Located in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, the Coal and Fossil Museum "Horuru" showcases the history of coal mining in the Joban coalfield and exhibits fossil specimens excavated in Iwaki City and various foreign countries. The fossil exhibition room features globally rare fossils. The skeletal specimens, such as the 85-million-year-old Elasmosaurus and the approximately 4-million-year-old Iwaki Whale, are so lifelike that they seem ready to move at any moment. There is also a corner where visitors can touch fossils, making it an enjoyable learning experience for both adults and children. The learning specimen exhibition room displays various specimens and panels, including fossils of Iwaki's land and creatures, coal, and rocks. Experience the underwater world at the Aquamarine Fukushima Aquarium in Iwaki, Fukushima. This coastal aquarium is unique for its two coelacanth specimens on display. It also features botanical garden-like exhibits and an artificial beach called 'Janome Beach,' making it a place to learn about various forms of life beyond just marine creatures. Tips from the Manager: The aquarium is incredibly spacious, allowing for a full day of enjoyment! Personally, I loved the corner where you can eat sushi while watching the fish (it's the first time I've seen a sushi restaurant inside an aquarium). It's really easy to find, just a 3-minute walk from Iwaki Station. The station is close and there are many convenience stores and restaurants in the area. It's in the center of town, but it was very quiet. There is a cafe on the first floor that sells drinks and bread. Other than that, the room wasn't much different from a normal guesthouse. From paleontological perspectives to modern environmental issues, it creates an environment that closely resembles the natural habitats of living creatures, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in these real-world conditions. 🐟 The aquarium boasts numerous large tanks, including one where the Oyashio and Kuroshio Currents meet, where you can admire the swimming movements of large schools of fish. Smaller fish also form large whirlpools or cylindrical spheres, a clever way to defend against larger predators. 🦦 I was lucky enough to catch several animal feedings right after entering the aquarium.
