#summervacay I've been to Italy dozens of times, and this was actually my first visit to the famous Genoa! It was once a mighty maritime republic, centuries ago standing alongside Venice, Pisa, and Naples as one of Italy's four great maritime powers. At one point, it even controlled all territories west of Italy... Christopher Columbus was born here and embarked on his voyage to the New World, and it's also where Italian football first began! So, what are the best things to do in Genoa? Cattedrale Di San Lorenzo (Genoa Cathedral): The inside of the church is absolutely beautiful! Old Port Of Genova (Genoa Old Port): A great area for a stroll and soaking in the atmosphere. Palazzo Rosso & Palazzo Bianco (Red Palace & White Palace): These are must-visit attractions! They boast luxurious decorations and exquisite frescoes. Belvedere Castelletto (Castelletto Lookout): You can take an elevator up to this viewpoint for panoramic city views. Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace of Genoa): Now a museum. It was closed on Monday, so I didn't get to go in. Genova Aquarium (Genoa Aquarium): Europe's second-largest aquarium. Cruising along the Mediterranean coast in Europe is a common way to travel. Typically, the cruise stops at multiple countries along the Mediterranean, with passengers boarding and disembarking daily. The Mediterranean is relatively calm, making it a safe choice for first-time cruisers. 💰 Costs 💰 This time, I booked an 8-day, 7-night trip in an interior cabin for $1,156 USD, which includes a $75 credit. Cruise prices fluctuate, so keep an eye out for deals. Of course, it also depends on your schedule flexibility. Once onboard, head to the kiosk on the fifth floor to link your credit card 💳. There’s an additional daily charge of $12 for gratuities, which will appear during the trip (don’t be alarmed 😂—it’s standard). 🌟 Recommendations 🌟 We paid a little extra for a specialty restaurant and a paid performance (which includes a drink). It was absolutely worth it! MSC’s Japanese teppanyaki chefs put on a show, and it’s one of the few Asian flavors available onboard. Genoa is MSC’s home port, so the signage and directions are straightforward—just follow the signs or the crowd. ⚠️ Luggage may not arrive immediately, so bring a bag with swimwear or items you’ll need before departure. ⚠️ If your luggage hasn’t arrived, don’t worry—there’s a small room near the credit card kiosk on the fifth floor where unclaimed luggage is stored. Day2️⃣ Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy About 1.5 hours by car from Rome. You’ll need to take a paid shuttle bus to the train station. Day3️⃣ Palermo (Monreale), Italy Sicily (check my homepage for other food recommendations). You can walk to the city center, and most attractions are within a 10-20 minute walking distance if you’re up for it. Day4️⃣ At sea There’s so much to do onboard that you won’t feel bored at all. Day5️⃣ Ibiza (Balearic Islands), Spain The famous party island with breathtaking scenery. It’s about a 30-minute walk to the city center (guess how I know 😂). Taking a public ferry offers a better experience, though some reviews complain about its timing. Day6️⃣ Valencia, Spain The port is quite large, so it’s highly recommended to queue early to disembark. A bus to the city center costs €13 and stops at the entrance to the old town. Day7️⃣ Marseille (Provence), France MSC offers a shuttle bus to the city center for €16, but you’ll have to wait outdoors in the sun. The shore excursion time here is the shortest of the entire trip. Fortunately, taking an Uber round-trip costs about €40, which is reasonable if you’re traveling with someone. Day8️⃣ Genoa (Portofino), Italy ⚠️ Before 10:00 PM the day before disembarkation, attach the luggage tags provided by housekeeping and leave your luggage outside your cabin door. ⚠️ On the morning of disembarkation, cabins must be vacated by 8:00 AM, but you can still enjoy activities and meals onboard.

The house is small but has historical significance. It’s incredible to imagine young Columbus growing up here, perhaps dreaming of the vast oceans he would later cross. Offering a glimpse into the early life of one of history's most iconic explorers. While the building itself has been rebuilt on the original site, the exhibits inside are unpretentious but informative, including maps, documents, and artifacts that provide context for Columbus’ life and his times. Genoa is worth a visit for anyone with a rich historical heritage.

The majestic fountain in the center is the perfect spot for photos, surrounded by beautiful palaces. From here, we wandered down Via Garibaldi, a UNESCO World Heritage street lined with Renaissance palaces. It is also an important industrial center, forming the industrial triangle of Italy with Milan and Turin. Long before the founding of ancient Rome, Ligurians had lived here. It was once an administrative region of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it fell under Byzantine rule and was later occupied by the Lombards and Franks. From the 12th to the 16th century, it gradually prospered thanks to the Crusades and established an independent and powerful maritime republic. Although there are subways and buses, it is still more interesting to travel and adventure on foot, walking up the mountains, down the water and along the coast. From the Sunday flea market in Piazza Ferrari to the Red Palace, from the church to the fountain, I followed the example of the great adventurer Christopher Columbus, whose hometown was Genoa.

The Cattedrale di San Lorenzo is a Roman Catholic church in Genoa, Italy, the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Genoa. The striped buildings are the easiest to recognize and are visited by many tourists. Excavations in the area beneath and in front of the church have revealed Roman-era walls and pavements, as well as pre-Christian sarcophagi. So it is speculated that it was built in the 5th or 6th century. The carvings on the pillars and beams are very delicate, and the stone lions at the door resemble those of HSBC Bank. After several reconstructions and revisions, the facade was completed between 1307 and 1312, and the interior colonnade has been rebuilt to this day. The Romanesque building was kept in its original state, with the addition of murals with religious themes. Construction of the cathedral was completed in the 17th century. If you know Italian, you can read the name of the old town hall and visit its gardens. It is a completely free attraction. The pink design, without gold or silver, is both romantic and modern. If you have more time, you can visit Palazzo Doria-Tursi together, but there is a fee.

Basilica Ell’ Annunziata Genova is located in Genoa, Italy. It is a 17th-century Baroque-style church. The entrance is shaped like a Roman column-style temple and its history can be traced back to 1867. The outside is run-down and dilapidated but the inside is quite attractive, and the murals on the ceiling are stunning. The church was built in 1520 and then remodeled to its current appearance between 1591 and 1625. The interior is in Baroque style, with gorgeous Venetian stucco, golden walls and ceiling paintings, and inlaid marble decorations. The unpopular Italian city of Genoa has some Hong Kong style, especially the red mountain tram (Granarolo cablecar), which reminds people of the mountain cable car in Hong Kong. The mountain tram station is a ten-minute walk from Genoa Central Station. There is a tram every 40 minutes, and it takes 13 minutes to reach the top of the mountain station. You can choose to take the tram up the mountain in 13 minutes and walk down the mountain in 20 minutes. The Christopher Columbus House in Genoa, Italy, is an 18th-century reconstruction of the house in which Christopher Columbus grew up. According to historian Marcello Staglieno, the original house was most likely destroyed in the French Bombardment of Genoa in 1684. It was rebuilt in the early 18th century on the basis of the original ruins. The rebuilt structure had a height of five stories. However, the upper stories were built by placing their beams on the neighboring buildings. When the neighboring buildings were demolished around 1900, as part of the construction of Via XX Settembre, the upper stories of this building were removed, and it was reduced to its current height of two stories. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is striking in its appearance – the classic combination of striped marble looks so fresh and high-quality that it seems as if the building was built very recently. The majestic columns on the exterior deserve special attention. However, the most interesting experience was visiting the cathedral inside. It was completely different from what I expected based on its appearance. This creates a unique contrast between the exterior and interior.
