Helsinki is the capital of Finland. The city is small but very atmospheric, strict, and minimalist. My family and I have visited here more than once. I want to share some places that are worth visiting if you are in Helsinki for one day (or during a layover) to get a fuller impression of the city. 🔸Senate Square. The heart of Helsinki. Located in the Kruununhaka district, this is a great starting point for exploring the city. ✔️You can hop on a double-decker Hop-on Hop-off bus at the square. The square features the Senate building, merchant houses, the University of Helsinki, St. Nicholas Cathedral, and a monument to Alexander II in the center. ✔️You can enter St. Nicholas Cathedral and listen to the organ. The square often hosts events such as fairs, concerts, and festivals. 🔸Market Square (Kauppatori). Located by the sea and operates year-round. Here, you can try national street food and buy souvenirs. ‼️Beware of large seagulls that might steal food right out of your hands! 📍Accessible by tram 2 and 2H, or bus 17. Stop: Kauppatori. 🔸Helsinki Central Railway Station. A unique building made of pink granite, adorned with majestic Atlantes holding large lanterns. 📍Kaivokatu, 1. 🔸Uspenski Cathedral. Situated on a high hill, it towers over the Katajanokka district. It is the largest church in Western and Northern Europe. 📍How to get there: Tram 4. Stop: Kauppiaankatu. 🔸Rock Church (Temppeliaukio Church). A unique structure with no analogs in the world. The church is built directly inside a granite rock. It is an active church where masses are held, and you can also buy tickets for organ concerts. 📍Luthergatan, 3. Accessible by trams 1 and 2 to the Sammonkatu stop. These are not all the attractions in Helsinki, but they will give you a fuller impression of the city. ✔️As souvenirs, you can bring back items featuring Moomin characters, licorice candies, and Fazer chocolate.

Recently, I visited the VALO Hotel & Work Helsinki. I liked the hotel and can recommend it, but there are a few nuances to consider when choosing it. ✔️ The hotel is located at: Helsinki, 109 Mannerheimintie 🔸 In my opinion, VALO Hotel is more suitable for those traveling for work or by car. 📍 The hotel is not close to the city center or metro; you need to take a bus to get to the center. The travel time is approximately 30 minutes. 📍 The reception desk operates 24/7. The staff speaks English. You can also check in independently, which is very convenient. ‼️ Upon check-in, you need to provide a European bank card or a deposit of 150 euros. Our Belarusian card was not accepted, so I recommend having cash just in case. ✔️ Free internet is available throughout the hotel. There are many comfortable spots for work or meetings. ✔️ For an additional fee, you can visit the spa center (sauna, pool, jacuzzi). 🔸 The room is small but has everything you need. It's clean, and the mattresses and pillows are comfortable. 🔸 Breakfast is buffet-style, diverse, and filling. If I travel for work again, I will likely stay here again.

🗓️Friday, September 19, 2025, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM 📍Löyly Helsinki Sauna Fee: ¥4,642 (€26) / 2 hours I went to Löyly Helsinki, a popular sauna in Helsinki. I made a reservation in advance through the official website. The fee includes towel and locker use. The exterior has a modern and stylish atmosphere. The facility is divided into a restaurant and sauna area. I thought there were only two saunas, but on the day I visited, they also had a private sauna available, so I was able to use a total of four. Instead of a cold bath, I jumped into the Baltic Sea, which is an experience you don't often get in Japan, and it was really fun. I'd never been to a proper sauna before, so I thought I could stay for two hours, but when I actually went, the two hours flew by and I wished I'd stayed longer. After leaving the sauna, I went to Löyly Helsinki for dinner. I tried to enter the restaurant, but it was fully booked. They told me to sit wherever I wanted at the bar and order at the counter, so I ended up having a hamburger from the bar menu. So, if you'd like to eat at the restaurant, I recommend making a reservation for the sauna as well. The hamburger I ordered was absolutely delicious! The accompanying fries were quite salty (though other Nordic places tend to be quite salty as well), but the portion was huge. The white church at Senate Square is illuminated by lights, with snowflakes forming delicate patterns on the dome and eaves, harmonizing beautifully with the faint glow of the distant Ferris wheel. On the "snow