Portchester Castle Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Portchester Castle , 🏴
Portchester Castle’s remarkable history begins in the 3rd century when the Romans built a fort here to combat attacks by barbarian pirates. In the 5th century it was transformed into a Saxon stronghold, or burgh, to protect this part of the coast from Viking raids.
After the Norman Conquest in 1066, a castle was built inside of the Roman walls. It later became a royal residence. Occupied until the 17th century, it was converted into a prison during the Napoleonic Wars. #castle 🏰 #unitedkingdom
Titchfield Abbey Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Titchfield Abbey , 🏴
First built in the 13th century, Titchfield Abbey in Hampshire was the home of a community of Premonstratensian canons. The canons lived communally, like monks, but also preached and served as priests in the local community. After the Suppression of the Monasteries, Henry VIII gave the abbey to Sir Thomas Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, who transformed the buildings into a grand Tudor mansion called Place House. The most impressive feature of the abbey today is a grand turreted gatehouse, which was built across the nave of the church. #castle 🏰 #abbey #unitedkingdom
