2026 Inari Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in January)

🗓️September 19, 2025 - September 29, 2025 I traveled to six cities in four countries over 11 days and nine nights! Since I was only planning to stay at a hotel this time, I narrowed down my search based on convenient location, affordability, and bathroom facilities (cleanliness, water-resistant floors, etc.). Single beds in Scandinavia are all narrow. lol All my reservations were room-only. (The hotel in Stockholm included free breakfast.) 🏨 Scandic Helsinki Aviacongress 📍Vantaa, Finland🇫🇮 (Around Helsinki Airport) Since my first day's plan was to arrive in Helsinki and visit the sauna I had reserved, and I was leaving for Copenhagen early the next morning, I found a hotel near the airport and stayed here. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to and from the airport, running from early in the morning. Although it's far from downtown Helsinki, there's a bus stop near the hotel, which I used to get to the city. The room was clean and spacious. The price was reasonable, so I recommend it to anyone with a similar schedule. 🏨 Copenhagen Island Hotel 📍Copenhagen, Denmark🇩🇰 Hotel prices in Copenhagen were generally higher than in other cities, perhaps because it was a Saturday or perhaps just because. I planned to take the bus to Stockholm the next day, so I chose this hotel, which was nearby the bus terminal and reasonably priced. The hotel was close to the station and bus stop, and it was only one stop to Central Station, so travel was easy. I only passed through it on my way to the station because I didn't have much time, but there's a shopping mall next to the hotel. The room was clean and tidy. 🏨 Queen's Hotel by First Hotels 📍Stockholm, Sweden🇸🇪 I searched for a budget hotel close to Stockholm Central Station. I was a little worried because it seemed a bit far to walk from the station and the hotel seemed a little old, but I booked it anyway, thinking it would be fine since I was only staying there for one night. As it turned out, it was perfectly within walking distance even with a carry-on bag, and the roads weren't too bumpy, so I got around without any issues. The room was simple but clean, with plenty of space to spread out my luggage. The elevator was an old-fashioned manual elevator, which added to the European feel. I also appreciated the free breakfast included. 🏨 Ivalo River Camping 📍Ivalo, Finland🇫🇮 During my three-day aurora viewing trip, I wanted to stay at an aurora hut on the last day, so I wanted to keep costs as low as possible for the first two nights. I chose this hotel because it had good reviews. I'd never stayed in a cottage before, and I was a little worried about what the shared facilities would be like, since the toilets and showers were outside the cottage. However, they were very well maintained and I had no problems using them. As noted on the reservation page, bed linens and towels are charged separately from the accommodation fee, so be aware of that. (€12/person - pricey!) There's also a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer, so I was able to do my laundry. (€15/3 hours - I brought my own, so I didn't use it, but detergent and other items were available.) Unfortunately, the weather was bad the night I stayed, and I couldn't see the aurora, but there was a river across the road in front, and I was able to relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset. 🏨 Holiday Village Inari 📍Inari, Finland🇫🇮 I booked this Aurora Hut, which I'd always wanted to stay at. The rooms face Lake Inari, are spacious, and have a luxurious atmosphere. There are also supermarkets and souvenir shops nearby. The room was fully stocked with cutlery and other amenities, which was convenient when eating food from the supermarket. I needed to call the staff to confirm something about a tour I'd booked personally, and they were very accommodating. Our aurora tour the day before was canceled and we had to reschedule our stay here, so we didn't have much time to relax in our room. However, when we returned from the aurora tour, the aurora was in full bloom, and we were able to see it from our room. It was truly a dreamlike experience! 🥹🤍 🏨 Scandic Simonkenttä 📍Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮 It's located right behind Kamppi Chapel. It's directly connected to Kamppi Station, but you can also walk to Helsinki Central Station. The tram stops right in front of the hotel, so it was convenient for getting to the ferry terminal in one go when going to Tallinn. Kamppi Station is home to Kamppi Center, a large shopping mall with a Marimekko store and a supermarket. The supermarket was open fairly late, which was helpful since I was short on time. There is also a 24-hour supermarket closer to the central station. The hotel is in a great location, making it easy to get to anywhere, so I highly recommend it for sightseeing in Helsinki. | Let me share my experience of successfully chasing the aurora! I saw the aurora four times in Lapland on December 4, 5, 8, and 9, 2024. I was so lucky! I took some amazing photos, and I'll share a guide on how to take photos of the aurora later. 📍🌈Location & Time: ⚡12.4 (Aurora Tour) Saariselka-Inari, north of Nellim. I understand this place is a secret base for local aurora tours. ⚡12.4-12.5 Early Morning Northern Light Village, Saariselka. We stayed in an aurora cabin, and we saw the aurora in the resort. ⚡12.8 Northern Light Ranch, Levi. A travel resort in the same series as the previous glass cabin. We played at the husky farm during the day, and when we received an aurora alert at night, we went straight there, away from the light pollution in Levi. ⚡12.9 Near Levi Design Hotel. We also received an alert at night. But since we saw the aurora late yesterday, we didn't go out and saw the aurora with the naked eye in the dark woods near the hotel. 🈯The aurora apps we used are -Northern Lights Alert (black and green) -Aurora (black and purple) But‼️these apps are not visible to the naked eye. We frequently saw the aurora this week, and there are some commonalities. 1️⃣-You can see many stars on a clear day. 2️⃣-The sun must be completely set during the polar night. Go out after 8 pm. 3️⃣-Stay away from light sources such as houses and roads, 5-10 km is enough. The resorts in Lapland, Finland, are small towns and resorts with no skyscrapers. 4️⃣-The aurora appeared in the northern sky on these four days. Special Note⚡📳On December 4, the first day, the aurora app did not alert us. The hotel staff was also not optimistic. The weather forecast was cloudy, but there were many stars in the sky in Saariselka that day! 👉Since we had no experience and were afraid we wouldn't have another chance, we signed up for a €149 aurora tour at 5 pm. We were very lucky. When we gathered at 7:45 pm, there was already a faint green light over the hotel resort, and there were many stars in the sky! So we sped up and went north with the group. SO, the weather is clear, the direction is north, and the aurora is north of the Arctic Circle. Then wait for a grand magnetic storm!

