He hailed from the Mongolian Barlas tribe and ruled from 1370 to 1405. Famous for his conquests of Central Asia, the Caucasus region, as well as present-day Iran and Iraq, the monument depicts the legendary leader on horseback, crowned, and is located at the center of a historic square adorned with well-maintained greenery. A massive spiral tower soaring into the sky. This is exactly how many people picture the Tower of Babel—and it's precisely the kind of imagery splashed across websites promoting tours to Iraq. Except, this isn't Babylon. The photos usually show either the Malwiya Minaret or its little brother, the minaret of the Abu Dulaf Mosque. Both are located in Samarra, both date back to the 9th century, and both feature that iconic spiral design. As for what the real Tower of Babel looked like? Nobody actually knows. Malwiya is the older of the two. Built between 848 and 852 under Caliph Al-Mutawakkil, it briefly held the title of the tallest minaret in the world. It stands 52 meters high with a 33-meter base, spiraling upwards in five continuous turns. The name "Malwiya" itself translates from Arabic as "snail shell." Legend has it that the Caliph once rode a white donkey all the way to the top—the ramp is certainly wide enough to make that possible. The mosque it originally belonged to was the largest in the Islamic world, capable of holding up to 10,000 worshippers at once. Today, the site functions as a sort of museum, though climbing to the top is off-limits for safety reasons. Abu Dulaf is slightly newer and a bit more modest. The same Caliph built it about 15 kilometers outside of Samarra. It was intended to be a replica of the Great Mosque for a new capital city that he never managed to finish. Here, the minaret is 34 meters tall, the spiral is steeper, and it has six turns. And not a single soul around. I climbed Abu Dulaf all the way to the top. I made my way up the exterior spiral staircase, with no handrails, in the pouring rain. Just the wind, a sheer drop, and 9th-century baked bricks under my feet. The views open up to the endless Iraqi plains stretching out in every direction. It literally felt like standing on the edge of history.

Where do Iraqis go on vacation? Well, one of the most popular places is the Gali Ali Beg waterfall in Kurdistan. It's one of the highest in the Middle East. Why here? Well, federal Iraq is flat and 50 degrees Celsius in the summer. But here there are mountains, coolness, cliffs, water, autumn forests. It feels like you've entered a different country. Actually, in a sense, that's true—Kurdistan lives by its own rules. You can buy alcohol here, the atmosphere is noticeably more relaxed. For a resident of Baghdad or Basra, it's practically a foreign country, just a few hours' drive away. Restaurants right above the waterfall, wooden bridges along the cliffs, families with children and grandparents, couples, souvenir shops. I suspect the summer here is about like Anapa in August. But in winter, especially in the rain, it was very calm, atmospheric, and intimate.

Mar Mattai has stood on Mount Alfaf since 363 AD. It is one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world, founded two hundred years before the advent of Islam. The monk Mar Mattai fled here from persecution by the Roman emperor, climbed the mountain, and stayed. Others followed him. At one point, seven thousand monks lived here. Now there are seven. You can easily count them by the plates on the dining table. The monastery itself is quiet and empty, but you can safely enter and wander. At the foot of the mountain are the tiny villages of Merga, Bashiqa, and Bahzani. A few streets, a few dozen houses, and their own church. They have a unique "symbiosis" with the monastery. Residents sometimes work there and bring food. Why are the villages so small? In 2014, people abandoned their homes and fled. Some families took refuge in the monastery on the mountain. Interestingly, Christians appeared in Iraq as early as apostolic times—long before the Arabs and Islam. The Assyrians, the indigenous people of Mesopotamia, adopted Christianity in the first centuries AD and have remained faithful to it ever since. There are only a few of them left—in 2003, there were about half a million Christians in Iraq, but today they number approximately 150,000. Most live in Kurdistan.
