The huge iron pot was placed over a traditional stove, where fresh chicken, mushrooms, potatoes, cabbage, tofu, and handmade corn buns slowly simmered together. The rich aroma filled the restaurant, and every bite was warm, comforting, and packed with flavour. Sharing the meal with friends made the experience even more special because Iron Pot Stew is all about gathering around the table and enjoying good food together. After lunch, I explored Weihu Hall (威虎厅), a beautifully designed cultural space inspired by traditional Northeastern architecture. People say you can only stay home and enjoy the air conditioning in August, but I disagree. Popular attractions are crowded, tickets cost double, and accommodations feel cramped. I’ve been to these 8 places myself. They’re accessible by high-speed train, the scenery is stunning, and best of all—you’ll hear the sound of the wind because there are so few people. 01 Xianyang | Shaanxi Qianling Tomb and Yuanjia Village—one quiet, one lively—make a perfect day trip. Start at Qianling Tomb in the morning. Don’t rush up the steps; first check out the wordless stele. The stone is hot from the sun, but standing there you can feel the wind blowing in from Liangshan Pass. ⏰ Arrive before noon for the best light. The sun hits the stone lions at an angle, so you won’t have to wait for a photo spot. In the afternoon, head to Yuanjia Village’s Guanzhong Impression Experience. Don’t crowd the main street at the entrance; turn right into the second alley where the aroma of chili oil will pull you in. 🍜 Try Lao Lu’s mutton blood soup for 15 yuan a bowl. The mutton blood is as tender as tofu, and the chili is fragrant without being overpowering. ⚠️ A quick tip: the shuttle bus inside Qianling costs 30 yuan, but walking takes only about 20 minutes. The grass is dark green, wildflowers bloom in patches, and the wind blows like colorful waves. Avoid the “grassland attractions” that are fenced off with tour groups. Rent a car and drive deep into the grassland. The 20 km stretch north of the Jinzhanghan tribe has almost no tourists—only cattle, sheep, and cloud shadows. ⏰ The best time is between 5 and 7 PM. The sunset turns the grass golden, shadows stretch long, and every photo looks like desktop wallpaper. ⚠️ Mosquitoes are fierce on the grassland. Light-colored long sleeves and pants are a must. West Lake in Hangzhou is famous and crowded, but if you slow down and turn into the reed marshes of Xixi, that’s the real Jiangnan. With only three days, I picked a few cities full of local life to stay slowly, explore slowly, and show you the most authentic everyday moments. 1️⃣ Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai The wind in the Qilian Mountains carries the scent of fresh grass. I arrived at 3 PM and stood at the entrance of Amdo Suo Scenic Area. Looking up, there were snowy peaks; looking down, a grass slope covered in wildflowers. From afar, the sound of water came from the bottom of the Heihe Grand Canyon. Don’t rush to drive away. Walk along the boardwalk into the canyon for 20 minutes. The river water is a clear gray-blue, and the stones are smooth and round. Lenglongling isn’t for those in a hurry. It’s perfect to bring a folding stool, sit on the grass, and watch clouds roll over the ridges. ⏰ The light is best after 6 PM. The mountains glow warm gold, and shadows stretch long. ⚠️ Temperatures drop quickly at night. Bring a fleece jacket and don’t wear just short sleeves. You can stay in a small inn in Ebao Town. The conditions are basic, but waking up to a view of the snowy mountains is worth it. 2️⃣ Hangzhou | Zhejiang I advise you not to join the crowds at Broken Bridge and Bai Causeway. The east gate is packed like rush hour, while the west gate is so empty you could practice tai chi. I prefer to go around to Xixi National Wetland Park, take a punt boat into the reeds, where the sound of the oars cutting through water drowns out everything else. Occasionally, an egret flies overhead. 🍜 After the wetland, have a bowl of Pian’er Chuan noodles on Tianmu Mountain Road nearby. The broth is so fresh it’ll make your eyebrows drop. Very convenient. 