hill" roof of the Amos Rex Museum, people skate back and forth, their laughter creating tiny sparks of warmth in the crisp air. On the frozen surface of the Baltic Sea, moonlight spreads like a silver ribbon. A cruise ship quietly anchors in the snowy mist, like a dream waiting to set sail. On the ice-covered lake, small boats shimmer under the moonlight, while wooden houses and lighthouses on distant islands glow warmly in the twilight, like embers in a fireplace. Flying from Hong Kong to Paris with Finnair, landing in Helsinki in the morning, with an 8-hour layover. Watch how I enjoy a full tour of this Nordic capital! ✈️ Entry After getting off the plane, don’t go to Transfer; go straight to Arrival for immigration. Non-EU travelers use the foreign passport lane, which is almost empty with no queues. They will check your Schengen visa and may ask for your onward ticket and hotel booking. Smooth entry into Finland! 🚉 How to Get to the City Center Follow the signs to the Railway Station and take the long escalator downstairs to the airport train station. Use the blue ticket machine to select zones ABC, buy a one-way ticket for €4 or a day pass for €12. The train runs in a loop, and you can board from either platform. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the Central Railway Station. Didn’t have time to see the exhibitions this time, but will definitely visit next time. 4️⃣ Old Market Hall The place to eat. Opens at 8 am, but many stalls start business around 10–11 am. I ordered a bowl of creamy salmon soup (€13.5) at The Seafood Bar on the left side after entering. Super fresh and warming! 5️⃣ Academic Bookstore Designed by Nordic architect Alvar Aalto, with a glass skylight resembling diamond facets. The Café Aalto on the second floor is also worth a visit, with furniture designed by him and a great atmosphere. 6️⃣ Amos Rex Art Museum & Lasipalatsi Square Alien-like design, sci-fi yet retro. The wavy rooftop plaza looks like “eyes” gazing up at Helsinki’s sky. I bought fridge magnets and a necklace here. · Moomin Shop Esplanadi A huge Moomin specialty store opposite the Academic Bookstore, a must-visit for fans. · STOCKMANN A well-known Finnish department store, rumored to have the lowest LV prices worldwide after tax refund, with Chinese-speaking staff available.

Here, in the center of Senate Square, in the Kruununhaka district, stands the main church of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation of Finland. It's the home church of the local parishioners—both in spirit and architecture. For some, it's a place of religious peace, for others, an aesthetic pleasure, and for still others, the perfect backdrop for photographs. So, if you're ever in Helsinki, stop by. It's worth sitting on the cold stone steps and feeling part of this century-old breath before it dissolves in the bustle of the city. 📸 Architectural photography is another of my favorite disciplines. Since I was only planning to stay at a hotel this time, I narrowed down my search based on convenient location, affordability, and bathroom facilities (cleanliness, water-resistant floors, etc.). Single beds in Scandinavia are all narrow. lol All my reservations were room-only. (The hotel in Stockholm included free breakfast.) 🏨 Scandic Helsinki Aviacongress 📍Vantaa, Finland🇫🇮 (Around Helsinki Airport) Since my first day's plan was to arrive in Helsinki and visit the sauna I had reserved, and I was leaving for Copenhagen early the next morning, I found a hotel near the airport and stayed here. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to and from the airport, running from early in the morning. Although it's far from downtown Helsinki, there's a bus stop near the hotel, which I used to get to the city. The room was clean and spacious. The price was reasonable, so I recommend it to anyone with a similar schedule. 🏨 Copenhagen Island Hotel 📍Copenhagen, Denmark🇩🇰 Hotel prices in Copenhagen were generally higher than in other cities, perhaps because it was a Saturday or perhaps just because. I planned to take the bus to Stockholm the next day, so I chose this hotel, which was nearby the bus terminal and reasonably priced. The hotel was close to the station and bus stop, and it was only one stop to Central Station, so travel was easy. I only passed through it on my way to the station because I didn't have much time, but there's a shopping mall next to the hotel. The room was clean and tidy. 