📍Travel Introduction Nagoya Trip [Gero-Takayama-Inuyama-Nagoya City] The small town of Gero in Nagoya! As soon as we picked up our rental car for the first leg of our Nagoya trip, we headed straight to Gero. Known as one of Japan's top three hot spring towns, Gero boasts ryokans with impressively large and excellent hot spring facilities. After soaking in the hot springs, I could genuinely feel my body becoming more relaxed☺️ 🚩Travel Route Since it was a hot spring trip, we mostly stayed at the ryokan! The town is quaint and small, making it easy to explore in just half a day. 🍜Recommended Restaurant The nabe-gyu sushi sold at a small shop in front of Ogawaya Ryokan was the most delicious sushi I had during the entire Nagoya trip!! If you visit Gero, don't miss out on this and make sure to try it! 🏠Recommended Accommodation We stayed at Ogawaya Ryokan! The facilities were so large that we needed a map to navigate, and the hot spring area was also expansive, making it fun to explore. The quality of the hot spring water was excellent, and I could immediately feel my body becoming more relaxed after soaking in it! It was the most satisfying accommodation of the entire Nagoya trip😊 💡Tips If you plan to arrive in Gero after sunset, I recommend choosing dinner over breakfast at your ryokan! Once the sun sets, there aren't many open restaurants in Gero, so it might be challenging to have a satisfying meal!

From Nagoya Station, take the JR Hida train (heading towards Toyama) to Gero. The journey takes only an hour and a half (Platform 11, queue at the green Hida train line). Known for its colorless, transparent, and silky smooth weak alkaline waters, it is often referred to as the "Beauty Bath." As soon as you step out of JR Gero Station, you'll find many shops promoting their "onsen" deals. Traveling alone, I not only wanted to enjoy the hot springs but also take a leisurely stroll through the traditional Japanese-style onsen town. So, I focused on gathering information about free foot baths, public baths, and day-use onsen facilities. You can pick up a map at the station! This "Beauty Bath" is said to be effective for rheumatism, neuralgia, motor function disorders, post-illness recovery, and fatigue relief. The source temperature of the spring reaches over 80°C. The free foot baths scattered throughout the streets each have unique designs, ranging from natural styles to traditional Japanese architecture and even European garden themes. If you try out all the free foot baths, you might not even need to spend money on a dedicated day-use onsen! I had a wonderful time enjoying myself without spending a dime. Remember to bring a small towel to dry your feet after the bath!

If you book in advance, you can save on transportation costs as there is a free shuttle bus from Nagoya Station to the accommodation. For an additional fee, you can reserve a private ryokan at a specific time, which was great! However, the ryokan had no windows and an open structure, which was a bit surprising for someone like me who values privacy 🤣 Both dinner and breakfast were included, and personally, I found the food delicious 👏🏻 Address: 260-1 Yunoshima, Japan Atmosphere/Facilities: Full of Japanese vibes Key Points: One of the larger Gero Onsen accommodations with reasonable pricing! Gero Onsen, one of Japan's top three hot springs! I visited Gero while traveling to Nagoya. Actually, this was my second visit. :) During my stay in Gero, I stayed at the Yamagataya Ryokan, which offers stunning river views from the rooms and serves delicious food—truly a great value accommodation! I tried breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Yamagataya. Breakfast was a clean and traditional Japanese meal, while lunch and dinner were served as kaiseki course meals. The upgraded Hida beef shabu-shabu I had for lunch was so delicious it brought tears to my eyes. 🥹🤤 The ryokan features both a large public bath and private baths, allowing you to choose according to your preference. Plus, they offer free ice cream! 🤫 With a convenient location, great views, and amazing food, this ryokan is a fantastic value. Highly recommended! 📍Yamagataya Ryokan, Gero

