One thing that needs a lot of planning when you do self driving road trips in Hokkaido is which route you should take and how much the ETC costs. Taking toll roads can be very expensive in Hokkaido and thus, if you choose to take many toll roads during your trip, it would more cost effective if you buy the HEP Hokkaido Expressway Pass instead. For us, during our 8 days self drive trip, I used ChatGPT’s help to calculate the tolls and surprisingly, as we didn’t take many toll roads and also that some toll roads take the same time you will need to take if you use general roads and thus, there is no need to take toll roads to save up the money for another sushi feast. 🇯🇵 How much do I love Hokkaido? Well, I’ve visited three years in a row! I’m absolutely smitten. I usually go during winter, around mid-December, because I want to experience sub-zero temperatures and snow. Hokkaido is a province I highly recommend. It’s vast, with plenty of attractions. Accommodation is cheaper than in Tokyo, but flight tickets tend to be pricier. Let me share my reviews of the cities in Hokkaido that I’ve visited. - 📍In Sapporo, especially the Susukino area There are plenty of shopping spots, attractions, and restaurants. Honestly, just exploring the city is already delightful, especially when it’s snowing—it’s magical! The Susukino area is lively, with many late-night dining and drinking spots. Some places in Sapporo that I recommend include: 🌨️ Sapporo Clock Tower / Odori Park / Nijo Market (super fresh seafood!) / Tanukikoji Shopping Street / Sapporo TV Tower / Giant Ferris Wheel - 📍Shiroi Koibito Park - Shiroi Koibito Chocolate Factory Still in Sapporo, this theme park is styled as a chocolate factory. It’s a picturesque spot with many photo opportunities, designed in a European theme. You can watch the making of Shiroi Koibito cookies through glass windows. The treats are delicious, and the pudding is fantastic. There’s also a workshop for making sweets, but you’ll need to book in advance. - 📍Hill of Buddha Located in Makomanai Takino Cemetery, still in Sapporo. There’s a replica Moai statue here. Inside, there’s a café for a quick rest before you proceed to the large Buddha statue. If you visit during summer, it’s surrounded by lavender flowers. In winter, it’s blanketed in white snow. - 📍Jozankei Onsen A famous hot spring village in Hokkaido, located in Jozankei. It’s vast, beautiful, and surrounded by nature. There are foot bath zones and many photo spots. It feels like a mountain village. You can visit for a day trip or stay overnight at one of the hotels. Personally, I went for a day trip—took photos, soaked my feet in the onsen, strolled around a bit, and then headed back. - 📍Otaru Otaru is another favorite city of mine. It’s a romantic port city with a long walkway lined with restaurants and shops. It’s a great spot for photos. If you’ve seen the movie “Fan Day,” you’ll love following its trail here. It’s a chill, slow-paced city. Popular attractions include the Otaru Music Box Museum, Kitaichi Glass Factory, and Otaru Canal. - 📍Otaru Aquarium A small aquarium by the sea. Perfect for aquarium enthusiasts. There’s a penguin parade, dolphin shows, seal feeding shows, and more. Check the schedule for each show. The medium-sized fish tunnel and surrounding views are stunning. You won’t need much time to explore, but it’s definitely worth it. - 📍Christmas Tree in Biei and Mild Seven Hills The famous Christmas tree or the “Lonely Tree” in Biei is quite far from the city center. It’s best to visit during heavy snow for beautiful photos. Mild Seven Hills features rows of Kiramatsu pine trees, also in Biei. If you love photography, this is a must-visit. You can also drive around Biei to discover more scenic viewpoints. - 📍Ningle Terrace A fairy-tale village in Furano. It’s filled with handmade craft shops and charming knick-knacks. Located within the New Furano Prince Hotel, a famous ski resort in Furano. Visit in the evening when the lights are on—it’s truly magical and perfect for photography. Don’t forget to come during peak snow season! - 📍Hakodate My absolute favorite city in Hokkaido! It’s peaceful, beautiful, and by the sea. Here are some places I’ve visited: 🌨️ Daimon Yokocho, near JR Hakodate Station—a lively area with food stalls and izakaya. During my trip to Hakodate, I enjoyed plenty of delicious food! Among them, I highly recommend the sushi restaurant "Nemuro Hanamaru Conveyor Belt Sushi" located in Kiralis Hakodate. This restaurant is situated in the basement of the Kiralis building, right in front of JR Hakodate Station. When you arrive at the restaurant, you need to check in using the ticket machine. Note that it operates on a first-come, first-served basis on the day, as reservations are not accepted. First, we toasted with draft beer! We ordered sushi featuring ingredients unique to Hokkaido. - Hakodate specialty sujiko (salmon roe) - Red snow crab miso - Fatty herring - Seared flounder fin - Nemuro-produced cod roe wrapped in spicy cod roe - Salmon mefun gunkan The winner this time was the fatty herring! It had no unpleasant smell, and the tender flesh melted in the mouth. The mefun gunkan caught my attention with its unusual name, so I ordered it out of curiosity. It’s made from the kidney (sewata) located on the belly side of the backbone, salted and aged. "Tokyu Stay Hakodate Asaichi Akari no Yu" is conveniently located just a 4-minute walk from JR Hakodate Station. I stayed in a Standard Twin room, which came equipped with a washer-dryer and a mini kitchen. Additionally, there was a microwave and an IH cooking heater. The room had a window directly facing the sea, offering a stunning view! The side table with chairs was also very convenient and appreciated. The bathroom featured a bathtub and even a ReFa hair dryer. On the top floor of the hotel, there’s a hot spring bath ♡ It includes both indoor and open-air baths, and enjoying a morning soak while watching the sunrise was truly refreshing! On the lower floors, there’s a lounge where you can relax while enjoying free coffee and juice, with views of Mount Hakodate and the sea. During my trip to Hakodate, I stayed at a ryokan that was conveniently close to the airport. The staff provided excellent service, helping with my luggage and making the experience feel truly traditional. The room was a traditional tatami-style room, surprisingly spacious and clean. The view of the garden outside the window was incredibly refreshing, especially in the morning when I opened the curtains. I had the chance to try on a yukata, and the open-air bath was absolutely amazing. Since it was winter, the air was cold while the water was warm, which completely relieved my travel fatigue. It was quiet and peaceful as there weren’t many people around. I also added breakfast to my stay, allowing me to fully experience the ryokan tradition. It is recommended to try Hokkaido desserts or buy Hokkaido-exclusive souvenirs. Stop 4: Mount Hakodate Observation Deck The highlight is the Mount Hakodate observation deck. Take the cable car up the mountain and you can overlook the entire city of Hakodate along the way, plus the coastline scenery is excellent. On a sunny day, the city and the sea are lined up, and many postcards are taken here.
