The Charm of Luan River—Shandian River
Leaving Kulun Naoer and driving for a while, we passed by the Shandian River Wetland and arrived at the Luan River Charm Scenic Area. However, we did not enter the scenic area but went a bit further and climbed a small hill on one side. From here, we could overlook the winding Shandian River, which somewhat resembles the nine bends and eighteen turns of Bayinbuluke in Xinjiang. Although the viewing angle is slightly inferior to that inside the scenic area, it's free here, which is great! The small village at the foot of the hill is very peaceful and quiet.
National Heritage Check-in: Shuzhuanglou Yuan Tomb (National Level 5) & Xiaohongcheng Ruins (National Level 6)
Shuzhuanglou Yuan Tomb is located in Nangou Village, Guyuan County, Zhangjiakou. It is a fifth batch national key cultural relic protection unit, dating back to the Yuan Dynasty, classified as an ancient tomb.
The tomb's above-ground hall is popularly known as the 'Shuzhuanglou' of Empress Xiao of the Liao Dynasty. It faces south and is built with a beamless arch structure of blue bricks, standing 9 meters tall. The building has a square plan with arched doors on the south, east, and west walls, and an arched dome roof. Inside the building, a Mongolian noble's tomb was discovered, along with precious artifacts such as clothing and gold ornaments characteristic of the Yuan Dynasty Mongolian culture. However, a careful reading of related archaeological materials reveals that experts believe Shuzhuanglou is a composite structure that continued from the Tang, Song, and Yuan Dynasties, initially serving as a Tang Dynasty military storage and later converted into a Yuan Dynasty noble tomb complex.
Shuzhuanglou is 150 kilometers from Zhangjiakou city center, about a two-hour drive. The entrance fee is 10 yuan, and visitors can see three coffins inside the Shuzhuanglou, including a tree burial, but cannot go down.

Xiaohongcheng Ruins are located in Xiaohongcheng Village, Shandianhe Township, Guyuan County, Zhangjiakou. It is a sixth batch national key cultural relic protection unit, dating back to the Yuan Dynasty, classified as an ancient site.
The site centers around the Xiaohongcheng Ruins, including surrounding Yuan Dynasty relics such as Dongxiaocheng, Jijibao, and ash pits. It was the location of the Chahan Naoer Palace. Xiaohongcheng has a rectangular plan with mixed earth and stone walls and a protective moat outside. Gates are located in the middle of the east, west, and south walls. A large palace foundation is located slightly north of the central axis of the city. However, the entire site is now fenced off with iron nets, ostensibly to protect the relics, but it looks like a large area of wild grass, with only the national protection monument standing to declare its national heritage status.

Shuzhuanglou Yuan Tomb
Shuzhuanglou Yuan Tomb is located 7.5 kilometers east of Guyuan County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, in the heart of Jinlianchuan. It is a Yuan Dynasty Mongolian noble tomb. The entire site is 140 meters long from north to south, 74 meters long from east to west, and covers a total area of about 10,400 square meters.
Shuzhuanglou Yuan Tomb has a unique architectural style, being a single-story brick structure. It is 9.1 meters high with a square floor plan, each side 10.69 meters long. It has windows on the east and west sides and an arched door on the south side, with concave decorative lines outside the door. The upper part of the parapet wall is shaped like a mountain, the top of the building has a hemispherical appearance, and the interior has a dome.
The purpose and construction date of this building are not clearly documented. It is said to be the dressing and grooming place of Empress Dowager Xiao of the Liao Dynasty, hence the name "Shuzhuanglou" (Dressing Building). In 1999, through exploration and excavation by archaeological staff from Hebei Province, Zhangjiakou City, and Guyuan County, a Yuan Dynasty brick tomb was discovered underground inside the building, containing the remains of one man and two women, indicating it was a noble tomb of the Yuan Dynasty. This building is a rare example of an above-ground structure for a Mongolian noble tomb. Many similar above-ground structures and underground tombs are distributed around the building, with 24 Yuan tombs excavated and organized, yielding a batch of precious cultural relics. Among them, fragments of a stone tablet with inscriptions such as "Kuli Jisi Jiu" provide important physical data for studying the tomb owner. This site offers substantial and comprehensive historical facts for studying the religious rituals, burial customs, clothing, and architecture of the northern Mongolian Yuan tribes, holding significant historical importance.
