A scenic drive from Chengdu brings you through the various valleys en route to this magical place...Hailuogou and it's National Park Area. The area wasn't very busy when we visited because of the current epidemic and less people travelling these days. However, the hot springs are still available and ready to use. What a fantastic way to end a long day of trekking up mount Minya Konka and the canyon passes than to come back in the evening and sit in here for a few hours with a few cans of beer. Honestly forgot about the temperature around us because of the wonderful water and steam. Any aches and pains picked up during the day are soothed by spending time in one of these springs. The next morning honestly felt better and ready to go again! 😁😁😁 #hotsprings

Before the earthquake, Conch Valley was often criticized for being "not beautiful enough." After the earthquake, its popularity plummeted even more. I even saw some Western Sichuan bloggers advising against visiting Conch Valley. It wasn’t until I visited in person that I realized there was some truth to this. It takes about a 4-hour self-drive from Chengdu to get there. Although the scenery along the way is beautiful, the journey is somewhat long. Upon arriving at the Conch Valley Scenic Area, I found it is divided into three parts: the "Core Touring Area," "Conch Valley Glacier Forest Park," and "Gongga Mountain Conch Valley Nature Reserve." If you want to see glaciers, you can only choose to visit the "Conch Valley Glacier Forest Park" and the "Gongga Mountain Conch Valley Nature Reserve." 🔥Recommended spots: Conch Valley Glacier Park; Red Stone Beach; Mugecuo (ticket 70 RMB); Swallow Valley (ticket 15 RMB). 🚗Transportation: Driving yourself is the most convenient, about a 4-hour drive from Chengdu; you can also rent a car in Moxi Town to get there.

The glacier forms a distinctive "U"-shaped valley with a 30-kilometer-long glacier tongue extending downwards for about 1000 meters, with the central section at an altitude of 2500-3500 meters. Due to the high altitude, the climate is drastically different, with significant temperature variations throughout the year. Summers are cool, but there are large temperature differences between day and night; winters are cold, and avalanches can occur. It is recommended to check the local weather forecast before traveling. When visiting Hailuogou, you can take a sightseeing bus or hike. The sightseeing bus starts from the foot of the mountain, climbs along a winding mountain road, passes Camp 4, and goes directly to Camp 3. From Camp 3, visitors can choose to hike or take the cable car up the mountain. Along the way, you can enjoy spectacular views of snow-capped mountains, primeval forests, and glaciers. Visitors can also participate in local folk activities, such as picking caterpillar fungus and watching Tibetan song and dance performances. It's about a three-hour drive from Chengdu to the town of Moxi. You can stroll along the river and browse the local shops. In addition to Chinese, they all offer English and Tibetan services. There are plenty of hotels with hot springs; we stayed at the Moxi Hotel. It's both a hotel and a hot spring. I wouldn't recommend it; it's a bit pricey and the conditions aren't great. You can find much better options, but you need to book in advance. We were at the Moxi Hotel when all the locals are on a three-day vacation. We paid 450 yen per night for a room. Furthermore, the power in the hot springs area went out that evening, so the pools weren't heated. The next morning, we went to the bus stop. From there, the bus took us about an hour up an endless winding road to the cable car, which was already at an altitude of 3,400 meters. Anyone prone to altitude sickness should be physically prepared. For those who get car sick, too. By the time we took the cable car up, the altitude was already 3,700 meters. The views are simply breathtaking. Definitely worth the trip. It's quite cold below the clouds. Up above, the sun was scorching hot. Bring some SPF. We even took off our jackets and wore sweaters. We witnessed an avalanche, even twice—an incredible sight! There's a large Buddhist stupa and a hitching post for khiy-morins (multicolored prayer flags, as the Buryats call them). The trip from Chengdu can be completed in two days—quite a satisfying experience! You can even set aside two regular weekends if you leave in the evening after work! I recommend it to everyone! Day 1: Gongga Mountain Scenery 🌄 Set off in the morning and first enjoy the Gongga Mountain view from a guesthouse in Moxi Ancient Town. (Photo 3) The sunlight shining on the snowy mountain is really healing! Take a few photos to start a wonderful day. Day 2: Hailuogou Scenic Area 🚠 At 8 AM, take the cable car up the mountain. (Photo 4) The cable car passes through clouds and mist, with Gongga Mountain faintly visible behind. The cable car after winter snow is even more dreamy and looks great in photos! 