🏨 Queen's Hotel by First Hotels 📍Stockholm, Sweden🇸🇪 I searched for a budget hotel close to Stockholm Central Station. I was a little worried because it seemed a bit far to walk from the station and the hotel seemed a little old, but I booked it anyway, thinking it would be fine since I was only staying there for one night. As it turned out, it was perfectly within walking distance even with a carry-on bag, and the roads weren't too bumpy, so I got around without any issues. The room was simple but clean, with plenty of space to spread out my luggage. The elevator was an old-fashioned manual elevator, which added to the European feel. I also appreciated the free breakfast included. 🏨 Ivalo River Camping 📍Ivalo, Finland🇫🇮 During my three-day aurora viewing trip, I wanted to stay at an aurora hut on the last day, so I wanted to keep costs as low as possible for the first two nights. I chose this hotel because it had good reviews. I'd never stayed in a cottage before, and I was a little worried about what the shared facilities would be like, since the toilets and showers were outside the cottage. However, they were very well maintained and I had no problems using them. As noted on the reservation page, bed linens and towels are charged separately from the accommodation fee, so be aware of that. (€12/person - pricey!) There's also a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer, so I was able to do my laundry. (€15/3 hours - I brought my own, so I didn't use it, but detergent and other items were available.) Unfortunately, the weather was bad the night I stayed, and I couldn't see the aurora, but there was a river across the road in front, and I was able to relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset. 🏨 Holiday Village Inari 📍Inari, Finland🇫🇮 I booked this Aurora Hut, which I'd always wanted to stay at. The rooms face Lake Inari, are spacious, and have a luxurious atmosphere. There are also supermarkets and souvenir shops nearby. The room was fully stocked with cutlery and other amenities, which was convenient when eating food from the supermarket. I needed to call the staff to confirm something about a tour I'd booked personally, and they were very accommodating. Our aurora tour the day before was canceled and we had to reschedule our stay here, so we didn't have much time to relax in our room. However, when we returned from the aurora tour, the aurora was in full bloom, and we were able to see it from our room. It was truly a dreamlike experience! 🥹🤍 🏨 Scandic Simonkenttä 📍Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮 It's located right behind Kamppi Chapel. It's directly connected to Kamppi Station, but you can also walk to Helsinki Central Station. The tram stops right in front of the hotel, so it was convenient for getting to the ferry terminal in one go when going to Tallinn. Kamppi Station is home to Kamppi Center, a large shopping mall with a Marimekko store and a supermarket. The supermarket was open fairly late, which was helpful since I was short on time. There is also a 24-hour supermarket closer to the central station. The hotel is in a great location, making it easy to get to anywhere, so I highly recommend it for sightseeing in Helsinki. This spot is very central in Helsinki and has beautiful architecture! Take some time to take it all in. Then, move up the stairs and step inside the iconic Helsinki Cathedral – it has a minimalistic, Scandinavian design and I loved it. Snap some pics; this place is aesthetic. Next, stroll over to the Uspenski Cathedral, the Russian church with all the dramatic domes. The architecture really stands out from the rest of the city. Worth a visit! I went to a restaurant called "maritori" in Helsinki, Finland! It's a staff cafeteria and cafe located inside the Marimekko headquarters building. The interior and space are so lovely that it's hard to believe it's a staff cafeteria, and we had a stylish lunch there!! Even non-staff members are welcome to enter during opening hours! Everything except the main course is buffet-style, and you can have seconds, but the main course was quite filling!! I stayed at 'Hotel Helka' located in Helsinki, Finland. It's about a 15-minute walk from Helsinki Central Station. The room was simple, compact, and very comfortable! The bathroom was clean, and the interior design was absolutely adorable 💕 Breakfast was served buffet-style, and I loaded up my plate with lots of delicious food. It was so tasty that I even went back for seconds, adding fruits and nuts to my yogurt! This hotel offers a great selection of pastries and bread, making breakfast something to look forward to every day. If you're staying in Helsinki, I highly recommend this hotel!
