8 lesser-known cool spots to escape the heat with kids during summer vacation
When traveling with kids in summer, the biggest worry isn’t crowds but the heat making everyone feel dizzy. I checked the map and found 8 places that are truly cool in July. No need to fight for a spot by the sea or squeeze into crowds. From over 2,000 meters high in Tibet to valleys in southern China, transportation ranges from a half-hour high-speed train ride to a few hours by plane, and each place has a unique vibe—some perfect for wild water play, others for zoning out in ancient temples, and some where kids can learn while having fun. The key is, most people don’t even think of these 8 places for summer trips.
01 Nyingchi | Tibet
Nyingchi in July is known as “China’s little Switzerland.” While other places hit the mid-30s, daytime highs here only reach 25 or 26 degrees Celsius, and you’ll need a jacket when it rains.
⏰ At 6:30 AM, set off from Bomi. The pine forests along National Highway 318 are covered in dew, and the air is damp and cool like early autumn in the south. I parked near Tongmai Bridge and sat with my child by the roadside watching steam rise from the Palongzangbu River—you can see clouds rising from the ground with the naked eye.
📍 Basongcuo Lake is a must-visit. Take the park shuttle to the island in the lake. The boardwalk stretches over the emerald water. Kids can lie down and watch the fish for half an hour or more.
⚠️ Don’t go straight to the mountaintop viewing platform—you’ll miss the part of the lakeshore that looks most like turquoise. Have stone pot chicken for lunch in Cuogao Village; the soup is full of mushroom flavor.
In the evening, drive into the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the peak of Namjagbarwa. Kids call it “ice cream mountain” because the snow on top glows creamy in the sunset.
02 Jinan | Shandong
Jinan is hot in summer, but it has springs, which is a big plus. I split the itinerary into “morning by the water, afternoon in the mountains.”
Arrive before 8 AM at the “First Spring Under Heaven” scenic area. There’s already a crowd around Baotu Spring. No need to squeeze in—walk north to Wulongtan, where there are fewer springs but a shallow area by the water where kids can roll up their pants and splash.⍰ The water is so cold it makes your toes curl, and kids don’t want to leave.
🍜 For lunch, head deep into Furong Street to find a place serving braised pork rice. It’s rich but not greasy, paired with a bowl of sweet soup. After eating, it’s just right to drive to Qianfoshan.
⚠️ Don’t climb at noon. Enter from the north gate and take the mountain path shaded by dense trees. When you reach Xingguo Zen Temple, the mountain breeze dries your sweat completely. Descend around 3 or 4 PM and take the cable car down. Kids get more excited than on a roller coaster.
03 Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Guizhou
Libo Zhangjiang is one of the coolest places in Guizhou in summer. The water is blue-green, like a spilled bottle of mint soda.
📍 Go straight to the Xiaoqikong ancient bridge. Enter from the east gate and walk upstream. Don’t worry— the less crowded path is the easiest. Kids can splash in the water. There’s a section called “water forest” where water flows through cracks in the rocks. Take off your shoes and step in—the water tickles your feet.
⚠️ Be sure to bring quick-dry or creek shoes. Regular holes shoes get slippery when wet. At noon, take the park shuttle to Daqikong. There’s no direct sun on the walking paths, only canyon shade. After 10 minutes, your face feels cool.
🍜 Have beef rice noodles for dinner in Libo County. The soup has pickled radish and mint leaves, so refreshing you’ll want another bowl.
04 Zhuzhou | Hunan
Zhuzhou’s summer coolness is different—it’s the kind you find in the mountains. When visiting the Yan Emperor Mausoleum, don’t just think of it as a memorial site; the surrounding forests are the real treasure.
⏰ Arrive before 10 AM and visit Shennong Garden first. It has over 100 kinds of Chinese herbs, with a sign at the entrance explaining each herb’s benefits. My child pointed at mint and asked, “Does it really repel mosquitoes?” I picked a leaf, crushed it, and rubbed it on his hand. The sharp, refreshing scent convinced him.
📍 For lunch, go to a farmhouse restaurant in Luyuan Town. Dishes like smoked pork with bracken and braised native chicken taste way better than city takeout.
⚠️ Don’t rush off. North of the mausoleum is Xiangshan Mountain, where mountain streams babble in summer. Bring a net to catch small fish and shrimp. Remember to dress your child in long pants—mosquitoes in the grass are smarter than you think.
