I recently went on a trip to Nagasaki after a long time!! I visited various places such as Dozaki, Mizunoura, and Kusuhara Church on Fukue Island in the Goto Islands. I also enjoyed lots of delicious food like Sara Udon, Champon, and fresh fish from the Genkai Sea, leaving my stomach completely satisfied 😋 And of course, the last thing to do on a trip is to buy souvenirs!! When it comes to Nagasaki souvenirs, it has to be "Nagasaki Castella" 💕 After trying and comparing many different shops over the years, here are my two recommendations: ❶ Fukusaya Fukusaya is famous for its "one-person, one-process" method, where a single craftsman handles everything from cracking the eggs to baking the castella. They are committed to handmade production without using mixers, resulting in a fluffy and moist texture. The batter has a subtly refined sweetness, which pairs perfectly with the coarse sugar at the bottom. ❷ Bunmeido Known for its famous commercial jingle, "Castella is number one, the phone is number two, Bunmeido is the snack for 3 o'clock♪," Bunmeido uses carefully selected ingredients such as "Nanban Eggs" developed with contracted farms and glutinous rice syrup. [Goto Islands] Minshuku on Fukue Island I wanted to stay at a minshuku in the Goto Islands. I thought a minshuku would give me a more local feel than a hotel. 😊 The guesthouse I stayed at this time, Minshuku Hamabe, is located in a quiet village about a 50-minute drive from the city center. The owner also runs a ferry service, and many guests seemed to enjoy fishing. 🐟 Thoughts✍️ ・The landlady was absolutely wonderful, and I was impressed with her hospitality!! ・The rice is absolutely delicious ・The fresh sashimi is enough for about two people 😂 　(The colors are similar, but it was an assortment of several types.) The Goto Islands are made up of 129 islands, large and small. They're divided into two areas: Kamigoto in the north and Shimogoto in the south. This time, I visited Shimogoto for a two-day, one-night trip, focusing on Fukue Island. ✨ I flew from Haneda on Friday night and stayed the night before in Fukuoka. This allowed me to arrive on Fukue Island just after 9am! I visited Shinkamigoto Town and Goto City for 3 days and 2 nights 😊✨ You can travel to the islands from either Nagasaki Port or Sasebo Port, but this time I went to the Goto Islands from Nagasaki Port. ・Shinkamigoto Town There is a lot of nature, and you can experience making camellia oil, Goto udon, and Yakame salt, so I highly recommend it for those who want to feel the local island vibe! Shimashoku GINO, located on Fukue Island in the Goto Islands, is a wonderful restaurant where you can casually enjoy authentic Italian food made with rich ingredients from Goto. It stands alone in this beautiful rural landscape, but the sauce and dough of the pasta and pizza are authentic, and everything I ate was delicious✨ There are few restaurants for tourists in the Goto Islands (opening days and opening hours are much shorter than in the city center), so I recommend making a reservation for lunch or dinner. The jetfoil was incredibly smooth and quick, while the ferry provided blankets for lying down, making both options very comfortable. ⚫︎ Hotel Kararito Goto Islands (with breakfast included). ⚫︎ Meals - Oddon-tei (Goto Udon) - Yashio (Izakaya) A rental car is essential on the island. Once you start driving, you'll find the roads simple and easy to navigate, giving you much more freedom with a car. On the first day, it rained, but I enjoyed visiting churches and a museum. The Nizo Yamamoto Art Museum is a must-visit for Studio Ghibli fans! The second day was sunny. Onidake offered a refreshing breeze and breathtaking views of the sea. Takahama Beach exceeded expectations with its dazzling white sand and crystal-clear waters. The vibrant blue of the sea was stunning. Both the Goto Udon and the fresh seafood were absolutely delicious, so I highly recommend trying them. *Many izakayas were fully booked at night, so making reservations in advance is advisable if you plan to visit.

