These 8️⃣ places are perfect for a 3-day stay 01 Dandong | Liaoning Travel to Dandong for National Day, but don’t treat it as a one-day border checklist. Stay for three days and hit the right pace. ⏰ Go to the Yalu River Broken Bridge at 7 AM when there are fewer people, the river mist lingers, and the bridge’s steel frame photographs with a cool tone. Broken Bridge ticket CNY 30. Walking onto the bridge and back takes about 20 minutes. 📍 Head north along the river to the Pearl Park area; it’s quieter than the Broken Bridge main entrance and great for zoning out. I recommend saving a whole day for Phoenix Mountain. Don’t wear new shoes — the Laoniu Bei section requires scrambling; if your knees are bad, take the cable car. ⚠️ After 3 PM the downhill cable car can have lines up to an hour, so aim to leave before 2 PM. Kuandian Estuary and Lǜjiang Village are good to combine by car on day 2. Lǜjiang Village is most beautiful at dawn when the river fogs; rapeseed blooms are in May–June, while National Day shows a different autumn color. Stay at a family-run farmhouse for about CNY 150 a night and try the river fish potstickers. 🚄 It’s a 1-hour bus from Dandong station to Kuandian; a round-trip private car is around CNY 300. Three days is unhurried and just right. 02 Tianjin Stay three days in Tianjin, and don’t just visit the Five Avenues. That area gets so crowded it’s exhausting. 📍 Arrive at the Italian Style Area before 9 AM; Marco Polo Square is empty then, perfect for photos. After 10 AM tour groups flood in — leave quickly. Liang Qichao iced drink parlor next door is worth a visit; it’s quiet and the courtyard is peaceful. I recommend renting a shared bike to ride around the Five Avenues rather than taking a horse carriage. A carriage loop takes about 40 minutes, the narration is hard to hear, and it’s expensive. ⚠️ There’s parking underground at Minyuan Square, but it’s basically full during National Day. Take the metro to Xiaobailou and walk. The Olympic Sports Center stadium is nice at dusk; more locals stroll there than tourists, and the vibe is relaxed. The square is free; to enter the church interior you need a reservation, but you can scan on-site. 📍 Opposite the cathedral is a street with Lao Chang spring pancake that wraps shredded potato and smoked meat — CNY 60 for two people and you’ll be full. Volga Manor is in the suburbs and fits well for day 2. Russian wooden houses framed by autumn colors are much less crowded than the city. 🚄 A taxi from downtown takes about CNY 50; buses reach it too but are slower. Buy tickets online in advance to save about CNY 20. Harbin’s “ice and snow” is currently just an idea — don’t be fooled by the name. Walk Central Street at night; the long line at the Madieer ice pop window doesn’t guarantee it’s the best — try the small nearby stalls too. ⚠️ October in Harbin has big temperature swings morning and night. Bring a light down jacket. Good for first-time visitors to the northeast who want Russian-style architecture and don’t mind walking. Three days is relaxed. 04 Hulunbuir | Inner Mongolia Hulunbuir grassland is in its last green-to-gold phase during National Day. Go later and it’ll be just dry grass. ⏰ Leave Hailar at 6:30 AM by self-drive or private car and follow the Morigele River. Morning mist hangs over the river bends and the cattle and sheep are just leaving their pens — that scene is worth the trip. 📍 Drive 10 km into the Jinzhanghan tribe area and you’ll find a free high slope with better views than the official lookout. Don’t expect restaurants everywhere on the grassland. Bring snacks and water. For lunch find a yurt and try hand-held mutton — about CNY 80 per person. ⚠️ Nights on the grassland approach freezing during National Day; if you stay in a yurt, ask if there’s an electric blanket. A private car costs about CNY 500 a day with driver-guide. Spend three days on the Hailar–Erguna–Heishantou route at an unhurried pace. Rent horses from reputable ranches; don’t follow roadside touts. Good for self-drivers, photographers, and people who want to zone out. Signal is spotty, which is great for disconnecting. 05 Yancheng | Jiangsu The Dafeng Milu Deer Reserve in Yancheng is perfect for National Day. Have lunch outside the protected area — options are limited, so consider bringing food. Good for kids who want to learn about animals, and for wetland lovers. In three days you can add the Yellow Sea Forest Park for some fresh air. 06 Nanning | Guangxi Nanning is one of those cities that doesn’t dazzle at first sight but makes you reluctant to leave after three days. It’s surprisingly green. 📍 Qingshuo Mountain tourist area has locals exercising by 7 AM. Enter from the north gate, take the sightseeing bus to Guanyin Chan Temple, and then walk down slowly. ⏰ Arrive at Longxiang Tower at 5:30 PM to watch the sunset and take in both the Yongjiang River and the city skyline. Fubo Temple is small and by the Yongjiang; it takes about 10 minutes to see. While you’re there, take a boat from Minsheng Wharf for a 40-minute night tour of the Yongjiang — tickets CNY 80. 🍜 Zhongshan Road night market opens at 6 PM. Try rolled rice noodles and sour snacks; for laoyoufen go to Shuji, not the night market. ⚠️ There are many electric bikes in Nanning — watch the lights when crossing. It’s hot and humid during National Day; bring an umbrella. Good for people who want a slower life and to eat noodles and fruit. Three days is just right to slow your pace. 07 Kashgar | Xinjiang Kashgar old city is great during National Day — comfortable weather, not too hot or cold, and fruit season. 📍 The old city’s opening ceremony is at 10 AM — watch for five minutes and then weave into the alleys, avoid the main street. The hand-hammered copper shop on Wusitang Boyi Road is a must; the sound of the old craftsmen working is better than any background music. Save a full day for the Pamir Plateau. Apply for a border pass at the Kashgar All-region Tourist Service Center with your ID — it’s free. ⏰ The drive past Baisha Lake and Muztagh Ata is best in the afternoon light. The Stone City in Taxkorgan is golden at sunset — worth an overnight stay. ⚠️ Don’t ignore altitude sickness — Taxkorgan is over 3,000 m. Avoid running or jumping when you arrive. 🍜 In the old city try gangzi meat and baked baozi from stalls with a local line. Good for hardy travelers who love culture and want to see snow-capped peaks. Three days is tight; four days is more comfortable. 08 Ningde | Fujian Ningde is an underrated coastal small city. Taimushan, Baishuijiang, and Xiapu can be linked in three days. 📍 Enter Taimu Mountain at 8 AM and explore the One-Line-Sky and Gourd Cave; if you’re a bit stocky the gaps can be tight. ⏰ In the afternoon head to Baishuijiang · Yuanyang Creek — water-wading activities are still available during National Day; bring non-slip shoes. ⚠️ The stones in Baishuijiang are slippery and many people have fallen. Save Xiapu’s tidal flats for day 3. For the sunrise at Beiqi tidal flats you need to get in position by 4:30 AM; arrive late and all the tripods are gone. 🍜 Xiapu seafood stalls serve razor clams and yellow croaker — about CNY 100 per person. 🚄 It’s a 30-minute high-speed train from Ningde station to Xiapu. Good for photographers, families who want to play in the water, and seafood lovers. Three days is unhurried and the sea breeze is plenty. Of these eight places, I most want to return to Kashgar and Xiapu — one to the west, one to the east — both are places that only reveal their flavor after a three-day stay. Pick one and go.

The village still preserves old wooden winnowing machines, relics of the farming life of the older generation. Standing quietly on the threshing floor, it's as if you can still see the busy scenes of farmers winnowing and sifting grain from days gone by.