The bath is spacious enough for two people to enjoy comfortably. 📌 Masuya Ryokan Kaiseki Breakfast You can choose breakfast times at 7:30 AM, 8:00 AM, or 8:30 AM. The breakfast area is clean and divided into sections. The meal is a beautifully arranged set featuring noodles, rice, fish, seaweed, bulgogi, salad, and more. Nagoya - Gero Onsen - Takayama - Shirakawa-go - Tateyama Kurobe Day 1: It takes about 40 minutes to travel from Nagoya Airport to the city center, costing around ¥1000. Most restaurants close at 10 PM, while izakayas usually stay open until around midnight. On weekdays, closing times might be even later. Day 2: Purchased the Hida 3-Day Pass from JR, which includes round-trip bus tickets to Shirakawa-go (~¥12000). Visited Gero Onsen. The town was larger than expected, with shops, shrines, and everything you need. Explored Gero Gassho Village, which is relatively small with limited photo spots, but the mountain slide was very fun. Note that most restaurants are closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Day 3: Visited Takayama and Shirakawa-go. The bus pass needs to be exchanged in person, and staff will explain the bus schedules in detail. There were quite a lot of visitors, but about 10-20% of the shops were closed. Around 3-4 hours is sufficient to explore. Returned to Takayama and enjoyed Hida beef sukiyaki. Day 4: Spent the day exploring Takayama City, which has a nostalgic atmosphere. Strolled through the old streets and then returned to Nagoya. Day 5: Had Hida beef barbecue, visited Nagoya Castle, Osu Kannon, and Osu Shopping Street. Day 6: Joined a 2-day, 1-night local tour to Kamikochi and Tateyama Kurobe. Kamikochi is stunning with its clear mountains, majestic snowy peaks, and picturesque scenery that is truly refreshing. Day 7: Explored Tateyama Kurobe using six different modes of transportation, which took about 8 hours including sightseeing. Unfortunately, the weather was bad with strong winds and heavy rain, and the temperature dropped sharply, making it hard to enjoy photo-taking or the experience. Day 8: Visited Chubu Electric Power Museum, explored the underground shopping streets, and then headed back home.

A Picture-Perfect View 🖼️ My room faced the Gero Onsen Street, and when I opened the window, a beautiful view unfolded before my eyes. In the morning, a light mist gently covered the street, as if draping a mysterious veil over the ancient town. In the evening, the afterglow of the sunset bathed the mountains, turning the world into a warm orange-red. Every moment of the scenery was mesmerizing. A Relaxing Hot Spring Experience ♨️ The hot spring experience is a must-try here! The hot spring water at Yunoshimakan comes from mountain springs, clear and warm. Soaking in the hot spring, feeling the water gently caress my skin, all my fatigue and worries seemed to vanish. It was an indescribable pleasure! A Feast for the Taste Buds 🍱 When it comes to food, Yunoshimakan will not disappoint. Dinner is a traditional multi-course kaiseki meal, with each dish being exquisite and delicious, leaving a lasting impression. Breakfast is a Japanese set meal, with a rich combination of ingredients that are both nutritious and delicious. Every meal here is a feast for the taste buds. This trip to Gero Onsen Yunoshimakan allowed me to deeply experience the perfect blend of history and modernity. You can see the snow-capped mountains, the sea style, and the tram style at the same time. It is not inferior to Mount Fuji at all. It was a winter trip to Gifu, Japan with my partner. Gifu in winter is a magical escape filled with stunning scenery and cultural treasures 😍 We started our journey in Takayama, a charming city surrounded by the Japanese Alps. The preserved Sanmachi Suji district was a highlight, with its traditional wooden 🪵 buildings, sake breweries, and shops. Walking through the snow-covered streets felt like stepping back in time. The ambiance was perfect for photography, especially with the warm glow of lanterns at dusk. We also visited the Hida Folk Village, an open-air museum showcasing traditional houses covered in snow ❄️ a must-see for winter photography enthusiasts. 📍 Kamiichinomachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0846 Hida Folk Village 📍1-590 Kamiokamoto-machi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0055 We also visited Shirakawa-go, the iconic UNESCO World Heritage village. The sight of the gassho-zukuri houses blanketed in snow was absolutely surreal. The sunrise and sunset shots from here were spectacular, and the peaceful vibe made it one of the most memorable stops of our trip. At GeroGero Butter Stand, they sell butter sandwiches, food, drinks, and souvenirs made with locally sourced Gero milk. Located in the Gero Onsen town, the cute yellow exterior stands out! I immediately tried the butter soy sauce rice ball that I had been curious about, and the rich butter matched perfectly with the grilled rice ball. It was so delicious that I went back the next day to have it again. You can also enjoy your food while soaking in the milk-colored foot bath with cute calves!
