When you think of a "desert," many people might picture endless expanses of sand as far as the eye can see, camels, and golden dunes... but experiencing the Kubuqi Desert (库布其沙漠) firsthand this time made me realize that China's deserts are just as charming and full of fascinating stories as anywhere else. Kubuqi is one of China’s major deserts, ranking as the 7th largest in the country. Situated in the northern part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in northern China, it stretches along the Yellow River, with most of its vast landscape falling within Ordos City. The name "Kubuqi" has a meaning related to its shape, which stretches like a bowstring. In the past, this region suffered from severe desertification, but China has carried out continuous ecological restoration and planting projects to control the shifting dunes. This has led to many areas returning to green spaces, meaning that what you see today isn’t just "sand," but also patches of greenery scattered throughout. ✨ For this trip, we chose to join a guided tour, which was incredibly convenient because they handled all the transportation and logistics, getting us right into the desert area hassle-free. 🏜️ Since we've made it to the desert, we've got to go all out! It made our day in Kubuqi jam-packed with action, especially riding the camel 🐫. At first I thought it would be a chill ride, but the moment the camel stood up... I had to hold on for dear life! Then there was the sand sliding—so much fun, bringing out my inner child, though definitely a bit thrilling. But the activity that felt the most fun and gave the clearest view of the desert's sheer scale was the Cable Car. From up there, you can see the endless stretches of sand alternating with resilient vegetation fighting to grow amidst the arid environment. 🎒 If joining a tour, what should you prepare? Going with a tour is super easy since the transportation and main activities are already sorted out.
