens, legs ache, breath quickens, and the hardship of climbing becomes clear. This is like life’s ups and downs: youth is full of vigor and determination, pressing forward; but midway, one inevitably encounters fatigue and doubt, feeling slack and lost. Continuing upward, the clouds thicken, white mist surges through the mountains, enveloping the mid-slopes and wrapping the peaks, turning the world into a misty fairyland. At the summit, the mountains below hide in a sea of clouds, peaks like islands floating on waves. Layers of drifting clouds gather and swirl, rolling across all directions. At the peak of the cloud sea stands the majestic golden statue of Samantabhadra, the six-tusked golden elephant standing steady, the Bodhisattva seated on its back with a compassionate and solemn expression, gazing down upon the mortal world. Surrounded by mist and auspicious clouds, the golden elephant bathed in clouds, its golden body reflecting the fog—this is the truest depiction of the clouds embracing the golden elephant Buddha. Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is renowned for great deeds, complementing Manjushri Bodhisattva’s wisdom and practice, making boundless vows and undertaking countless difficult tasks. The six-tusked white elephant is his mount, symbolizing steadiness and resilience, walking firmly without haste, embodying Samantabhadra’s spirit of grounded and persistent great practice. Most beings have good intentions but lack perseverance, often wishing to do good but struggling to maintain the resolve to act. The sacred statue of Samantabhadra atop Emei’s golden summit stands amid the millennia-old sea of clouds, embraced year after year by drifting clouds, quietly observing the mortal world’s hustle and bustle, neither rejoicing in gain nor grieving loss, with immovable calm guarding this sacred place and protecting all beings. The mist represents worldly confusion and the distractions of the mind; countless floating clouds cannot obscure the golden Buddha’s light, nor disturb the Bodhisattva’s true heart. Even amid the vast cloud sea, the statue remains steady and compassionate. When the clouds part and the sun breaks through, countless golden rays pour down, bathing the golden summit and the mountains below. Only here does Buddha’s light appear in the mountains, a seven-colored halo hanging above the sea of clouds, light and shadow flowing, clear and gentle. Human figures are reflected within the halo, hearts merging with the light, dust and mist dissolving. This is the second half of the verse: light crossing the world of mortals. This beam of Buddha’s light is never a miraculous blessing but a faint glow illuminating the heart’s cultivation. People climb the mountain seeking peace, success, fulfillment, and freedom from troubles. Yet on the climb, no one can take a step for another, nor cross a steep slope for them. The Bodhisattva never erases human suffering out of thin air but shines a boundless light to reveal the restlessness of the heart and transform attachments. The mountain breeze clears the mind, the radiant light dispels gloom, telling every pilgrim: all salvation begins with self-rescue; all fulfillment depends on practice. Samantabhadra’s Ten Great Vows—honoring all Buddhas, praising the Tathagata, extensive offerings, repentance of karma—are all grounded in the word “practice.” Climbing the mountain is a physical journey; cultivating the mind is a practice of thought. We overcome rugged paths and bodily fatigue as we overcome life’s hardships, holding true to our hearts and forging ahead. The clouds embracing the golden elephant symbolize heaven and earth’s protection and compassion; Buddha’s light shining on all beings is the warmth of vows. Clouds represent worldly illusions and troubles; light is the innate clarity of the heart. The golden elephant stands for vows, Buddha’s light for salvation; with a peaceful mind, one finds the way home. Standing atop the golden summit, looking back on the long road traveled, one finally understands Emei’s Zen meaning: the mountain’s height does not matter; with Buddha, it is sacred; Buddha is not far; with heart, it is near. Clouds embrace the golden elephant Buddha, depicting the sacred mountain’s holy realm. While spending time in Chengdu, we decided to check out the famous Giant Buddha statue located in Leshan. We opted for the high-speed train and bought our tickets on Trip.com. A one-way ticket cost about 1,900 RUB (business class), and the ride from Chengdu to Leshan took around an hour. After arriving at the station, we hopped in a taxi to the entrance. The complex itself is situated on Mount Emei and consists of two parks: the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area and the Oriental Buddhist Theme Park. We kicked off our exploration with the latter. Even though the Oriental Park was built in the '90s, the entire place is steeped in history and an ancient vibe. Taking a stroll there is an absolute delight—there are hardly any crowds, and the tree canopy provides a nice, cooling shade. Both parks are connected by a network of winding paths. After wandering around the Oriental Park, we made our way to the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area through the West Gate of the Eastern Buddha Capital. Originally, we had planned to view the Buddha from the river, but we messed up our destination in Didi and ended up in the parks instead. Honestly, walking around this area beats a boat tour any day! It's only when you walk right up to the Buddha's feet and the upper viewing platform that you truly grasp the sheer scale of it. Knowing that its construction kicked off in 713 AD during the Tang Dynasty makes the whole experience even more awe-inspiring! While we did eventually end up taking a boat ride, I still highly recommend exploring the park on foot. Our day kicked off when we arrived in Leshan at 8:40 AM, and we caught our return train at 4:10 PM. I highly recommend checking out the Chinese restaurant down the street with the arch, right across from the train station! The food is fantastic, and the service is incredibly welcoming. The owner even ran to the store to buy cucumbers just to make us a garlic smashed cucumber salad! I've attached a photo of the restaurant.
