Italy Sicily 🔶Erice 🥠Pasticceria Maria Grammatico
#Overseas Travel
The owner of the Trapani B&B in Sicily said that if you go to Erice, you must try a kind of pastry "Genovesi di Erice", which is a traditional pastry only available in the mountain town of Erice!
You can find it at the famous local Pasticceria Maria Grammatico. This cookie is filled with milk cream and sprinkled with icing sugar, and is shaped like the classic Genoese sailor's hat.
The store also sells a variety of traditional cakes and pastries. There are also a small number of outdoor seats with sea views.

The handicrafts of Sicily all have a unique and exotic style. There are many specialty handicraft shops in the mountain town of Erice, especially the L’artigianato di Dorotea "Ceramica" ceramic craft shop, which is definitely worth a visit!
The ceramics outside the door are displayed very eye-catchingly! It is even more dazzling in the sun, making people unable to help but look at it a few more times. These ceramics from Sicily are colorful, and the patterns and colors of each piece are pleasing to the eye~

Suggestions and charm, traditions and stories from the past, beauty and wonder. You can feel all this while walking through the streets of Erice, a village among the most beautiful in Italy. Its history is enhanced by the poet Virgil, who cites Erice in his most famous work, the Aeneid, making it a stop in the Trojan hero Aeneas’s journey; the hero is also the mythical founder of Rome.
To discover Erice, let’s begin our tour from Porta Trapani and walk through the alley streets and the squares, bordered by churches and palaces that, in open spaces, reveal majestic landscapes. Erice is famous for its numerous churches, indeed it was known as the city with a hundred churches. However, in reality there are less but many must be visited. Besides the Church of San Martino, in Norman style, and the Church of Sant’Albertino degli Abbati, we will highlight the oldest, the Mother Church, dedicated to the cult of Santa Maria Assunta. Its quadrangular bell tower is embellished with mullioned windows; it is a structure with the function of defending and sighting. There are nine crosses in the right wall of the church: legend has it that those crosses came from the temple of Venus, carried by Frederick of Aragon, who was a runaway and refugee in the city during the War of the Vespers.

Erice Fabric Art🎨
#winterescape Step into Timeless Charm at Chiesa Matrice in Erice ⛪️🕰️
This enchanting cathedral blends medieval mystery with Sicilian flair, offering history buffs and architecture lovers a serene, photogenic escape. Whether cloudy or sunny, Erice’s Duomo reveals a striking silhouette amid windswept cobbled streets.
For your visit, start from Erice’s main gate and stroll up to piazza Matrice. You’ll spot the Chiesa Matrice’s imposing facade—perfect for a dramatic, insta-worthy exterior shot. Inside, marvel at intricate stonework and the tranquil ambiance. Don’t miss the rose window and soaring nave, best captured with natural light streaming in (afternoons ideal on sunnier days). Seek out cozy corners for close-ups, like carvings or patterned floors; your fabric-with-fish photo inspiration blends beautifully with Erice’s textured tapestries and relics.
On rainy or cloudy days, the Duomo’s atmospheric light makes for moody, artistic photos. If you catch a sunny break, walk nearby for sweeping views of Erice; the square outside provides modern-meets-medieval contrasts, ideal for wide-angle shots of both Western-style and contemporary architecture in your frame.
Tips: Visit early to avoid crowds and catch peaceful moments. The church opens most days from mid-morning—confirm hours locally as they vary with seasons and religious events. Modest attire is required; bring a scarf just in case. Avoid weekends if you want quiet, as local ceremonies can fill the space.
Precautions: The stone steps can be slippery on wet days, so wear sturdy shoes. Photography inside may be restricted during services.

