🗓️2025/09/20 (Saturday) 📍Frederiksborg Slot (Frederiksborg Castle) Duration: Approximately 2 hours 🎫 Using the Copenhagen Card I visited Frederiksborg Castle, located in Hillerød, about an hour away from Copenhagen Central Station. I hadn't heard of this castle until I saw it in a guidebook, but it turned out to be a stunning spot with luxurious interiors and beautiful gardens. I highly recommend it as a sightseeing destination for anyone visiting Copenhagen! Frederiksborg Castle is built on an island in the middle of a lake and now serves as the National History Museum. One of the highlights of the castle is the church inside, but unfortunately, I couldn't explore it as there was a wedding taking place on the day of my visit 🥲 Such a shame. As for the gardens, you can access them from the side without entering the castle. Many locals seemed to be enjoying a relaxed time by the lakeside, and the peaceful and leisurely atmosphere was truly charming 🌿 I spent about 2 hours there, taking my time at first and then speeding up towards the end. I think 3 hours would be the perfect amount of time to fully enjoy the experience.

This page shares the actual itinerary I used in Copenhagen on the second and third days. Since I only stayed in Copenhagen for two days, I bought a 48-hour Copenhagen Card and explored a lot! The card included admission fees and transportation to various attractions, and I was able to use it to visit Frederiksborg Castle and the Louisiana Museum of Art, which are a little further away. It was very convenient, not requiring me to buy tickets each time, and the unlimited transportation option meant I could just hop on and off without worrying about the cost. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to see a lot! I was able to see most of the tourist spots in two days, but I regretted not having enough time to shop despite the many shops I wanted to see. Copenhagen became such a favorite of mine that I want to return immediately. 🥹🇩🇰 I wish I could have stayed at least one more day! I've also included approximate times to the extent I know them. Frederiksborg Castle (Frederiksborg Slot), also affectionately known as the Crystal Palace, is situated in Hillerød, Denmark. From Copenhagen, you can easily hop on the S-train (S-tog) Line E and ride it to the terminus, Hillerød Station. The train journey takes around 40 minutes, followed by a breezy 15-minute walk. A one-way ticket costs about 65 DKK, while the castle's entrance fee is 125 DKK. Often hailed as the "Versailles of Denmark," Frederiksborg Castle was originally constructed as a private manor in 1560. To win the heart of Queen Sophie, King Frederik II of Denmark traded a forest monastery with the estate's owner to acquire the property. Following Frederik II's passing, his son, King Christian IV, took the throne and spent two decades extensively renovating the castle, transforming it into a stunning masterpiece of Dutch Renaissance architecture. Fast forward to 1882, the castle opened its doors to the public as a national museum. During my visit, the sky was looking a bit gloomy. Although the castle gardens are truly spectacular, I decided to pivot my strategy and spend more time exploring indoors. The entrance hall immediately sets the tone with its unique charm—the combination of antlers from past hunts and intricate wall reliefs is simply stunning! I then wandered through various rooms, each boasting its own distinct character. The tour is thoughtfully curated, guiding visitors from the oldest rooms (dating back to around the 14th century) progressively toward the more modern chambers—though even the "modern" rooms are centuries old. One of my absolute favorite spots is The Chapel. It impeccably preserves its lavish early 17th-century Baroque decor. The gleaming, opulent design exudes a profound sense of solemnity and grandeur. Historically, this magnificent chapel served as the coronation site for Danish kings. Another highlight for me was the Queen's Corridor. The elegant white carvings on the ceiling seamlessly complementing the exquisite wall decorations perfectly capture the unique flair of ancient Denmark. Rumor has it that the fortress houses over 60 rooms, with around 40 currently open to the public—offering a dazzling visual feast that is truly hard to take in all at once.

Such an easy way to explore Copenhagen. ⛪ Best viewpoint: Church of Our Saviour — If you have the CPH Card, I’d choose this over waiting more than an hour for the lift at Christiansborg Tower 😂 🏛️ More places I visited: Christiansborg Palace, Frederiksborg Slot, Grundtvig's Church, Experimentarium, Carlsberg Byen & Home of Carlsberg. 💳 My CPH Card tip: It was really useful for this trip as many attractions and transport were included. If you have an extra day in Copenhagen, Frederiksborg Slot is definitely worth the trip. Located in Hillerød, this stunning Renaissance castle looks like something straight out of a fairytale. 🏰✨ Surrounded by a lake and beautiful gardens, the exterior alone is already impressive — but the inside is where the real surprise begins. The rooms are filled with incredible details, from grand halls and elaborate decorations to historic paintings and royal collections. It feels much more like a traditional European royal castle compared with the more modern feel of Christiansborg Palace. 🌿 Don't miss the gardens! After exploring the castle, take some time to walk around the formal Baroque gardens. The view looking back towards the castle is especially beautiful and makes for some great photos 📸. 💡 My tip: Allow at least 2–3 hours for the castle, gardens and surrounding area. Currently, the castle also houses the Danish National History Museum, founded in 1878 by J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg Brewery. The museum holds royal treasures spanning 500 years of Danish history. Due to limited time, we only viewed the exterior. The castle’s Baroque garden is not only beautiful but also large in scale, making it worth a visit. The castle embodies architectural and artistic achievements and is a symbol of Danish national identity and cultural pride, attracting many visitors from around the world every year.

Each corner of the castle reflects the Danish rich history. It has 82 rooms and dinning halls and chapel, each one unique and tastefully decorated. Each room tells a story! Carry headphones as they don’t provide that for the audio guide. The garden behind is equally mesmerising, carry a picnic mat if want to rest and enjoy the scenery for a while.
