Altay|June’s Grasslands and Lakes Are Legendary! This Is the True Fairyland on Earth
If anyone says Xinjiang isn’t beautiful in June, I’ll argue with them! Just got back from Altay and was truly moved to tears by the beauty… Wildflowers everywhere, emerald-colored lakes, grasslands at the foot of snow-capped mountains, a cool 22°C summer, and you even need a down jacket at night! This guide shares all the pitfalls I encountered, highly recommend saving it🌟
✨ Legendary Altay Spots in June
Jikepulin Grassland — Don’t just think of skiing in winter! Summer at Jikepulin is the hidden gem, completely uncommercialized and ridiculously uncrowded
· Drive straight to the viewing platform, no hiking or climbing needed, perfect for the lazy! The moment you stand on the platform, you’re speechless — alpine meadows stretch all the way to the snow mountains, with golden lilies, wild peonies, and little yellow flowers blooming wildly, cows and sheep grazing leisurely, and the sight of waves of grass swaying in the wind is healing beyond words
· June exclusive: wild strawberries on the grassland are ripe! Tiny and red, sweet and sour, picking and eating them for half an hour while squatting on the ground is pure joy
· Photo tip: wear a white long dress standing in the sea of flowers with snow mountains in the background, every shot looks like a Swiss masterpiece
Kanas Three Bays Morning Mist — June at Kanas is truly the divine backyard! The lake is as blue as a gem, and the morning mist makes it look like a fairyland
· Best time: 6:15 AM! Don’t sleep in! This is when the morning mist is thickest, the mist at Fairy Bay floats like ribbons on the lake surface, sunlight filters through the trees, and the Tyndall effect is breathtaking
· Secret spot: don’t crowd the center of the viewing platform! Walk to the third platform on the right, fewer people and you can capture the entire river bend without needing to Photoshop out people
· Personal experience: June daytime temperature at Kanas is 20°C, but only 5°C in the early morning and evening, definitely bring a down jacket! I was shivering while shooting the morning mist
Keketuohai Irtysh River — Don’t just look at the big rock! The real essence is deeper along the river valley
· The shallow riverbed water is crystal clear and ice-cold, stepping in instantly cools you down, perfect for summer water fun; towering pine forests provide full shade, so you won’t get sunburned walking inside
· Hidden gem: the birch forest next to Mine No. 3, with fresh green leaves in June, sunlight filtering through the leaves creates stunning light and shadow effects
· Tip: Keketuohai is very windy, remember to wear a hat or your hair will be blown crazy
💡 Summer Exclusive Deep Experience
Tuoletait Summer Pasture — Follow the herders on their seasonal move! This is the real Altay
· In June, herders drive their cattle and sheep to the summer pasture, you can stay in their yurts, experience milking horses, making milk tea, herding cattle and sheep, and gather around the campfire at night listening to their songs
· No tourists here, just grasslands, snow mountains, and starry skies; after 10 PM the Milky Way is clearly visible, lying on the grass watching stars is an indescribable shock
· Note: be sure to find a legitimate herder’s home, don’t enter yurts casually, and contact a local guide in advance
Baisha Lake — An emerald in the desert! The secret border spot of the 185th Regiment
· Suddenly a pool of bright blue water appears in the middle of the desert, surrounded by birch forests and reed marshes; in June the reeds are just sprouting, lush green against the blue lake, a striking contrast and very beautiful
· Border experience: from the viewing platform you can see the mountains of Kazakhstan, the border marker is right next to it, standing at the edge of the motherland fills you with pride
· Must eat: watermelons from the 185th Regiment! Grown in sandy soil, super sweet, a big one costs 5 yuan, perfect for cooling down
⚠️ Pitfall Guide (Lessons Learned the Hard Way!)
❌ Don’t join low-price tours! “Altay 7 days 5 nights for 999” is a trap, more shopping stops than sightseeing, better to rent a car and travel freely
❌ Don’t eat inside scenic areas! A bowl of noodles in Kanas costs 58 yuan, a plate of big chicken 288 yuan, buy snacks and water in Burqin beforehand
❌ Don’t hike in sandals! There are thorns and cow dung on the grassland, non-slip sports shoes are safest
❌ Don’t pick wildflowers casually! Some are protected plants, others are poisonous, just admire them without touching
❌ Don’t drink untreated water! Grassland water looks clean but has parasites, always drink boiled or bottled water
🍃 Practical Tips
✈️ Transportation: fly to Altay Airport, car rental costs 500-800 yuan per day, find a local experienced driver who knows the roads and can take you to off-the-beaten-path spots
🧥 Clothing: short sleeves + long sleeves + thin down jacket + windbreaker, 20-degree temperature difference between morning/evening and daytime in June
🦟 Must-have: mosquito repellent! Grassland mosquitoes are big and poisonous, I got over ten bites, bring strong repellent
📸 Photography: wear white, red, or yellow dresses, they match perfectly with grasslands, snow mountains, and blue skies
⏰ Best time: June 5 - June 25, wildflowers bloom and tourists are few, July is already peak season
Altay in June is truly worth it, with snow mountains, grasslands, lakes, and flower seas — all the beauty you can imagine is here. Come quickly while it’s uncrowded, or July will be packed~