On June 25, 2001, Shuzhuanglou Yuan Tomb was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as part of the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
On December 24, 2021, Shuzhuanglou Yuan Tomb was included in the list of "100 Important Archaeological Discoveries in Hebei in a Century" at the Hebei Provincial Field Archaeology Report Meeting.

Laozhanggou
Laozhanggou is located on the side of County Road 404 in Fengyuandian Township, Guyuan County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. It is a free attraction known for its beautiful natural scenery and wild off-road activities. About 1 kilometer from Provincial Road 404, there is an independent boulder between two mountains, which looks like a giant's footprint from a distance. The name Laozhanggou comes from this.
Laozhanggou is located on the Bashang Plateau, where ravines are densely distributed, green mountains stand tall on both sides, and the gully is full of gravel. A stream flows slowly from the valley, sometimes visible and sometimes hidden. Clear springs flow in the gully, and meadows coexist with forests on the slopes. During the rainy season, the area is often reshaped by flash floods. This is also the source of the Heihe River.
The gully features famous natural sights such as Hero Slope and Big Footprint, making it a popular destination for off-road enthusiasts from all over the country.
Laozhanggou is undeveloped and open to the public for free.
There is no public transportation available, so it is recommended to drive there.
As it is far from villages and towns, it is advisable to bring food and drinks for emergencies.

There is a Swan Lake in Guyuan
Every summer, when it gets hot in Beijing, I come to Guyuan to stay for a few days. Guyuan is really a great place to escape the summer heat. Even when it is hot in Beijing, it remains cool here, and you might even need to wear thicker clothes in the morning to stay warm.
Every time I come, I also visit Swan Lake to watch the sunrise and take photos. It's a nice place for that. In the evening, there are bonfire parties and barbecues. Many young people like to come here to eat grilled meat, drink, and watch the bonfire parties.
A few years ago, the name was changed back to its original Mongolian name, and now it is called Kulun Nur 😊
Guyuankou Travel|I Came for the Roast Whole Lamb
China·Guyuankou 2024 National Roast Lamb Competition and Kulunnuoer Roast Lamb Festival Successfully Held
Because of this roast whole lamb, I got to know Guyuankou and fell in love with Kulunnuoer! This weekend, the Chenggele Square in the Kulunnuoer Tourist Resort of Guyuankou County was filled with the aroma of roasted meat. The entire square was enveloped in the tantalizing scent of roasting lamb. This is the venue for the China·Guyuankou 2024 National Roast Lamb Competition and Kulunnuoer Roast Lamb Festival. One by one, the lambs were roasted to perfection over charcoal, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, attracting numerous tourists to stop and watch.
From June 27th to 29th, the China·Guyuankou 2024 National Roast Lamb Competition and Kulunnuoer Roast Lamb Festival grandly opened. This competition was hosted by the Beijing Culinary Association, Tianjin Hotel Association, Hebei Tourism Association, and Hebei Hotel Culinary and Catering Industry Association, and organized by Blue Whale Holdings Group. It is a concrete practice of Zhangjiakou City to vigorously expand the cultural tourism market and night economy consumption, actively responding to the provincial goal of "So Close, So Beautiful, Weekend in Hebei" for cultural tourism industry development. The roast lamb festival includes pre-competition forums, the roast lamb festival opening ceremony, on-site production and display of roast whole lamb by participating teams, public judging, and an award ceremony. A total of 100 teams from Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and other regions competed in two groups: roast lamb and roast meat. The atmosphere on-site was extremely lively!

🥾Dressing Recommendations
6-16 degrees, breezy and slightly cool, cold in the early morning and evening. Recommended thermal underwear, windproof jackets, and hiking shoes.
🏠Accommodation Recommendations
Stay the night before and set off the next day. I chose "Xingmeng Camping Folklore" which is about 5-6 kilometers from the entrance, and there are other homestays to choose from. The boss said that there have been many hikers recently, and many hiking groups also choose to stay here.