05 Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan
This route will leave your whole family speechless—not because it’s boring, but because it’s breathtaking.
📍 First stop is Bingzhongluo. After crossing Biluo Snow Mountain, the window view is the Nujiang Grand Canyon. The river is a muddy flood in July, but the villages on the mountainside are quiet. Stay at a guesthouse in Wuli Village. Open the window and see terraced fields hanging on cliffs. It’s the first time my child realized people live above the clouds.
The next day, head to Nanjilu.
⚠️ You need to book hiking in advance, and July is rainy season, so trails are slippery. If you have young kids, just do the first lake section—it looks like ink mixed with milk, a gray-blue color you won’t forget.
🍜 Dinner in Bingzhongluo town is lacquer oil chicken. The chicken has a strange aroma. My child said, “It tastes like eating wood, but I can’t stop.”
06 Huangshi | Hubei
I define Huangshi’s summer as a half-hour high-speed train ride away to find a park to escape the sun.
📍 Chengyue Island sits in the middle of Cihu Lake, shaped like a moon and connected to shore by a bridge. At 5:30 PM in July, the lake glows warm orange, and the breeze from the center carries a watery scent but is cool enough to make you not want to leave.
⏰ In the morning, hike to the top of Tuanchengshan Park for a panoramic view of Cihu Lake. The camphor trees along the path shade the entire way, blocking all sunlight.
⚠️ Don’t drive into the park. The fastest way up is the stairs from the east gate—15 minutes to the top, and kids can climb the whole way themselves.
🍜 For lunch, try potato chip sandwiches near the department store. It’s a Huangshi specialty—crispy potato chips inside a baked flatbread with a layer of chili sauce. Kids can have a mild spicy version. Two sandwiches are never enough.
07 Weinan | Shaanxi
Huashan is actually best in summer because the mountaintop is cool like another world.
I chose to go up the west peak and down the north peak. Take the cable car to the west peak. The wind is strong enough to blow off hats. My child huddled in his windbreaker and said, “Mom, I’m cold.”⍰ The temperature on the mountain is only in the teens Celsius. A light down jacket isn’t an exaggeration. During peak season, book tickets on the official WeChat account in advance or you won’t even get a cable car ticket.
📍 The north peak is the best section for kids. The path is relatively flat, with a narrow ridge called “Canglong Ridge” that kids love.
⚠️ Don’t take the “sky plank road.” It’s not for kids—just look at it and move on.
🍜 After descending, have a bowl of water basin lamb in Weinan city. The soup is best with crescent-shaped flatbread. Tear the bread into pieces and soak it in the soup, then pick up lamb and chili with chopsticks. Kids can finish more than half a bowl.
08 Quanzhou | Fujian
Quanzhou is hot in summer, but it’s a city where you can “go out early and return late”—head out in the morning and evening, and hide in ancient temples or mountains at noon.
⏰ At 6:30 AM, go to Qingyuan Mountain and stop at Laojun Rock. The giant carved statue of Laojun has closed eyes, surrounded by century-old banyan trees that shade the area like a green carpet. My child lay on the ground watching ants move their home for half an hour.
⚠️ Don’t climb further. The steps ahead are steep, and the afternoon sun will drain your energy.
📍 After descending, visit the Quanzhou cliff inscriptions. The characters hidden in the cliff face, like “prayer for wind inscription” and “Jiuri Mountain,” are pointed out by my child. The sound of wind through bamboo groves drowns out the temple bells.
At noon, hide inside Kaiyuan Temple. Sitting in the shadow of the east and west towers, my child couldn’t understand the painted flying musicians in the main hall but spent the whole afternoon chasing pigeons.
🍜 In the evening, visit Chongwu Ancient City to see the sea. It’s not about sunbathing on the beach but walking along the ancient city walls and watching Hui’an women dry fishing nets by the shore.
⚠️ Don’t buy conch shells in the ancient city—they’re all glued by hand. Walk outside the west gate to the food stalls and order Chongwu fish rolls and oyster omelets. They’re only 15 yuan each, and kids get their hands messy eating them.
Don’t try to visit all 8 at once. Pick 3—like Nyingchi with Libo, or Zhuzhou plus Quanzhou. Which one do you want to visit most? Share in the comments, and I’ll help you plan the route.