3️⃣ Shenyang | Liaoning People in Shenyang live simply, and the attractions reflect that. Beiling Park’s ticket is affordable, but the park is so large you could walk yourself tired. Rent a bike and ride to the foot of Qingzhao Mausoleum. The ancient pine groves are more interesting than just visiting the palace. The Wugujingguang Relic Pagoda is hidden in a residential area. The tower is gray and plain, but walking around it, you can hear wind chimes ringing. The sound is so pure it feels like it cleanses your ears. Beita Falun Temple is nearby. Visit in the afternoon to catch the monks’ evening chanting. You won’t understand the words, but the deep resonance is calming. I don’t recommend spending a whole day at Shenyang Expo Garden unless you have kids. Two hours is enough before you get tired of it. ⚠️ After 4 PM, Beiling Park has half the visitors and softer light, perfect for photos. 4️⃣ Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang The blue of Sayram Lake is unreal, like someone poured paint into the water. I drove halfway around the lake and parked on the less crowded south shore. The wind was so strong my hat almost flew off, but the sound of waves lapping the shore was incredibly soothing. Anjihai Grand Canyon isn’t on the usual tourist route. Search “Anjihai Grand Canyon viewing platform” on your GPS. Standing on the cliff edge looking down, the reddish-brown canyon looks like a giant crack in the earth. My legs went weak, but it was truly breathtaking. The hot springs in Wenquan County were a pleasant surprise. After leaving Sayram Lake at dusk, I soaked in a wild hot spring. The water temperature was just right, and my skin felt silky afterward. ⏰ Visit Sayram Lake in the morning. In the afternoon, the wind picks up and waves form, dulling the blue. ⚠️ Anjihai Canyon has no guardrails. Keep a close eye on children. 5️⃣ Xilingol League | Inner Mongolia Ulagai Grassland is the flattest grassland I’ve seen—endless, with no hills or trees, only waves of grass and cloud shadows. Park anywhere and walk 100 meters into the grass, and you won’t hear the highway anymore. That day, I lay on the grass, the sun warming my body, the wind brushing past my ears. I felt like a grass seed blown by the wind. 🍜 At noon, eat hand-pulled meat in Bayin Hushuo Town. The meat is perfectly cooked. Dip it in wild chive flower sauce to remove any gamey taste. But to me, this is what the grassland should be. 6️⃣ Jilin I recommend visiting Songhua Lake at dusk. Take the last boat to Wuhu Island. The lake surface is dyed golden red by the sunset, and the ripples sparkle like broken gold. Rime Island is a winter attraction but requires luck. If the temperature isn’t low enough or humidity isn’t high enough, you won’t see the rime. When I went, I was lucky. Early in the morning, the riverbank was covered in white rime, and the branches were full of ice crystals, like walking into a crystal palace. ⏰ To see rime, arrive at the riverbank before 7 AM. If you’re late, the sun will melt it. ⚠️ Dress in layers for Rime Island in winter. The river wind is bone-chilling. You can’t have too many heat patches on your back. 7️⃣ Ya’an | Sichuan The panda base and canyon in Bifengxia are connected. I took my mom, who was worried about tiring out, so we only walked the lower half of the canyon, mainly to see waterfalls and streams. We took the sightseeing bus up to the panda base. The pandas were all chewing bamboo. One sat on a tree branch, daydreaming without moving for a long time, and we found ourselves daydreaming too. The canyon air is moist. Taking a deep breath feels like your lungs are being cleansed. 🍜 After descending, eat Ya fish in Ya’an city. The fish is so tender it falls apart with chopsticks. The soup is milky white. One bowl warms you all over. ⚠️ The sightseeing bus in Bifengxia stops running at 5:30 PM. Don’t stay out too late. 8️⃣ Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan The heat in Xishuangbanna is sticky, but the morning in the Dai Ethnic Garden is comfortable. Enter at 8 AM. The scent of Burmese osmanthus under the bamboo houses is intoxicating. The Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is huge. I rented an electric cart and went straight to the Hundred Flowers Garden and the aquatic plants area. The giant water lily leaves are big enough to hold a child. The peacock release in the Primitive Forest Park is the highlight. The water in Xiemu River flows slowly, reflecting like a mirror. The village is almost untouched by commercialization, and locals still live there. Grandmas shell beans by the doorstep, dogs nap in the sun, and time seems frozen in the last century. 