The Dushikou section of the Great Wall
The Dushikou is located at the junction of the northern Hebei mountains and the Bashang Grassland, serving as a mountain pass where the Gu River enters the borderlands, and also an important passageway from the grasslands into the mountainous areas. During the more than 200 years of the Ming Dynasty, wars were frequent at Dushikou, and days of peace were rare.
If you are looking to find an authentic section of the ancient Great Wall, to quietly visit and experience the vicissitudes of time, Dushikou is a great choice!

Second visit to Laozhanggou | The world suddenly turns to evening, and the mountains and rivers are already in autumn
| The world suddenly turns to evening, and the mountains and rivers are already in autumn.🍁 Follow the reading group for a second visit to Laozhanggou, a round trip on the same day, walking a small loop of 18km, with the autumn feeling stronger than the first time, and the colors of various leaves turning deeper🪵. The clear sky☀️ in early October was much better than the cloudy one during the first visit, making for great photography. At the mountain top, we also encountered mountain bikers🏍️ charging up the slopes, and many obedient cows🐮 in Banjiegou, which was very joyful🎉🎉🎉
📍Navigation: Laozhanggou exit point
🚌Transport: Join a tour group or self-drive
🎫Ticket: Free
🧭Route: Search for 1001 Laozhanggou in two steps, exit point - Big Footprint - Laozhanggou - Banjiegou, forming a small loop, with a total distance of 18.84km and a climb of 480m. Compared to the 22km large loop, it lacks the Brave Man's Slope and Cypress Forest, but if you climb fast, you can take the large loop.
🔖Journey: The lowest temperature in Laozhanggou can reach -2°C🥶 in early October. Arriving at the starting point at 11 am, the outdoor🌡️ temperature was about 12°C, and it was quite cold when getting off the car. Compared to the first time staying nearby and starting the hike at 7:30 am, starting at 11 am would be very comfortable, with most of the journey on the sunny side, very warm😚. The leaves on both sides of Laozhanggou were deeper in color, so be sure to observe both sides, as it's easy to encounter trees that are all yellow🟡 or all red🔴. Stand under the tree and look up to take photos📸, which will turn out great. Especially at the first small hill cliff, there is a completely yellow cypress tree🍁. During the holiday period, you can encounter mountain bikers🏍️ on the slopes, and it's fun to watch them break through; if they're not fast enough, they get stuck on the slope. After coming down the big slope, there is a new path that I haven't walked before, with many treasure trees hidden on both sides, and the leaves are very beautiful. Reaching Banjiegou, you will meet many cows🐮, all very obedient, and you can keep taking photos of the cows📸.
⚠️⚠️⚠️Tips:
1️⃣The temperature in Laozhanggou is very low in early October. If camping, be sure to bring enough warm clothing, check the forecast in advance, and wear a windbreaker if the wind is above level 4, as it will be very cold when climbing;
2️⃣Before reaching the starting point this time, all vehicles are required to register, and forest fire warning flags have been erected on both sides of the road, indicating that the mountain closure date is getting closer;
3️⃣For a round trip on the same day, if you walk fast, you can challenge the 22km large loop. You must be quick, as it's 4km more, and try to leave for Beijing at 5 pm;
4️⃣In autumn, there's no need to carry a lot of water, 3-4 bottles will suffice, with one bottle left in the car, as you won't drink much due to the cold weather.
Swan Lake in Guyuan | A great place to cool off and escape the summer heat
At the end of July, my family went on a trip to the Bashang area of Hebei, and we stumbled upon the peaceful and beautiful Swan Lake in Guyuan County, which made us linger and forget to return.
Swan Lake is located three kilometers north of the county seat of Guyuan, covering an area of 400 acres, with a water area of 150 acres, a natural freshwater lake surface, and rippling blue waves, with a good ecological environment. The place is full of green mountains, clear waters, lush grass, beautiful flowers, refreshing air, and clear winds. When the grass grows and the warblers fly, countless swans, cranes, wild ducks, and other waterfowl rest and pass by here, making it a paradise for birds, hence the name Swan Lake.
