To my surprise, that post received a lot of interest. It made me wonder: “If that is one of the world’s shortest international flights, what are the other incredibly short commercial flights around the world?” 🤔 So this time, instead of talking about just one route, I went deeper and looked at some of the shortest scheduled passenger flights you can find around the world. When islands are separated by water, roads don’t exist, or crossing by sea takes considerably longer, a short flight can become an essential connection rather than a luxury. · -- 🇨🇬🇨🇩 But One Flight Brought Me Back to My Previous Post… ✈️ Brazzaville 🇨🇬 → Kinshasa 🇨🇩 The two cities sit on opposite sides of the Congo River, only around 24 km apart. Looking at the map, you might think: “That’s incredibly close.” And it is. But here comes the fascinating part. 🌊 One river separates two countries. ✈️ Yet there is an international air route connecting them. 🛫 And it can be operated by a Boeing 737-class jet, not just a tiny aircraft. ASKY operates a direct Brazzaville–Kinshasa service. That alone makes this route fascinating. · -- 💰 But the biggest surprise isn’t the distance… It’s the ticket price. 😳 When I checked the operating dates on Trip.com and searched different dates, the one-way fares I found were around: 🇨🇬 Brazzaville → Kinshasa — ~US$450 🇨🇩 Kinshasa → Brazzaville — ~US$344 That’s for a one-way journey. So naturally, I started wondering: Why would someone pay US$300–450 for a journey of only around 24 km? And this is where the story gets interesting. · -- 👔 Who actually uses this flight? This isn’t necessarily a flight everyone needs. But for business travellers, international travellers, professionals travelling for work, and people who place a high value on time, an air connection between the two cities can make practical sense. When crossing an international border, the distance on the map is only part of the journey. There can be border procedures, transportation, waiting time and logistics to consider. So the real value of the flight may not be the kilometres it saves. It may be the time and convenience it saves. And that made me think: A flight doesn’t always make the distance shorter. Sometimes, it simply makes the journey easier. · -- ❤️ And personally… This is what I love about travelling. Sometimes the most interesting travel stories are not about the biggest cities or the most famous landmarks. They are hidden in places where two cities are only a few kilometres apart, yet a river, an international border and thousands of people’s daily lives make that short distance surprisingly complicated. 24 km may look tiny on a map. But distance isn’t always measured in kilometres.