This is a place you just won’t find accidentally. Literally in the middle of nowhere in Inari community, Finnish Lapland there’s a church that’s not located near any main roads and it’s completely inaccessible without hiking a few kilometers. Pielpajarvi used to be a winter village for the people of Inari where they used to gather for markets and listening to religious ceremonies. Anyway there was never any real village with people living there, people used to come there when the lake was frozen and hence the church and the surroundings were more easily accessible. The first church in that location was built already 1646-1648 but it was rotten and hence destroyed. The current church was built to the site and was finished 1760. The church used to be in regular use until late 19th century when it was replaced by a new church that was built near the habitation. But the wilderness Church is still occasionally in use, every year there’s a Midsummer ceremony and some couples can also use the church for their weddings. The church is located about 10 km north from the village of Inari. The address to the parking where the hiking route to the church starts is Sarviniementie 249, Inari. The Advantage: Inari’s extreme northern latitude provides the best possible odds, as lights are often visible even during moderate solar activity (Kp-Index 4+). The immense, frozen Lake Inari (Inarijärvi) provides an unparalleled, zero-light-pollution viewing platform. The Night on the Ice: On a crisp, -18°C night, I walked far out onto the silent, snow-covered ice, escaping all shore lights. The stillness was absolute, with only the intense, crackling stars overhead. The Show: Around 10:30 PM, a pale green streak appeared, rapidly intensifying into a vibrant green arc. This quickly transformed into dynamic curtains and rays that gracefully swayed across the sky. The light was amplified by the vast white expanse of the frozen lake, making the entire experience immersive. Sporadic flashes of pink and yellow added drama to the main green glow before the display slowly faded after over an hour. Tip: Utilize Lake Inari for its unobstructed views and aim for March or September for historically good solar activity. Respect the quiet, wild nature of this Sámi region.

Wilderness Hotel Inari🏨 I heard that 2025 would be a good year for aurora viewing, so I headed to Inari, Finland. The aurora against the snowy landscape is very Finnish and captivating, but since I grew up in a tropical country and can't stand the cold, I planned an aurora trip in mid-September, enjoying the autumn scenery. Instead of going on an aurora tour, I searched for places to see it from my hotel room. We decided on Inari because we could see the aurora right in front of Lake Inari, and if we were lucky, we could even see the upside-down aurora reflected on the lake. As a group of three adult women, we stayed in a lodge with a sauna instead of an aurora cabin. This was a real hit, with a spacious room, a sauna, and a fireplace, allowing us to fully enjoy the Finnish atmosphere. We stayed two nights, but the first day was cloudy and we couldn't see the aurora. The second day began with a starry sky and over two hours of aurora coverage that filled Lake Inari. It got cold halfway through, so I went back to my room, but I could still see the aurora clearly from the large window, and I was able to enjoy a lifetime's worth of aurora. The hotel breakfast was delicious, and even though I checked out at 7am, they prepared a breakfast box for me, and the staff were very hospitable. A more straightforward term is "glass room." 🍀 When we went to Finland, we stayed in some very unique rooms in the Lapland region. To be honest, we still have a long way to go in developing our own ice and snow industry. 📍 There are many beautiful igloos and cabins in Rovaniemi, Saariselkä, and Inari. They all have unique shapes. 🌟 Forest cabins - chalet 🌟 Mobile mini igloos - cabin Make sure to check carefully when booking a room. 🩵 Saariselkä 📍 We visited the popular Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Saariselkä, but the rooms felt a bit small, less than 20 m², which was quite cramped. 📍 Not far away is Northern Light Village, which has newer facilities and rooms twice the size, offering great value for money. So we ended up booking Northern Light Village. 🩵 Inari 👉 In Inari, we stayed in a cabin, which was much better than the igloos. 🩵 Levi ❄ The glass igloos in Levi are cube-shaped, with a square design. The one-way mirror glass exterior walls are very stylish. 🍀 From the outside, they look like mirrors reflecting the forest, but from the inside, you can see everything outside, which is very wild. 🩵 Booking Tips ☕ Most of the glass igloos in Saariselkä include breakfast and dinner, which is convenient. The glass igloos in Levi only include breakfast, but the room rates in Levi are half the price. 🛷 The glass igloo hotels in Saariselkä, Inari, and Levi all offer aurora tours and husky sledding activities. 💰 There are also many glass igloos in Rovaniemi, but they are the most expensive. Considering that the main goal of this trip was to see the aurora, not to stay in a glass igloo, we chose to experience the glass igloos further north. 🛀 The glass igloos here all have electric water heaters, which are not convenient for showering, as you have to wait. The rooms are quite warm, thanks to air conditioning and fireplaces, but they are very dry.