After entering the scenic area, we rented a four-person bicycle with a canopy and rode along the forest path towards the lake. The first thing that caught our eye was a sea of flowers, with two types of flowers, Celosia and Corn Poppy, blooming beautifully in the fresh air and bright sunshine. When we arrived at the lakeside, we saw a huge Guanyin statue on a small island extending into the lake, and on the shore dock, there was a large rock with the three big characters of 'Swan Lake' engraved on it, where some people were taking commemorative photos.
We cycled along the lake, with the breeze on our faces, which was very pleasant. Next to a small grove, we stopped again to take photos on the grass, with trees and grass on one side and lake water and mountains on the other, creating a picturesque scene that was intoxicating.
Due to time constraints, we had to end our trip and leave Swan Lake reluctantly. In my heart, I said: Goodbye, Swan Lake, I will come back again!
The world is big, and Kulun Naor is beautiful
The world is big, the scenery is beautiful, there are many opportunities, life is short, if you also like poetry and the distance, then come to the 'spring has a hundred flowers, autumn has the moon, summer has a cool breeze, winter has snow' Kulun Naor to see.
In the deep winter, the Kulun Naor Lake is frozen and quiet, dressed in silver. Recently, the 'Hebei·Guyuan County Kulun Naor 6th Ice and Snow Fishing and Hunting Cultural Tourism Season' grandly opened, and guests gathered in Kulun Naor to watch the winter fishing, enjoy the ice lake snow scene, and taste delicious lake fish.
On the frozen surface of Kulun Naor, there are activities such as collecting sacred fire, sacrificing the lake to wake up the net, ice fishing in winter, and auctioning the first fish. With the rhythm of the music, the fishermen dressed in Mongolian costumes sing and dance, thanking the gifts of nature and wishing life to be better.
The fisherman wearing a white stubble sheepskin jacket and a waistband held a grand ceremony of sacrificing the net, worshiping the lake god, and drinking the wine ceremony, loudly reciting the words of the lake and the net, praying for the lake god to bless the fishermen to be safe every year, as if bringing people back to that distant era.
With the booming drums, the winter fishing ceremony reached its climax. The large mechanical winch started to rotate, the lake water was blooming, and the kilometer-long giant net slowly tightened under the ice. Tourists from all over the place stared at the fish mouth, the fishermen shouted high and loud chants, and worked hard to pull the net out of the ice surface. The lively carp, silver carp, and crucian carp were rolling and jumping in the net, jumping on the ice surface, which was very spectacular.
On the second day of self-driving, I went to the farthest stop of the trip, Zhangjiakou Wuyuan Lightning River, and traveled 400 kilometers. Its not easy to get around the same day! Tents, picnic equipment, and photographic equipment stuffed the entire trunk, and I had to bring enough water and rations to my family.
Departed, the air after the heavy rain is cool and transparent, and the blue sky and white clouds all the way are beautiful.
noon, parking to find a piece of open space to support the tent to rest for lunch, turned over for a long time, a big collapse, we did not bring a pot? ? ? Not far from there is a family from the driving barbecue, and I frenzed my face to ask for help, borrowed a pot from others, happy, boiled boiled instant noodles, egg ham sausage added to open the meal! Delicious on earth!
Im going to take the self-driving tour on the go, a tough hardcore challenge. Under the leadership of many old drivers, we set up a small team to challenge the most famous off-road holy land in North China.
The route of our trip is very simple. From Beijing, the first stop is the famous post-town stone, the second stop is Laozhanggou, then sail to Fengning prairie and finally enter Fengning County. Rest and return to Beijing for two days and one night.
said that it is self-driving travel, but it is not so simple. We are experiencing road conditions that ordinary vehicles and urban SUVs cannot drive, and fully armed off-road vehicles can pass. Equipment can not be rushed to challenge.
The grassland of this season is still lacking in green, but the gradually melting rivers and the flocks of cattle and sheep are foretelling the vitality of spring.
Love the grassland, fall in love with the horse, and the Fengning Bashang grassland with the first grassland in the north of Beijing can't be missed. If there is no strong off-road vehicle, you can go straight to the grassland through the road. If you have a hard-core off-road that is armed to your teeth, you may wish to meet a friend and challenge the Hanpo with the old driver.
