It’s not deliberately designed art; it’s the result of hundreds of years of farming passed down through generations of the Yao people. The layered terraces stretch from an altitude of 300 meters all the way up to 1100 meters. The beauty of the lines and the vast scale truly leave you speechless. First, how to get there. The Longji Terraces are located in Longsheng Various Nationalities Autonomous County, Guilin, Guangxi. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Guilin, mostly mountain roads but in good condition. You can also take a high-speed train to Guilin, then catch a direct bus from Guilin Bus Station to Longji. Location: Longji Terraces Scenic Area, Longsheng Various Nationalities Autonomous County, Guilin, Guangxi ⏰ Best time to visit: May during the water irrigation period and from late September to mid-October before harvest 💰 Ticket prices: Ping’an Village 80 RMB, Jinkeng Village 80 RMB, General ticket 100 RMB 💡 Tips: Jinkeng Village is larger in scale, Ping’an Village is closer to the county town The first impression upon arrival is—mountains. The entire mountain is cultivated into terraces, layer upon layer winding from the foot to the summit, with up to more than 70 levels in some places. From a high vantage point looking down, the terraces look like huge steps covering the whole mountain; from below looking up, the terraces resemble ribbons hanging down from the sky. The Longji Terraces are divided into two main scenic areas: Ping’an Village and Jinkeng Village. I visited Jinkeng Village. Jinkeng Village has the largest scale of terraces in Longji, with three viewing platforms—Xishan Shaole Viewing Point, Jinfo Peak Viewing Point, and Dajie Thousand-Layer Ladder Viewing Point. Xishan Shaole is best for sunrise, Jinfo Peak is best for sunset, and Dajie Thousand-Layer Ladder is perfect for capturing the lines. I was lucky to visit in May during the water irrigation period. The terraces freshly filled with water become mirrors reflecting the sky and clouds, making the entire hillside shine. At that time, the temperature difference between morning and evening is large, and fog often forms in the mountains. At sunrise, sunlight passes through the mist and shines on the mirror-like terraces, reflecting golden light. That scene is unforgettable. Autumn is also great to visit. When the rice ripens, the terraces turn golden yellow, layering from the mountain top down to the foot. When the wind blows, the golden waves of rice ripple layer by layer, creating a spectacular view. A few practical tips: First, you can only walk inside the scenic area. There are many mountain steps, so wear non-slip shoes; it’s difficult to walk on rainy days. Second, accommodation is recommended in Tiantou Village or Dazhai Village. The farm stays are basic but the hosts are very warm, and it’s convenient for watching the sunrise. Third, the temperature difference between morning and evening is large in the mountains, so bring a jacket even in summer. Fourth, the best time for photos is within one hour after sunrise when the light is most beautiful. Fifth, Yao farm stays offer local bamboo tube rice and native chicken, with very simple and authentic flavors. Guilin is well known for its stunning Karst Mountains and the beautiful sunset/sunrise/sea of clouds view they offer! 🌄 One of the best accomodations I stayed at during my trip to Guilin was Yangshuo Yunshe Mountain Guesthouse in Xingping, nestled in the mountains across the river. With its spacious rooms and reasonably priced homey meals, the Guesthouse is the perfect getaway from the bustling touristy spots. Besides, the mountain retreat spot is a 45 min hike to the viewpoint at Damian Mountain, with one of the best mountain viewpoints in the region! The trail from the guesthouse is easy to navigate and lined with beautiful tangerine trees 🍊. The ascent was not too difficult, and anyone of moderate fitness will be able to manage.