If Saariselkä is 3–4°C, then Inari is definitely 3–5°C colder, possibly close to zero. ❄🚘Driving north from Saariselkä for about an hour, you'll pass the small town of Ivalo. The airport for northbound flights is located here. Continue north for about 20 km, a half-hour drive along country roads, and you'll arrive at the Lake Inari area. 🌟🌈The lake area is vast and offers wide-open views. On clear days, you can easily see the aurora borealis. There are also husky sledding and hiking activities in the town, which can be booked at the hotel reception. 🛖🏕Around the lake, there are many small cabins and a few semi-glass cabins. There's a small town in the center of the lake area with a supermarket and a gas station, providing essential supplies. 🍽Most cabins in the lake area offer meal packages. Otherwise, it's really hard to cook your own meals or go out to find food in the icy and snowy conditions. ❄🐾The scenery in front of our countryside cabin was incredibly beautiful, somewhat resembling the small river at the entrance of Kanas Lake in Xinjiang. There was even morning mist. During the Finnish polar night, the sun doesn't fully rise until after 10:30 am, so all the photos have a blue hour quality. 🛀The cabin was considered well-equipped for the lake area, with 24-hour constant hot water, not electrically heated, which is a rare treat in such cold weather. 🥐Also, the hotel offers meal packages. Breakfast is plentiful, and dinner is a set meal, nothing fancy, but filling. You can order à la carte if it's not enough.

The real Finnish Kilopa was the best! Get up early in the morning and go cross-country skiing! Even beginners can do it! It was my first time skiing There is a national park so you can also go trekking! The snow is clean and not slippery so it's great for snow mountain trekking. I went with my mom. Inari is the best place of Finland if you want to take rest from city life and charging up yourself. This is a place covered by snow. Although there is a few number of restaurants and shops, but the people are friendly and view are stunning. You can just walk outside the hotel room and watch the aurora. During daytime, many choices of local tour to spend the time there.

Saariselka is a village with only more than 300 people. The hotel is located here. It is an independent resort. There is a village within a 5-minute walk with several restaurants, supermarkets, souvenir shops and gas stations. In addition, the hotel only has walking and leisure activities, nearby hiking trails and various outdoor activity groups, such as dog sledding, ice motorcycles, aurora chasing groups, etc. The facilities in the hotel are actually very satisfactory. I was really torn before booking. After comparing the first igloo (the most famous one with glass balls) and this one, I chose this place for two reasons. : 1. The room is 11 square meters larger than the glass ball. The glass ball is 18 square meters and feels very crowded. The room here is very spacious at 29 square meters and very comfortable. 2. There is no bathroom in the glass ball. I need to go to the shower space 200 meters away. I can't stand it. It is very comfortable here. Although it is said that every time hot water is provided, you have to wait for 15 minutes. In fact, my wife and I can complete the shower with 15 minutes of hot water. The hotel restaurant is very large and gives people a warm and comfortable feeling. Two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) are included in the room rate. Both meals are buffet and the dishes are average. Some netizens mentioned that macarons are free here. This is true, and the quality level is said to come from France. I absolutely believe it, it is indeed great! The hotel actually has many facilities. On the last night, we chose the outdoor jacuzzi + sauna. We soaked in 40-degree hot water in the snow, and then took a sauna. The fatigue of the day was completely gone, so comfortable! Dog sledding in Finland was a special adventure that allowed us to feel the vast snow-covered nature. The moment when the energetic huskies pulled the sled with vigor and raced through the silvery white world was extremely exhilarating and memorable. The dogs were surprisingly strong, and it was a wonderful experience that allowed us to feel a bond with them. It was also fascinating to stop along the way to take a break in the quiet snowy fields and enjoy the clear air that is unique to Finland.
