Kintaikyo Bridge is one of Japan's three most famous bridges, while Iwakuni Castle, also known as Yokoyama Castle, was originally built in 1608. It was later abandoned but reconstructed in 1962 and is now listed among Japan's Top 100 Castles. My two children and I purchased the 'Kintaikyo Sightseeing Pass,' which combines the bridge crossing fee, round-trip cable car ticket, and admission to Iwakuni Castle. This package allows visitors to explore all three attractions at a more economical price compared to buying individual tickets. From JR Iwakuni Station, you can transfer to the Iwakuni Bus to reach Kintaikyo Bridge. The bridge was originally made entirely of wood, but after being destroyed by a flood, its piers were rebuilt with stone for added durability. Before crossing the bridge, you can enjoy playing in the clear, pristine stream below. My kids had fun skipping stones on the water. When walking on the bridge, be cautious as the surface is sloped and can be slippery in places, making it easy to lose your footing! After crossing Kintaikyo Bridge, you’ll arrive at Kikko Park, which features cherry blossom trees, osmanthus trees, and maple trees—some of which were already starting to turn red. The park also has a unique facility called 'U no Sato' (free of charge), which is a cormorant breeding center. Although there are no longer cormorant fishing performances, it’s still educational to see the efforts in ecological conservation. Taking the cable car up the mountain, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Kintaikyo Bridge and its surroundings from Iwakuni Castle. Inside the castle's keep, there are displays of Edo-period clothing and exhibits on the construction techniques of Kintaikyo Bridge. The view from the castle overlooking the area below is stunning, and on a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the Seto Inland Sea!

Iwakuni Castle is a nice place to stop by if you ride the cable car to the top of the mountain. It's a nice clean castle like many others but the best thing about this one is you can oversee the Kintaikyo Bridge downstairs. It was destroyed during a war and later reconstructed . It's amazing to see the types of swords and armors used at that time. 2021.9 A popular spot in Yamaguchi Prefecture😍😍 When you step inside, it's a different world❤️ This is a restaurant where you can feel the nostalgic traditional Japanese culture and the Japanese spirit✨✨✨ "Irori Sanzoku" is a restaurant famous for its large Sanzoku musubi, Sanzoku yaki, Sanzoku udon, and Kougyu beef✨✨ There are two stores, the Kuda store and the Nishiki store, I often go to the Nishiki store, which is small and has a mature atmosphere with few people😉 The Kuda store is very large and the presentation is quite good. #Hanami The cherry blossoms seen from Kintai Bridge are spectacular. You should definitely try the soft serve ice cream on the castle side of Kintai Bridge. There are two shops, Musashi and Kojiro, so choose whichever you like. It is said that Sasaki Kojiro learned the secret technique of the Tsubame Gaeshi on Kintai Bridge. There are many foreigners because the Iwakuni US military base is nearby. I recommend going a little further in the future, but the road behind Iwakuni Station on the Shinkansen line when the cherry blossoms are falling. It is as beautiful as a cherry blossom tunnel of falling cherry blossoms.

A part of the balustrade (handrail) that was used on the Kintai Bridge for 50 years is on display near the front desk. This is the local business hotel "City Hotel Ando". It's not a new hotel, but it's a simple hotel near the station. Breakfast needs to be reserved the day before, but it's reasonably priced at "600 yen". The key 🔑 is inserted and twisted, which is a rare system. Iwakuni Station is easily accessible by public transportation such as buses, and is a great place to keep as a base for sightseeing. #AutumnFoliage Autumn leaves color the park known as the Kamakura of the West This park is adjacent to Kikko Park, the former residence of the lord of Iwakuni, Yoshikawa, and was named after its beautiful autumn leaves. Combined with the appearance of the neighboring Yoshikawa family graveyard, it is also known as the Kamakura of the West. In late autumn, fallen ginkgo leaves spread like a carpet on the ground.

