2024 George Town Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
George Town is the capital of the island and state of Penang, off the west coast of peninsular Malaysia known for its mix of cultures and its delicious street hawker food. The city was established in 1786 by the British as one of the three Straits Settlements along with Malacca and Singapore. Today its ancient core of well-preserved buildings provides an authentic view at this vibrant city with traditions that run deep. A mix of settlers from China, India, and beyond have created a mix of ethnic groups that each stay true to their cultures and religions. But perhaps most beloved for its street food, tourists fly in to George Town from across Asia to taste the classic hawker dishes.

Penang—Revisiting after 7 years
👋Hi~Penang
The nostalgic flavors of food and street scenes
Every stranger I met was super nice!
Why do I like small towns like Penang and Chiang Mai?
Because no matter how many years pass,
They still retain a lot of traditions
With almost no significant changes
Coming back after many years, I can still find the old feelings
It's just that I have changed after 7 years
My style has changed, my personality has changed, my skin color has changed...
This small town hasn't changed, but everything is different now

Exploring George Town, Penang: An Ancient Town of Murals, Cafés, and Street Food
📍 Itinerary & Sightseeing:
Wandering through George Town, Penang’s ancient town and UNESCO World Heritage site, felt like stepping back in time. We began by strolling through Armenian Street, admiring its colonial architecture and vibrant street art, including the famous “Children on a Bicycle” mural. The old shophouses and temples showcased the town’s rich history, blending beautifully with modern creativity.
🚇 Transportation:
We parked in the city center and explored the ancient town on foot, the best way to take in its narrow streets and hidden corners.
🏨 Accommodation:
We stayed at a heritage boutique hotel in the heart of the ancient district, with its charming wooden shutters and Peranakan tiles, perfectly reflecting the town’s timeless vibe.
📷 Photo Spots:
Every corner of this ancient town is photogenic. The murals on Muntri Street and the intricate details of Khoo Kongsi Clan House were some of our favorite spots. A cozy heritage café also provided the perfect photo op with its vintage décor.
🍜 Local Cuisine:
We savored Penang’s famous char kway teow, flavorful stir-fried noodles, and indulged in rojak, a tangy fruit salad. For a refreshing treat, we tried ais tingkap, a rose-flavored drink that’s a local favorite.
💡 Tips:
• Start early to beat the heat and enjoy quiet streets.
• Bring cash for street food.
• Don’t forget comfy shoes and sunscreen.
George Town is a captivating blend of ancient charm, modern art, and culinary delights—a place where history meets the present in every alley and bite.
The Fishing Villages in Penang
The fishing villages in Penang are another famous attraction. There are six main jetties in the fishing village zone: Lim Jetty, Yeoh Jetty, Mixed Jetty, Lee Jetty, Tan Jetty, and Chew Jetty. Chew Jetty is particularly popular among tourists because there are shops along both sides of the jetty.
However, we recommend Tan Jetty. It is a quiet and peaceful place, perfect for watching the sunset. This jetty is not yet crowded with tourists, making it a great check-in spot when visiting Penang.
Open: 24 hours.
If I ever visit Malaysia again, Penang will be my first choice.
Georgetown, the capital of Penang, is one of the oldest towns in Malaysia and is also listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site. The name "Georgetown" is inexplicably cute, and the best way to appreciate it is to wander around the city.
Take a rickshaw or walk the streets and alleys to find murals, which is a great way to explore Penang. These paintings are full of life and warmth, and they seem to tell stories of the past, mixed with the scent of the ancient city.
As you continue to wander, you may come across a church-like building, a Teochew-style arcade, or the sea... As you walk and look around, you may wonder if the scenery before you is exactly the same as your imagination of Nanyang.
Penang Hill is the Chinese name, while the English name is Penang Hill, which means "betel nut hill". Take the cable car to the top and enjoy a panoramic view of the city surrounded by green vegetation.
Memories are often intertwined with various senses, such as the picturesque scenery before your eyes, the charming scent in the air, and the exciting taste buds... Penang in my memory is closely related to a bowl of cendol.
Whether it's a street stall or a tea room, you can always find it. Green "noodles" topped with coconut milk, red beans, crushed ice, etc. In a season when the air is hot, a bowl of this is icy, sweet, and refreshing. No matter how much you eat, you won't get tired of it.
The "Toh Shun Tea Room", hidden in the alley, is still there today, and it seems to be just as popular. At that time, I went there early after waking up, so I didn't have to queue. The toast with kaya jam and the old-fashioned coffee are the perfect way to start a day of walking.
Penang's cuisine is a blend of Southeast Asian flavors and Fujian coastal specialties, so you won't be disappointed.
Unlike the crowds and skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi's nature and villages, Penang has everything you need. If I ever visit again, I would love to see how time has changed the streets I once walked.
🇲🇾Mark this list for ur food hunting in Penang💕😍
#travelchecklist #100waysoftravel
Penang, often hailed as the culinary capital of Malaysia, is a paradise for food lovers. The island’s rich cultural tapestry is reflected in its diverse and irresistible cuisine. Here’s a guide to the must-eat foods that define Penang’s gastronomic landscape:
1. Penang Laksa
This iconic dish is a must-try for anyone visiting Penang. Unlike the coconut milk-based laksa found in other parts of Southeast Asia, Penang Laksa is famous for its tangy, tamarind-infused broth, making it refreshingly tart. The soup is loaded with fresh fish, noodles, pineapple, mint, and cucumber, creating a complex blend of flavors that burst with every bite.
2. Char Kuey Teow
Char Kuey Teow is perhaps one of the most beloved street food dishes in Penang. This stir-fried noodle dish is cooked over high heat with soy sauce, fresh prawns, cockles, sliced Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, and egg. A good Char Kuey Teow has a slightly charred aroma from the high heat of wok cooking, known as 'wok hei', which is essential to this dish’s distinctive taste.
3. Cendol
To beat the tropical heat, indulge in a bowl of Cendol. This popular dessert features shaved ice topped with green rice flour jelly, palm sugar syrup, and coconut milk. It’s often served with red beans or sweet corn. The combination of creamy, sweet, and chewy textures makes Cendol a refreshing treat at any time of the day.
4. Yam Rice with Braised Pork
For those who prefer savory comfort food, the yam rice with braised pork is a standout. The rice is cooked with cubes of yam, lending a subtle sweetness that complements the savory and richly flavored braised pork. This dish is typically served with a side of salted vegetables and a spicy chili sauce.
5. Satay
No visit to Penang would be complete without trying Satay. These grilled skewers of marinated meat, be it chicken, beef, or lamb, are served with a delectable peanut sauce. Every bite offers a smoky flavor enhanced by the dip, making satay a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
Exploring Penang’s culinary offerings is like taking a journey through the heritage and traditions of its Chinese, Malay, and Indian communities. Each dish tells a story of migration, adaptation, and fusion, making dining in Penang an essential part of experiencing its culture.