Erice: The Timeless Walled City Above the Clouds
High above Trapani, the medieval town of Erice sits encircled by ancient stone walls, with cobbled lanes, castles, and sweeping views that stretch from the sea to the mountains 🏰🌄. It feels like stepping back in time, with winding alleys leading to charming courtyards, pastry shops, and historic churches.
The best way to reach Erice is by cable car 🚡 from Trapani. The Funivia Trapani–Erice runs daily (weather permitting), usually from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm, and later in summer. A round-trip ticket costs about €9 per adult (or €6 one-way). The 10-minute journey glides over vineyards and salt pans, ending with a spectacular approach to the mountaintop town. If you are driving, parking can be difficult and quite pricey in the city itself, but there is a free grass car park five minutes walk east of the Porta Trapani, just off Strada Provinciale 3!
Inside the walls, wander to Castello di Venere for breathtaking views, and be sure to try the town’s famous almond pastries 🍪 — a sweet tradition going back centuries.
Erice is a magical blend of history, views, and flavours — well worth the ride up. ✨

Erice is a charming medieval village perched on its namesake mountain, 751 meters above sea level, offering spectacular views of the western coast, the Egadi Islands, and Trapani. The Castle of Venus, built by the Normans on an ancient temple, provides breathtaking vistas and fascinating archaeological remains. The intertwining stone alleys, dotted with Gothic churches like the Chiesa Madre, create a timeless atmosphere. Village on the Mountain, Castle in the Sky
Perched at an altitude of 750 meters, there is a village built on the mountain peak called Erice.
💙 Known as the Castle in the Sky of Sicily, this village can be reached by car, but taking the cable car is a faster option. The cable car's operating hours may vary daily, so it's best to check in advance.
♥️ As you ride the cable car up, you can't help but marvel at how a village could be built in such a high place—it’s truly fascinating.
💛 Due to its elevated location, you can enjoy views of the Trapani salt flats and the cityscape of Trapani.
💕 I stayed in the city of Trapani and visited this place for half a day. If you're staying in Trapani or Palermo, I highly recommend taking some time to visit this enchanting village. 😉

Beautiful view from Mount Erice!
While in Trapani, we decided to visit Mount Erice, which is in proximity to the city. We took the cable car to get to the top and while seated comfortably in the little cabin, we enjoyed some breath-taking moments adminiring the views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea from an altitude of 500 m above sea level. Once on top, we visit the small town of Erice, where we stopped for one of the most amazing pizzas I have ever tasted! An overall awesome day!#familytrip #localguides

Erice of Sicily
The city of stone seemed to have hibernated to escape the winter cold, and there was no sign of people. If I were to describe Erice’s winter, I would say that high is not enough, and silence would be more appropriate. There were only about ten or so travelers like us who visited the quiet city of Erice, and the shiny stone floor absorbed even the sound of people’s footsteps, and the murmur of their voices was trapped between the solid walls, so the only human sound was the coughing of two or three people we happened to encounter while walking down the alley. It seemed like everyone in Erice in winter was practicing their Tao in the solid stone.

Sicily: The medieval mountain town of Erice
#High-altitude viewing #Overseas travel
Sicily, Italy: The commanding medieval hill town of Erice, located in the Trapani province of Sicily, is one of the most beautiful hill towns in Sicily. Here you can enjoy the most beautiful scenery! Especially in clear weather, you can have a clear view of the green countryside and the blue sea.
🔶How to get to the cable car station and take the cable car to Erice🔶
From Trapani city centre, take bus number 21 or 23 (weekdays), 202 (holidays) or 203 (Friday to Sunday after 2pm in July and every day in August) to the base of the cable car "Funivia Trapani-Erice". Then take the cable car up to the mountain town of Erice.
🔶Walk along the path on the edge of the mountain city to Venus Castle🔶
After getting off the cable car, follow the path to the Giardino del Balio viewing gardens. Here you can admire the Castello di Venere (Venus Castle) and the Torri Pepoli (Pepoli Towers), towers built on the cliff, which make the view very unique. This is Erice's classic shooting position.
Here you can experience a slow travel pace.