Irori Sanzoku is a restaurant that is well known to all Yamaguchi residents. Many people have probably gone there on a drive after getting their driver's license. In fact, it's not a theme park, but a restaurant. It was also featured in the Prefectural Show. 📺️❇️ As you can see in the photo, the park is spacious and you can walk around and sightsee. Highlights: This Nagayamon gate belongs to a former samurai residence of the Kagawa family. The Kagawa family is one of the five elders of the Iwakuni domain. Because the residence is still used, only the gate can be viewed. The gate is believed to have been built in 1693, and has been well maintained.😬 It is a really fine gate. Although visitors are not allowed to go in the residence, I can already feel the history from touring around the gate and residence. This museum displays an art collection that includes glassware, samurai armor, ceramics and the furniture of Iwakuni's feudal lords. It is named after the family who owns the collection. It's more of a history museum with artifacts, but they're showcasing the artisans' mastery of the craft rather than historical relevance to the area. The Kintai Bridge is a nationally designated scenic spot and is one of Japan's most famous wooden bridges. It is a popular tourist spot in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It costs 310 yen for adults to cross. From a distance, the arched bridge looks very beautiful. When you actually cross it, it is surprisingly high. Because it is arched, there is a difference in height and the steps are quite steep. For my first visit to Yamaguchi Prefecture, I chose to stay at the Iwakuni Kokusai Kanko Hotel right next to the Kintaikyo Bridge. The location is absolutely perfect. You can admire the Kintaikyo Bridge both by day and by night, with each offering a completely different vibe! During the day, you can fully explore the Kintaikyo Bridge and Iwakuni Castle. #Get a discount without relying on luck at Kintaikyo Bridge, Iwakuni, Hiroshima Cherry blossom season at the beautiful Kintaikyo Bridge 🌸 This was my 4th visit (on April 1st, 2026). This time, I saw 80% of the cherry blossoms in bloom. I love this place so much; every visit is impressive. I hope to come again ♥️ Love it! This time, we chose to go during cherry blossom season because it's one of the most classic and beautiful views in Japan. The arched wooden bridge spans the Nishiki River, with a line of pink cherry blossoms and mountains in the background, creating a peaceful, romantic, and beautiful atmosphere. I want to say that the view of the bridge and cherry blossoms is unique and hard to find elsewhere. This place is definitely worth it for those who love taking photos and taking leisurely strolls. On the day I went, there was a cherry blossom festival with stalls selling goods. You can stroll along the river, have a picnic, or take the cable car up to see the view of Iwakuni Castle, but we didn't go up this time because it was going to rain. Once you arrive, you can purchase a set ticket that includes the bridge crossing (round trip), ropeway ride, and entry to Iwakuni Castle🏯 — a convenient option that covers the main highlights. Crossing Kintaikyo Bridge is an experience in itself, with its distinctive wooden arches and scenic river views. On the other side, the atmosphere shifts — quieter, slower, and surrounded by greenery. Around Kikko Park, you’ll find small shops selling souvenirs and local snacks. Yamaguchi is known for its lotus root, so keep an eye out for lotus root croquettes — crispy on the outside with a slight crunch inside. There’s also a well-known ice cream spot, Musashi Ice Cream Shop🍦, famous for offering around 100 flavours — from classic options to more unusual ones like wasabi, soy sauce, and even tomato. It’s a fun (and slightly adventurous) must-try. Around Kikko Park, you’ll also come across Kikko Shrine⛩️, a more formal shrine with a quiet, structured layout that contrasts nicely with the livelier shopping street nearby. It’s a good spot to slow down for a moment and take in a more traditional side of Iwakuni before continuing on. Next, take the ropeway🚠 up to Iwakuni Castle — the ride itself only takes about 3 minutes. From the top station, it’s an easy walk to the castle. Inside, you’ll find displays of swords and samurai armour along with a viewing deck that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. About 1 km away from the ropeway station, the crowds slowly fade, and the path leads you into the forest. Hidden among the trees is Shirayamabime Shrine — a much quieter, almost forgotten corner of Iwakuni. The wooden torii gate stands weathered and simple, surrounded by roots and fallen leaves, giving the place a calm, untouched feel that’s very different from the busier areas near the bridge. If you have extra time, there are also a few small museums nearby, including the unique Iwakuni Shirohebi Museum (White Snake Museum), which showcases the rare white snakes native to the area. Iwakuni is a charming and laid-back destination. It’s perfect if you’re looking to step away from the hustle and bustle of Hiroshima for half a day, while still enjoying a mix of history, nature, and local food.

These casual little moments are the most fun😃 Using Hiroshima as your home base makes for the ultimate trip where you can enjoy the ocean, history, and breathtaking views all at once. Shrine Castle
