Where are peonies most passionately blooming? The answer must be—Pengzhou
Spring in Chengdu is stunningly beautiful, with a dazzling array of flowers blooming everywhere. At the end of March, you can go see the peonies, which hold special significance in China. If you ask a Chengdu local, "Where are peonies most passionately blooming?" the answer will definitely be—Pengzhou.
Peonies in Pengzhou are now in full bloom across the city. As a peony destination on par with Luoyang and Heze, Pengzhou is renowned as "Tianpeng Peonies are the best in the world." It is one of China’s three major peony festivals and a benchmark of southern peony culture.
Pengzhou’s peony history is very long. As early as the Tang Dynasty, peonies were already being cultivated here. By the Southern Song Dynasty, it had reached its peak, becoming the core peony production area in Sichuan.
The great poet Lu You visited Pengzhou to admire the peonies and wrote, "Tianpeng is the hometown of flowers; compared to Luoyang’s flowers, Tianpeng’s color and fragrance are somewhat diminished," and he recorded detailed varieties of peonies.
In Lu You’s eyes, "In Central China, Luoyang is first for peonies; in Shu (Sichuan), Tianpeng is first."
Tianpeng peonies are "of the highest quality, the best in Shu." Every blooming season, people come to admire the flowers, creating a lively and bustling scene. This elegant tradition of loving and appreciating flowers has been passed down through generations in Pengzhou and continues to this day.
DanJing Mountain
Chengdu has two DanJing Mountains, one located in Longquan Mountain and the other in Pengzhou. Pengzhou’s DanJing Mountain is famed as the "Dan Yue Dai Zong" and an "Ancient Tang Dynasty Scenic Spot." It is the birthplace of Tianpeng peonies and an excellent place to enjoy spring blossoms. Upon entering the scenic area, you are surrounded by vast fields of peonies—not just a few, but a sea of peony flowers.
The peonies on DanJing Mountain grow naturally along the mountain terrain, flourishing wildly between rock crevices and under ancient pines and cypresses, carrying a touch of wild vitality and rustic charm. The cliffside peonies are a unique feature of DanJing Mountain, with flower branches hanging down like waterfalls, flowers layered and cascading down the cliffs in reds like clouds, pinks like makeup, whites like snow, and purples with regal elegance.
Walking slowly along the mountain trails, you will find twelve major viewing gardens featuring famous varieties such as Zhuangyuan Red, Drunken Xi Shi, Golden Waist Tower, and Pengzhou Purple. The flowers are large and full, with petals layered like brocade. A gentle breeze carries a rich fragrance that refreshes the soul.
DanJing Mountain’s peony cultivation history spans over a thousand years, with more than 3 million peony plants covering the entire mountain, making it a large-scale site. Climbing to the top at Jinhua Temple, you can overlook the mountains where the sea of peonies blends with green hills and ancient temples, offering a broad view and a clear mind, allowing you to experience the majestic grandeur of "Only the peony is truly the national beauty, its blooming season moves the capital."

Longxing Temple, located in the center of Pengzhou city, has been planting peonies since the Tang Dynasty. Every spring, about a quarter of the temple grounds are covered with peonies. The temple features viewing areas such as Tianpeng, Tianxiang, and DanJing, mainly showcasing native Pengzhou peonies, with nearly 10,000 plants and over 500 varieties.
There are 15 rare peonies over 100 years old, including the oldest planted during the Ming Wanli period (1616), with a tree age of 409 years; also a 310-year-old "Flower King," precious purple-spotted peonies, and more.
Longxing Temple is majestic and solemn, with incense smoke curling upward. The peonies alongside the 81-meter-high Longxing Temple Reliquary Pagoda form an iconic traditional Chinese scene and have become a popular photo spot. The peonies, ancient buildings, archways, and yellow walls complement each other, showcasing prosperity. Viewing them here feels like the ultimate expression of Chinese aesthetic romance.

Tianpeng Peony Base covers an area of over 100 acres and serves as the living gene bank for Tianpeng peonies. It holds the complete "family tree" of Tianpeng peonies, with over 600 varieties and nearly 100,000 plants, covering nine major color series and ten flower types. It includes 19 traditional Tianpeng famous varieties such as Pengzhou Purple, Golden Waist Tower, Yulouzi, and Oubi; as well as rare protected varieties like purple-spotted peonies and Sichuan peonies. The rare green peony "Chunliu" can also be seen here, along with collections of century-old ancient peonies.
Standing in the sea of peonies, you see pale purple, pink-white, bright red, golden yellow... all colors swaying gracefully in the spring breeze.
Besides peonies, there are also large areas of paeonies. As the saying goes, peonies are the king, and paeonies are the minister, so you can enjoy both flowers together, which is quite interesting.

The above three locations are popular spots for peony viewing, but springtime in Pengzhou is not limited to these. Peonies bloom in many places, including the 1961 Park with a vintage train, the Peony Paradise Pengzhou Garden in the city center, the Peony Kingdom Baibiao Peony Garden in the suburbs, and the high mountain peony secret realm Qingliang Temple, making Pengzhou a city where peonies bloom everywhere.
The best viewing period for a single peony plant is about 10 days, but by combining early, mid, and late blooming varieties, the entire viewing season can be extended to about a month, with peak bloom from late March to mid-April.
Every year during the peony bloom, Pengzhou hosts various cultural and entertainment activities to attract visitors from all directions. Pengzhou’s peonies are not only flowers but also cultural symbols and spiritual emblems of the city.
Pengzhou peonies have both a majestic and noble posture and a simple, natural charm, quietly blooming with their unique elegance amid green mountains and clear waters.
Unlike Central Plains peonies, the greatest feature of Tianpeng peonies is their "wild and elegant beauty" and "large flowers reaching a foot in diameter."
Suddenly recalling a poem Lu You wrote in his later years: "Often remember sending peonies in Pengzhou, auspicious clouds shine on the golden plate." More than 800 years later, the magnificent scene described by the ancients has not faded but flourished even more. Tianpeng peonies are definitely worth a visit!