🇲🇾 Penang's Culinary Delights: A Must-Eat Food Adventure
#travelchecklist
Penang, often hailed as the food capital of Malaysia, offers a gastronomic paradise for anyone looking to delve into the rich tapestry of flavors that Malaysian cuisine has to offer. From bustling street food stalls to quaint roadside eateries, Penang's must-eat dishes like Charcoal Char Kuey Teow, Oyster Omelette, Asam Laksa, and Duck Egg Char Kuey Teow represent a culinary heritage steeped in tradition and innovation.
Charcoal Char Kuey Teow
A visit to Penang would be incomplete without tasting Char Kuey Teow, especially the version fried over charcoal. This method imparts a unique smoky flavor to the dish, which features flat rice noodles stir-fried with shrimp, cockles, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, and chives. The high heat from the charcoal caramelizes the ingredients, creating a complex flavor profile that is both delicious and memorable.
Oyster Omelette (Oh Chien)
Another Penang specialty, the Oyster Omelette, combines small, plump oysters with a starchy batter and eggs, fried until crispy around the edges but still soft and gooey in the middle. It's often served with a spicy chili sauce that perfectly complements the rich taste of the oysters, making it a beloved choice among locals and visitors alike.
Asam Laksa
Asam Laksa is a tangy fish-based soup that is both spicy and sour, made from mackerel and tamarind juice. This noodle dish is then garnished with fresh mint, pineapple slices, thinly sliced onion, and a spoonful of shrimp paste, which deepens the flavor. Asam Laksa is a true representation of Penang's complex and bold flavors, a must-try for those who appreciate dishes that pack a punch.
Duck Egg Char Kuey Teow
For an even richer take on the traditional Char Kuey Teow, try the version that includes duck eggs instead of regular chicken eggs. The duck eggs provide a creamier texture and a richer flavor to the dish, making it a luxurious treat. This variation is particularly popular among food aficionados looking for an elevated version of this classic street food.
Visitor Tips
- Street Food Havens: Explore areas like Gurney Drive, Chulia Street, and the Penang Road for the best street food stalls.
- Eating Etiquette: Be prepared to share tables with strangers, as this is common in busy food courts and hawker centers.
- Local Beverages: Pair your meals with local drinks like 'Teh Tarik' or 'Lime Juice' to balance the rich flavors.

Sunlit Strolls and Scenic Views: Discovering the Charm of Chew Jetty
#penangtrip #penang #georgetown #chewjetty #100waysoftravel
We visited Chew Jetty in Penang on a hot afternoon, with the bright blue sky stretching endlessly above us. As we strolled along the wooden planks, we could see the iconic Penang Bridge in the distance, adding to the picturesque view.
Chew Jetty, part of the historic Clan Jetties of Penang, was established in the 19th century by Chinese immigrants. It’s one of the last remaining water villages, where homes are built on stilts over the sea. Despite the heat, we enjoyed the unique charm of the jetty and the beautiful scenery surrounding it.