🍜 The village store sells homemade pickled radish for 5 yuan a bag. It’s crunchy and more authentic than anything you’ll find in city Hunan restaurants. ⚠️ There are no guesthouses in the village. If you want to stay overnight, you’ll need to return to Yongzhou city. The water is calm, and the mist hasn’t lifted. The peaks on both sides look like they grew out of an ink painting. The boatman poles the raft while telling stories about the rock formations. Just listen and enjoy. Don’t rush off after the ride. At the end of Song Street, a small path leads to Zhizhi Hermitage. It’s quiet with towering ancient trees and the sound of the stream. The mother trees of Dahongpao tea in the scenic area are famous, but the terraced tea gardens along the way are more beautiful. ⚠️ The steps up Tianyou Peak are steep and slippery when wet. Don’t climb in the rain. If your stamina is average, the mid-mountain viewing platform is enough. But that afternoon I sat daydreaming by the salt lake in Yuncheng, and suddenly felt that “relaxing” has little to do with city size. Some places you visit just to play, others you visit and don’t want to leave. These 8 cities are my “three days is just right” picks after checking them out for you. 01 Yuncheng | Shanxi Yuncheng’s least touristy attraction is the salt lake. ⏰ Go after 6 PM. The sun slants down, turning the lake pink and purple. Fewer people, and the breeze is gentle. It’s too sunny during the day. The midday salt lake glare is harsh, and photos are overexposed. 📍 It’s about a 20-minute taxi ride from downtown. Just set your GPS to “Yuncheng Salt Lake Scenic Area.” Don’t buy the combo ticket; some activities aren’t worth it. Just stroll the lakeside boardwalk, watch the water birds, and admire the distant Zhongtiao Mountains—that’s the best part. 🍜 After the salt lake, don’t rush back to the hotel. Head to Hedong Night Market for a bowl of Jiezhou lamb soup. The broth is rich and the meat tender. Remember to order half a portion of flatbread—it’s enough. ⚠️ Night market stalls start opening around 7:30 PM. Don’t go too early. 02 Baoding | Hebei Baoding’s attractions are scattered like spilled beans, but each one is worth picking up. Qingxi Mausoleum, Baishi Mountain, Yesanpo, Baiyangdian—choose any two for a three-day stay. Trying to see them all will wear you out. My itinerary: Day 1 for Qingxi Mausoleum, Day 2 for Baishi Mountain, Day 3 to relax. Qingxi Mausoleum is much quieter than Qingdong Mausoleum. ⏰ Arrive by 9 AM before the crowds. The breeze among the pines and cypresses is cool. ⚠️ The walk between Tailin and Muling takes about 30 minutes. Don’t walk it foolishly. The scenic area’s electric shuttle costs 20 yuan per person. Save your energy for the stone statues later. Baishi Mountain is a different experience, focusing on boardwalks and misty clouds. 🚄 Take a bus from Baoding city to Laiyuan, about 2 hours. Buy a cable car ticket to the top. Don’t skip it; hiking up takes 3 hours, and you’ll be too tired to enjoy the view. If you’re afraid of heights, avoid the glass boardwalk and take the detour. I didn’t visit Baiyangdian because of the season. To see the reeds and lotus flowers, go between July and September. If you visit in summer, check boat ticket prices in advance. Some boat operators raise prices last minute, so confirm before boarding. 03 Gannan | Gansu Gannan leaves you speechless. Zagana, Langmusi, Yeliguan, Gahai Lake—during my three-day stay, I kept wondering: is this really Earth? Zagana is perfect for an overnight stay in a guesthouse. ⏰ Wake up at 6 AM to see the morning mist. That scene beats any filter. 📍 Stay in Dongwa Village. It’s a 10-minute walk to the viewpoint. Don’t drive; the narrow road and passing cars will stress you out. Langmusi is a town, not just a monastery. There’s one in Sichuan and one in Gansu. Tickets are sold separately. ⚠️ From 1 PM to 4 PM, there’s a debate session. You might not understand the words, but watching the monks’ clapping and expressions is powerful. Don’t order blindly at the Tibetan restaurants. Not everyone can handle butter tea. Order a small pot to try first. Between Yeliguan and Gahai Lake, I recommend Gahai Lake more. Yeliguan’s canyon hike takes 4 hours round trip and can be exhausting if you’re not fit. Gahai Lake is gentler. Walk slowly on the wooden boardwalk. Water birds flutter at your feet—perfect for daydreaming. 