🎢 After arriving at Camp 4, first visit the Glacier Park. (Photo 5) Although it’s a bit cold, seeing so many ice pillars and glaciers is totally worth it! There are also snowmobiles, ice skating, and other activities. ⭐Hailuogou 📍Located in the southeastern part of Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan Province, on the eastern slope of Mount Gongga, it is an extremely high mountain area on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. 🏔It is the lowest altitude, closest to major cities, and most accessible low-altitude modern maritime glacier in East Asia, forming a comprehensive tourist scenic area with intact primitive forests and alpine boiling, hot, warm, and cold springs. ❄The Hailuogou Glacier, also known as Glacier No. 1, is 14.7 kilometers long and is the longest of the 71 glaciers on Mount Gongga❗️ ❄The Great Icefall, 500–1100 meters wide and 1080 meters high, is the tallest and most spectacular glacier waterfall discovered in China to date❗️ ❄The glacier tongue extends 6 kilometers into the primitive forest, creating a rare landscape where glacier and forest coexist❗️ ♨As is well known, Hailuogou’s hot springs are authentic natural sulfur springs. For those wanting to soak in hot springs, Hailuogou is definitely the right choice! 1. From Chengdu to Moxi Ancient Town takes about 4.5 hours (Tuzi Travel: round-trip ticket 130 RMB/person, usually pick-up at Xin Nanmen or Chengdu East Bus Station, return tickets available on Intercity Travel, driver will pick you up) Travel time is for reference only. 2. Moxi Ancient Town is currently in the off-season with few tourists. It has three streets, including Mao Zedong’s former residence, the Moxi Red Army Long March Exhibition Hall, and the Catholic Church on Moxi Ancient Street (keep going down, there are signs). The town is still under reconstruction due to a previous earthquake, so there are not many shops. 3. Entering the valley: first go to the Visitor Center to take a shuttle bus, which takes about an hour to reach Camp No. 4. Recommended route: Camp No. 4 — round-trip cable car to Ganheba — Camp No. 3 — Dongga Temple — Caohaizi — Visitor Center. 4. Camp No. 4: Take the cable car to see the glacier. Hailuogou has three major glaciers: the largest is Glacier No. 1, which is the Great Icefall. Arrive early to see the golden sunlight on the mountain without fog, and the Wolf Totem (a wolf-shaped natural erosion formation between Glacier No. 1 and No. 2). Mount Gongga is sacred to Tibetans, so there are also a white stupa and Four-Faced Buddha. The cable car descends to Ganheba. Ganheba: Be sure to hike here; the snowy scenery is beautiful, with high and low altitude plank roads (I took the low altitude from p5-7). Note ⚠️ there are macaques here! (They look hungry, eating garbage, and even snatched trash picked up by children, which was hilarious). Hike to Camp No. 3. Camp No. 3: You can take a sightseeing car to Dongga Temple or pay 30 RMB to take the pink electric car to see the glacier tongue (Chengmen Cave) p9; Dongga Temple: p10 Choose to hike to Caohaizi, Caohaizi: On the way, you will pass through a primitive forest with few people and beautiful scenery. If lucky, you might see wild animals. I only saw pheasant footprints and a woodpecker. After reaching Caohaizi, you can take the shuttle bus back to the Visitor Center. The bus runs every half hour. 5. Fees: Entrance ticket 158 RMB/person, cable car 135 RMB/person. Second entry to the valley costs 40 RMB with ID (includes 10 RMB entrance ticket, 20 RMB round-trip sightseeing car ticket, and 10 RMB round-trip cable car ticket covering production and insurance fees). 6. The Visitor Center opens at 8 AM, and staff are on duty at each station p16. If you don’t want to hike and prefer to take the shuttle bus, wait at the station and ask the staff about the vehicle schedule.
