This trip was another unforgettable experience as I visited Hokkaido, Japan, during the winter season when snow was falling. From the moment I stepped out of the airport, the cold air immediately embraced me. The temperature was slightly below freezing, yet it felt refreshing. The white snow blanketed everything—rooftops, roads, trees, and mountains—making the entire city look like it came straight out of a postcard. During my visit, it snowed almost every day. Sometimes it was a light snowfall with tiny flakes gently drifting down, while other times it was heavy, creating a white curtain. Walking amidst the snow was an incredible feeling. The surroundings became quieter, leaving only the sound of footsteps crunching on the snow, evoking a sense of peace and indescribable romance. The various locations in Hokkaido were especially beautiful during the snowy season, whether it was Sapporo, Otaru, or the small surrounding villages. The European-Japanese-style buildings, covered in snow, looked even more classic. The nighttime lights reflecting off the snow created a warm and enchanting atmosphere. One of my favorite moments was strolling in the evening amidst the freezing cold. My hands were cold, but my heart felt warm. Sipping a hot drink while watching the snow fall in front of me was a feeling that no photograph could fully capture. You have to see it with your own eyes to truly understand. Although traveling during the snowy season requires some preparation—such as warm clothing, anti-slip shoes, and winter gear—experiencing the real atmosphere made it all worthwhile. Winter in Hokkaido is not just about its beauty; it also offers a sense of tranquility, warmth, and romance that is unmatched elsewhere. Overall, visiting Hokkaido during the snowy season is an experience everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. Crab General is a famous crab cuisine specialty restaurant in Sapporo, and almost every tourist makes a pilgrimage here. Even if you don't dine inside, you'll want to snap a photo at the entrance. The restaurant specializes in various crab dishes, including king crab, hairy crab, and snow crab. You can choose from set menus or à la carte options. Crab sashimi, charcoal-grilled crab, hot pot, tempura—having a full course meal here is truly satisfying. The prices aren't cheap, but when you're in Hokkaido, indulging in crab is a must, so it's worth splurging once in a while. If you visit on a winter evening, the snow piled up at the entrance paired with the glowing giant crab creates a quintessential Sapporo vibe. The limited sightseeing opportunities each day were due to difficult transportation. 📌 Anyone planning a trip during winter should have a backup plan because transportation might be poor or impossible. In early December in Hokkaido, the south and Sapporo don’t have thick snow yet. If you want to chase snow, you must go to the northern areas of Biei and Asahikawa! Here’s our itinerary. Since dinner is reserved at 5:30 pm, we started early! 6:29 am Depart from Sapporo 🚄: Take the JR (Lilac-Kamui Line): Platform 9, seats 5 and 6 are non-reserved 7:56 am Arrive at Asahikawa Station Asahikawa Station is huge and connected to the AEON shopping mall. Take advantage of the morning snow to visit Miyamae Park, which is right behind Asahikawa Station. 8:44 am Depart Asahikawa for Biei 🚄: Take the JR (Furano Line): Platform 1, all non-reserved seats 9:17 am Arrive at Biei From Biei to Shirahige Falls and Blue Pond, you can take bus routes 39 and 42, which take about 20 minutes. The bus stop is a 2-minute walk outside Biei Station: search for Biei Eki-mae (in front of the bank). Route 39’s final stop is Asahikawa, and route 42’s final stop is Biei.
