Germany's first visit to Friedenstein Castle | Spectacular, well-preserved medieval treasures
This time, under the guidance of German parents, we came to Friedenstein Castle (Schloss Friedenstein). This was our first visit to this world-famous medieval castle.
Standing on the top of the mountain overlooking the entire city, the view is vast, and the magnificence of the castle itself makes me amazed.
The castle is very well preserved, and the stone walls and the design of the interior of the building seem to take people back to the European era hundreds of years ago. It is a very large space with museums, exhibition halls and courtyards. It took us a whole afternoon to finish the tour, but we still felt that we had not finished.
The only pity is that most of the exhibition information and text descriptions are in German, so I can't fully understand the historical stories. Even so, just feeling the architectural atmosphere and culture here is an unforgettable experience.
If you are particularly interested in history, it is recommended that you rent guided tour headphones or do some homework in advance.

The temperature of history: Haus zum Sonneborn 🌞🏡
#2024TravelReview The Temperature of History: Haus zum Sonneborn 🌞🏡
I like this town very much. Every house is full of its own unique style and characteristics, giving people a very warm feeling. The architecture here combines traditional and modern elements, and every street has different surprises waiting for you to discover.
The most attractive thing is that there are very few tourists here, allowing me to stroll leisurely on the streets of the town and completely immerse myself in the peaceful atmosphere. There are no rushing crowds, only fresh air and a quiet pace, it's a great place to completely relax.
This is an ideal place if you like a quiet atmosphere and want to explore a small town with its own unique charm.

Gotha: One of my favorite towns in Germany
#2024TravelReview Gotha: One of my favorite towns in Germany
One of the most fascinating places in Germany for me! Although it is unpopular, it exudes an irresistible unique charm, and every corner amazes me.
The soul of Gotha is Schloss Friedenstein, one of the largest early Baroque palaces in Germany and is magnificent. The museum and library in the castle make people feel like they have traveled back to the aristocratic era, while the surrounding gardens are a quiet and beautiful place to relax. The cobblestone streets and historic buildings in the old town reveal the quaint charm of a German town.

Discover the quiet elegance of Gotha, where history and art unfold in a charming Thuringian setting. Start at the magnificent Friedenstein Castle, one of Germany’s largest early Baroque palaces, home to the Ekhof Theatre (one of the world’s oldest Baroque theaters) and fascinating art collections. Stroll through the tranquil Schlosspark, dotted with sculptures and old trees, and wander the quaint Market Square, framed by pastel-colored houses and cozy cafés. Don’t miss the Herzogliches Museum for Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces.
Getting There 🚆
Take a direct train from Erfurt (≈20 minutes) or Weimar (≈40 minutes). From Gotha station, it’s a pleasant walk or short tram ride to the castle and old town.

Friedenstein Castle & museums cost about €10–12 combined. Open generally 10 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Mondays.

A trip to Gotha 🇩🇪

Visiting Gotha in Germany was like stepping back in time! 🏰 This charming city in Thuringia is full of history and beautiful architecture. The highlight of my trip was definitely the Schloss Friedenstein, a stunning Baroque palace. The entrance fee was around €10, and it included access to the palace, museum, and the stunning Ekhof Theater, which is one of the oldest baroque theaters in the world. 🎭 Walking through the grand halls, admiring the art collections, and soaking in the history was an absolute treat.
I also spent time exploring the old town with its cobblestone streets, cozy cafes, and colorful buildings. The main market square was lively, and the views of the town hall were picturesque. 🏘️ For a bit of nature, I took a relaxing stroll through the Friedenstein Park, which is right next to the palace and perfect for a picnic or just enjoying the greenery. 🌳
Nearby, there’s the stunning Thuringian Forest for hiking enthusiasts, and Erfurt is just a short train ride away for even more exploration. 🚆 Gotha might not be as well-known as some other German cities, but its rich history, beautiful architecture, and relaxed vibe make it a hidden gem worth visiting. #trip #Gotha #Thuringia #BaroqueBeauty #HiddenGemGermany #SchlossFriedenstein
