The prices here are reasonable, and the city is full of vibrant local life. It has both the rich history of Hezhen fishing and hunting and the most authentic Northeast flavors in the old city streets. I've put together a personally tested 2-day itinerary for sightseeing and eating to help you experience the real Jiamusi. Accommodation: Near Jiamusi Station (about 4 km from Riverside Park) or near Riverside Park. Day 1: Cultural river views + night market vibes. Tiexi Morning Market (Chang'an Morning Market), 5:00 AM–10:30 AM. The most popular morning market in Jiamusi. Must-eats: Tofu pudding, fried cakes, lamb soup, sticky rice cakes, etc. Immerse yourself in a Northeast morning. Lunch: Find a cold noodle restaurant for mixed cold noodles + old-school sweet and sour pork (guobaorou). Afternoon: Riverside Park Citywalk (free). Route: Zhiqing Square → 10th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC Monument → Songhua River Beach Trail, wait for the sunset by the river. Dinner: Northeast barbecue, try grilled flatbread with skewers and hot pot tripe, paired with local Jiafeng beer. Day 2: Museums and night market. Riverside (Jinjiang) Morning Market, a more authentic morning market for locals, 5:00 AM–8:30 AM. Actually, stalls start setting up around 3:00 AM. Many vendors leave by 8:30 AM, and it's basically empty by 9:00 AM. It specializes in river fresh food and wild mountain vegetables, with a more primitive atmosphere. So, be sure to go early. Various Northeast breakfasts (freshly fried dough sticks, oil cakes, tofu pudding, corn). If you can't get up early, consider the Chunguang Morning Market not far from the train station, which is also good and stays open later. Morning: Jiamusi Museum (free entry with ID card). Highlights: Hezhen fish-skin artifacts, history of land reclamation on the Sanjiang Plain, and historical materials of the Anti-Japanese United Army. Duration: 1.5 hours. Former Site of the Hejiang Provincial Government Museum: Known as the "Little Yan'an of the Northeast," the old buildings are full of retro charm. Advance reservation required. Evening: Youfang Hutong Food Street (best atmosphere when lights come on in the evening), various snacks like Jiamusi grilled cold noodles, fried skewers, and old-school spicy hot pot. Must-eat food in Jiamusi: 1. Specialty staples: Jiamusi mixed cold noodles (hidden way to eat: mixed noodles + mixed vegetables + beef soup), freshly pressed hot cold noodles, tendon pancakes rolled with skewers. 2. Hearty dishes: Iron-pot stewed river fish, old-school sweet and sour pork (guobaorou), braised pork bones, Hezhen smoked fish (Talaha), and "pig slaughter" stew (shazhucai). 3. If you stay longer, you can also go to the Sifeng Mountain Scenic Area in the suburbs (near the city, 20 minutes by taxi). It features a reservoir loop trail and the Jade Buddha Temple. Climbing up offers a panoramic view of Jiamusi. It's quiet, uncrowded, free to enter, and takes about 3 hours to explore. Don't just pass through Jiamusi in a hurry; slow down to feel the unique vibrancy and gentleness of this river city. Next stop, head to Fuyuan and continue east.