🚄 There’s no direct bus between Gannan attractions. Renting a car is best. Off-season costs about 400 yuan per day. Splitting among four people is most cost-effective. 04 Xishuangbanna | Yunnan Xishuangbanna’s heat is sticky, but under the big banyan tree in the Dai Ethnic Garden, the breeze is sweet. Don’t rush to attractions on day 1. Rent an electric bike at Gaozhuang Xishuangjing for 30 yuan a day and ride along the Lancang River. 📍 The riverside night market is half the price of the Starlight Night Market. The same Dai-style barbecue here doesn’t require waiting in line. The Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is worth a full day. ⚠️ Be sure to take the electric shuttle inside. The garden is too big to walk through. ⏰ Enter at 9 AM. Explore the east tropical rainforest first, then visit the west exotic flower garden in the afternoon. The light filtering through the canopy makes the leaves glow. The peacock release at the Primitive Forest Park happens at 10 AM and 4 PM. Don’t miss it. Afterward, walk deeper into the canopy corridor, dozens of meters above ground. The wooden planks sway underfoot, and your palms will sweat by the end. 🍜 After descending, grab a serving of pineapple purple rice. The sticky rice’s sweetness mixed with pineapple’s tartness beats any dessert for cooling down. 05 Xinxiang | Henan Xinxiang’s Baoquan and Baligou are Henan’s own “Little Jiuzhaigou.” Baoquan’s water is green—so green it looks fake. ⏰ Morning visits are best. Sunlight on the water reveals the pebbles below. There’s a glass viewing platform inside the park. Looking down at the emerald pool takes courage. ⚠️ On busy holidays, the boardwalk gets crowded. Enter by 8:30 AM. Baligou is different from Baoquan. It features waterfalls and mountains. Walking from the park entrance to Tianhe Waterfall takes about 2 hours. There’s shade along the way, so it’s not too hot. But the last set of stairs is steep. If you’re with elderly people, take the slide for 30 yuan per person. It saves 40 minutes of climbing. 🚄 Xinxiang East Station has a direct tourist bus to these two spots, but service is limited and stops after 3 PM. If you’re staying downtown, a taxi is better. It costs about 150 yuan one way. Splitting the fare among several people is more flexible. 06 Bijie | Guizhou Bijie’s Zhijin Cave is the most alien-like karst cave I’ve seen. It stays 16 degrees year-round. Wear long sleeves in summer. 📍 Zhijin Cave is in Zhijin County, about 1.5 hours by car from Bijie city. ⚠️ The cave is dimly lit and slippery. Wear non-slip shoes. I saw someone take off their heels halfway and walk barefoot. The full tour takes about 2 hours. An electric shuttle takes you back to the entrance. Don’t skip the 10 yuan fee; walking back is tiring. Baili Rhododendron is a seasonal highlight. ⏰ Flowers bloom only from April to early May. Other times, it’s just trees. If you visit in spring, the rhododendron-covered hills will leave you speechless. After the bloom, I recommend visiting Caohai to see black-necked cranes. 🍜 Bijie city’s snacks are concentrated in Qixingguan District. Try a bowl of claypot lamb noodles. The broth is so fresh it’ll make your tongue tingle. ⚠️ Zhijin Cave is far from the city. Plan it for your first or last day to avoid tiring back-and-forth trips. 07 Jilin Winter in Jilin City belongs to the rime ice. But here’s a counterintuitive tip: Rime Island doesn’t have rime ice every day. It depends on luck and temperature. ⏰ The best time to see rime ice is 7 AM to 9 AM. After sunrise, it starts melting. You need to stay on the island or arrive at Wulajie the day before. Otherwise, waking up at 5:30 AM and rushing there means freezing cold. ⚠️ Rime forms under “temperature difference + no wind + moisture.” If it snowed or was windy the day before, there’s probably no rime the next day. Don’t rely only on weather forecasts. Call your guesthouse before you go for the most reliable info. Songhua Lake is a summer cooling spot and a frozen world in winter. I recommend summer more. Take a boat tour. The mountains on both sides are dark green, and the water is refreshingly cool. 📍 Near Fengman Dam, there’s a cast-iron pot fish restaurant using fish from Songhua Lake. The meat is firm, and the broth is milky white. Served with flatbread, it’s amazing. 🚄 It takes about 1 hour by car from Jilin city to Rime Island. No direct bus is available. You’ll need a private car or self-drive. Roads are slippery in winter. If you’re a new driver, I recommend hiring a car for safety. 