The magical thing about Feng County is that, although it is deep in the Qinling Mountains at the source of the Jialing River, the county town’s nightlife is as lively as a small Chongqing. The Jialing River flows right through the middle of the town, with lights from both banks reflecting on the water. People come and go on the bridge, and the smoke from barbecue stalls fills the streets. You can find a chair by the river, sit down, with the shadow of the Qinling Mountains on your left and the bustling human world on your right. This contrast is quite captivating. This trip to Feng County was mainly to find a place to relax for a few days and to visit some nearby spots. Let me share my itinerary with you. 📍 Morning at the Source of the Jialing River The Jialing River Source National Forest Park is south of Feng County, about a 40-minute drive from the town. The water flow in June is just right—not too much but very steady. The source is actually a mountain spring, seeping out from moss-covered rock crevices, forming a small stream. If you squat nearby and listen to the water dripping, it’s hard to believe such a tiny flow will eventually become a great river crossing four provinces. Walking downstream along the stream, there is a rocky beach with a big drop. The water jumps between the stones, splashing cool droplets on your face. The ferns by the stream grow wildly, their leaves covered in water beads that sparkle in the sunlight. I brewed a cup of hand-poured coffee by the stream, using water scooped directly from the stream and boiled. Maybe it’s psychological, but it tasted better than using bottled water. 📍 Experience the Qinling Mountains’ North-South Divide Feng County sits right on China’s geographical dividing line between north and south. This concept sounds abstract, but you can really feel it when you’re there. Heading south over the Qinling Mountains from Feng County leads to Hanzhong, where the climate suddenly becomes humid and the vegetation changes from deciduous to evergreen forests. Going north leads to the Guanzhong Plain, which is dry and open. Standing on the watershed ridge, the southern wind carries moisture, while the northern wind smells earthy. It’s quite fascinating for one county to have both northern and southern characteristics. There is a trail near the watershed that takes about two hours to walk around, with moderate difficulty. Along the way, you can see the typical vertical vegetation zones of the Qinling Mountains, from broadleaf forests at the foot to coniferous forests at the top, clearly layered. 📍 Qiang Village and Stone Qiang City Feng County has a Qiang ethnic community, with the Stone Qiang Village located a few kilometers south of the town. The village is built on a hillside, with stone houses stacked layer upon layer, looking like they grew out of the mountain. At the end of June, during some small Qiang festivals, they roast whole lambs in the village. The aroma drifts far; I smelled it halfway up the mountain. I bought a portion to try—the skin was roasted crispy and charred, while the meat inside remained juicy. Dipped in local spicy sauce, every bite was pure happiness. You can also visit the handmade silver jewelry workshops in the Qiang village. The master craftsmen hammer silver bracelets in a traditional way, one strike at a time, with classic patterns. These are not mass-produced wholesale items from Yiwu. 📍 Moon Bay and Strolling in the Town Moon Bay Park behind Feng County town is a nice place for an evening walk. There is a boardwalk circling the mountainside, offering a panoramic view of the town and the Jialing River. When the sunset dyes the river orange-red, the bridge lights up, and the buildings opposite light up as well. For a small county, they really put effort into the night view. Back by the river, find a small restaurant to try Feng County’s specialty “Gan Jiao Bang” (dry-foot pork). It’s pork leg cured in the lunar month and stewed with potatoes until tender enough to fall apart with chopsticks. Paired with local corn wine, two cups will warm you up completely. 📍 Travel Tips Driving yourself, take the Yinkun Expressway and exit at Feng County. It’s about three and a half hours from Xi’an. The town is small and parking is convenient. There is no public transport between Zibai Mountain and Tongtian River; driving or hiring a car is the only option. Renting a car for a day costs about 400-500 RMB, and the hotel front desk can help arrange it. In June, you don’t need heavy clothes in Feng County; short sleeves with a light jacket during the day are enough. But if you go to Zibai Mountain, it’s recommended to bring a windbreaker because it’s windy at the summit.