Onidake, a scoria cone towering over Fukue Island in the Goto Islands. It also has an observatory, which was featured in a movie, where you can enjoy a star-filled sky at night. The area is covered with short-cut grass, so even in summer, there are no annoying insects, making it a comfortable place to lie around and observe the stars. Enjoy the clear Milky Way, unique to this remote island with no city to the south. A car is required to visit. Purpose Enjoy the Goto Islands, home to World Heritage sites, by exploring both Kamigoto (Upper Goto) and Shimogoto (Lower Goto)! Schedule Day 1 Fly from Haneda Airport to Nagasaki Airport, then take another flight to Goto Fukue Airport. From there, a 45-minute bus ride will take you to the city center. Stay overnight at APA Hotel Nagasaki Ekiminami, located near Nagasaki Port. Since this trip was planned after work, I took the latest flight available. Day 2 Take a high-speed ferry from Nagasaki Port to Tainoura Port in Kamigoto, a journey of about 1 hour and 40 minutes. The ferry is operated by Goto Sangyo Kisen, and reservations are required. Transportation on the island is limited, so renting a car or hiring a sightseeing taxi is necessary. I opted for a sightseeing taxi and toured Kamigoto for about 3 hours, focusing on its churches. Visited spots include: - Old Tainoura Church - Hamaguri Beach - Kaido Shrine - Kurosaki Pass & Observatory - Kashiragashima Church - Aosagaura Church - Shirakusa Observatory The taxi dropped me off at Goto Islands Resort Hotel Margherita, marking the end of the day’s sightseeing. This small hotel is located on Nakadori Island, shaped like a cross, in the northern part of the Goto Islands. Perched on a hill overlooking the sea, it offers stunning sunset views. The Italian cuisine served at the hotel was also delightful. Day 3 I arranged for a taxi to take me to Wakamatsu Port Terminal, where I boarded the Goto Islands Cruise. The cruise departed from Wakamatsu Port Terminal and stopped at Naru Island (Egami Church), Hisaka Island (Old Gorin Church), the Christian Cave, Harinomen, and finally Fukue Port Terminal. From Fukue Port Terminal, I walked to Campana Hotel for my overnight stay. For dinner, I reserved a table at Tsubaki Chaya, a restaurant where I enjoyed delicious Goto seafood by the hearth. Since the hotel is near Kaizuko Beach, I arrived early to enjoy the beautiful seaside. Day 4 I joined a full-day sightseeing bus tour of Goto. The morning itinerary included: - Departure from Campana Hotel at 9:05 AM → Fukue Port at 9:20 AM → Imochiura Church (Lourdes) at 10:15 AM → Osezaki Lighthouse at 10:40 AM → Takahama Beach at 11:45 AM → Mizunoura Church (viewed from the bus) → Arrival at Fukue Port at 12:50 PM. Lunch was free time, and I enjoyed Goto Udon noodles near the port. The afternoon itinerary included: - Departure from Fukue Port at 1:50 PM → Dozaki Church at 2:10 PM → Samurai Residence Street (viewed from the bus) → Abunze Lava Coast (Visitor Center) at 3:20 PM → Return to Fukue Port at 4:10 PM. From Goto Fukue Airport, flights are available to Fukuoka or Nagasaki Airport. A bus from Campana Hotel takes you directly to the airport. I took the latest flight from Fukue Airport to Fukuoka Airport and then transferred for my return journey. Notes The Goto Islands are remote, so weather conditions can significantly impact travel, especially ferry schedules. Many of the churches, which are part of the World Heritage sites, have specific rules, such as restrictions on photography and events. Be sure to follow the rules. Transportation Public buses are limited on the Goto Islands, except on Fukue Island. Utilize tours, taxis, or rental cars effectively. Flights to Fukue Island are available, making access from Fukuoka or Nagasaki Airport convenient. Travel between Kamigoto and Shimogoto requires ferry transportation, so carefully check ferry schedules. Hotels Campana Hotel is conveniently located near the port on Fukue Island, with nearby restaurants and a convenience store within walking distance. Margherita Hotel, located in Kamigoto, is a charming hotel inspired by churches. However, its location is remote, with no nearby facilities, so plan accordingly. #japanitinerary hotel is beautiful it is the design between a monetary and a high tech new hotel with spacious rooms. Very strange vibe very zen. I missed totally a place to sit outside a terrace or a garden and a pool. Weather was great but you can not sit outside at all. I know Japan is not keen on terraces and a place to enjoy the fresh air and the sun but we have a million dollar view but only in our own private onsen you can go outside,overall is awesome

Stayed at Kararito Goto Islands to celebrate a birthday. Located by the seaside in Nagasaki's Goto Islands, this facility offers a serene retreat. Check-in was smooth, and upon entering the room, I was greeted by the natural scent of wood and a very clean and welcoming space. Right in front of the room, a beautiful beach stretched out before my eyes. Although the weather was cloudy on this day, the scenery was still stunning and left me deeply impressed. The desk in the room is positioned to face the ocean, making it perfect for a workation-style trip where you can enjoy the view while getting some work done. Dinner and breakfast featured an abundance of fresh ingredients from Goto, and the meals were absolutely delicious. With many creative dishes, the dining experience felt refreshing and unique. I would love to return to this hotel on a sunny day next time.

When visiting Fukue Island in the Goto Islands, having a car is essential. For this reason, I joined a bus tour to explore the area. One of the most remarkable spots was the Osezaki Lighthouse, which is famous for being featured in the climax scene of the movie "Villain." It takes nearly an hour to reach from the central area, making it quite far. The lighthouse is perched dramatically on the edge of the sea, so if you plan to go directly beneath it, you should be prepared for a challenging trek. I chose to take photos from a vantage point where I could see the entire view. The contrast between the "white lighthouse," the "sky blue," and the surrounding greenery was absolutely stunning. Additionally, my visit to the Osezaki Lighthouse was even more moving because I had seen a painting of its magnificent scenery the day before at the "Nizo Yamamoto Art Museum." Nizo Yamamoto is an artist who has worked on numerous background artworks for Studio Ghibli films. If you've seen Ghibli movies, you're likely familiar with the beauty of their backgrounds. This art museum, which showcases Yamamoto's works, is located on Fukue Island, his hometown in the Goto Islands. The Goto Islands also have a rich history of Christian faith. I visited churches like the Imochiura Church, and I was deeply impressed by the blend of abundant nature and profound culture. The Goto Islands are truly an amazing destination!

This is Takahama Beach, located in the Goto Islands. It is about a 40-minute drive from Fukue Port or Goto Tsubaki Airport. The stunning combination of white sand and emerald blue and green waters is breathtaking. It's often referred to as Japan's most beautiful sea, and its beauty certainly lives up to the reputation. During low tide, the sandy beach forms enchanting wave-like patterns called ripple marks, adding to its charm. The high transparency of the water makes it a sight to behold, even if you don't go swimming. Whether you admire it up close or take in the panoramic view from an observation point, the scenery is truly captivating.

#EnjoyJapan Yamamoto Hifumi, who served as art director for many classic animations, is from Goto City, and he also worked on anime such as "Castle in the Sky," "Grave of the Fireflies," "Princess Mononoke," and "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time." At the museum, in addition to hand-drawn background paintings from his early period to his later years, unpublished art settings, image boards, and production tools created during the production process are exhibited, giving a glimpse into the world of background art. (╹◡╹) I was really happy to be able to see Hifumi Yamamoto's manuscripts and other materials during my 1-hour stay ♪ I was healed by his wonderful works in a short time.