08 Shanghai Shanghai needs no introduction, but here’s how to make the most of a “three-day stay.” Day 1 for the Expo Park. 📍 The China Art Museum (the red bracketed building) is free but requires advance reservation via the official account. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays. Don’t go for nothing. Next door is the Mercedes-Benz Arena. If there’s a show at night, catch it. Day 2 for Yuyuan Garden and City God Temple. ⏰ Arrive at Yuyuan Garden right when it opens at 8:30 AM. It’s less crowded, and you can get empty shots of the Nine-Bend Bridge. After 10 AM, tour groups flood in, and you won’t find a spot to stand. 🍜 The Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant outside Yuyuan has great soup dumplings but expect at least a 1-hour wait. I suggest trying a small shop in the nearby alleys. The taste is almost as good, and prices are half. Day 3 for Guangfulin Cultural Site. Many don’t know this place, but it’s really worth it. The underwater museum building is half submerged, half above water, like it’s growing out of the lake. ⚠️ The park is large. Rent a shared bike. Walking will tire your legs. As for Disneyland, go if you have kids. If it’s just adults, think twice. The summer lines will test your patience. 🚄 Shanghai Metro Line 11 goes directly to Disneyland. Don’t take a taxi. Traffic jams can be maddening. Among these 8 cities, I like Yuncheng and Gannan best. One is perfect for solo daydreaming, the other for leisurely time with friends. It is a nationally protected cultural relic and was selected as one of the top 10 archaeological discoveries in China in 1999. The site covers about 150,000 square meters. The mountain shape resembles a resting turtle, which is how it got its name. The remains span a vast time period, from the late Neolithic period about 6,000 years ago through the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the Han dynasties, the Wei and Jin dynasties, and up to the late Ming dynasty. The stratigraphy includes 13 layers, making it a rare long-sequence large ancient settlement in the middle and upper reaches of the Yalu River. The site is divided by a road into east and west zones: the west zone was the ancient residential area, and the east zone contains concentrated burial sites. Archaeological excavations have unearthed more than 6,000 artifacts, including distinctive stone chamber tombs and square altar stone tombs. It provides key evidence for studying the origin of Goguryeo, ancient ethnic exchanges in Northeast China, and the development of civilization on the southern slope of Changbai Mountain, fully connecting Tonghua’s 6,000-year cultural history. After completing this route, I think these are the coolest spots worth hitting the gas for. 01 Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang The nine twists and eighteen turns of Bayinbuluke only truly come alive after 6 PM. Sunlight filters through the clouds, and the river looks like a flowing silver chain linking nine suns together. Don’t rush to the viewing platform; walk 200 meters to the right on the grassy slope. There are half as many people and even wider views. ⏰ Arrive one hour before sunset for the softest light. The Taklamakan Desert is scorching at noon, but if you enter at 7 AM, the sand dunes look wind-sculpted, and every step brings a cool touch. The off-road driver will take you to the highest sand ridge, where you can lie down and watch the clouds with only the sound of the wind around you. ⚠️ Cell signal is spotty. Download offline maps in advance. The Tarim Poplar Forest Park turns golden only by late October, but the green poplars in August have their own charm. Walk along the boardwalk deeper inside, where old tree roots twist into natural seats. Sit for a while and listen to lizards scurrying through the camel thorn bushes. Tickets plus shuttle bus cost just over 100 yuan. Three hours is enough to explore. 02 Suizhou | Hubei Dahong Mountain avoids the crowds of Shennongjia, like a quiet hidden gem. You can drive directly to Lingguan Pass halfway up the mountain, then hike 40 minutes to the summit. The mountain breeze carries the bitter scent of pine needles, drying your sweat as soon as it appears. ⏰ Before 10 AM, the mist lingers, making the boardwalk feel like walking on clouds—perfect for ethereal photos. Don’t rush down. At the foot of the mountain, the Qiaohe Ancient Trail hides several clear pools where you can see small fish between the stones. Take off your shoes and step in. The coolness rises from your feet to your head, more refreshing than air conditioning. 🚄 It’s about a 40-minute taxi ride from Suizhou South Station. The mountain road is winding, so bring motion sickness medicine if needed. 🍜 The local farmhouse’s chestnut chicken is a must-try. The chestnuts are fresh and sweet this season, the chicken is tender and falling off the bone, and paired with a bowl of crispy rice porridge, it’s pure comfort. 03 Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Gansu Morning in Zhagana is a tug of war between mist and sunlight. Staying in Daiba Village, you can see the stone city slowly take shape in the light when you open the window. Don’t follow the tour buses on the main road. Instead, climb the small path behind Dongwa Village. In half an hour, you’ll reach Fairy Beach, a meadow full of wildflowers with a steep rock wall opposite. ⏰ Arrive before 8 AM to have the whole mountain to yourself. Langmu Temple isn’t just one temple but two on either side of the town. I recommend going to Gerdy Temple before sunset. Walk along the source of the Bailong River. The canyon is cool and you might see monks fetching water by the river. The prayer wheels here are older than those at Labrang Monastery but sound more solid when spun. Yeliguan and Gahai Lake are good to visit in one day. Yeliguan’s red Danxia cliffs look like they’re on fire. It’s scorching at noon, but inside the valley it’s pleasantly cool. Gahai Lake is gentler, with a wooden boardwalk stretching into the wetlands. Water birds take off and land in the distance, and the wind ripples the grass like waves. ⚠️ Weather on the plateau changes quickly. Don’t skimp on windbreakers and rain gear. Afternoon showers are common. 04 Qiqihar | Heilongjiang Watching red-crowned cranes take flight at Zhalong Wetland is a timed ritual. There are shows at 9:30 AM and 2 PM daily. The cranes run up the slope and take off, their wings stirring the air as they skim just above the reeds. 📍 Get to the center of the crane viewing platform 20 minutes early. It’s worth the sun. Don’t leave right after the flight. Stroll deeper along the wetland boardwalk. The reeds shine bright green in July and August, rustling in the wind. Occasionally, wild ducks flutter up near your feet. The boardwalk is about 2 kilometers long, flat and easy to walk, even with a stroller. 🍜 The city’s barbecue street is a highlight. Qiqihar barbecue is freshly mixed and grilled. Beef is tossed with onions and egg whites, grilled until the edges are slightly charred, then dipped in dry seasoning. One bite bursts with juicy flavor. Follow it with a bowl of chilled pear juice to refresh and cut the richness. 05 Pingdingshan | Henan Yaoshan—Zhongyuan Giant Buddha Scenic Area—is an underrated mountain. Take the cable car to the top. The granite peaks appear and disappear in the mist, and the wind is strong enough to blow your hat off. ⏰ After 3 PM, the light is best. The mountain glows warm gold, no filter needed for photos. At the foot of the mountain stands the 208-meter-tall Zhongyuan Giant Buddha. Looking up from the lotus base, you feel tiny like a speck of dust. The electric shuttle costs 30 yuan round trip, but if you have the energy, the walk up takes about 20 minutes. Along the way, you can see koi in the release pond. ⚠️ There’s a big temperature difference between the top and bottom, especially after rain. The wind at the summit can be chilling, so bring an extra layer. On the way down, stop in Lushan County for lan guo cai, a stew of vermicelli, tofu, and meat slices. It’s steaming hot and will wash away your hiking fatigue. 06 Jinan | Shandong The “Number One Spring in the World” scenic area sees locals fetching water with buckets as early as 6 AM. To avoid tour groups, come at this time. The three springs of Baotu Spring bubble quietly in the morning light, much calmer than during the day. After visiting the spring, walk north along Qushuiting Street. The cobblestone road is lined with flowing water. Elderly women pick chives at their doorsteps, and cats nap on stone benches. Qianfoshan Mountain is better visited in the evening. Enter from the north gate and hike 30 minutes to Xingguo Zen Temple, just in time for sunset. The city spreads out below, and Daming Lake looks like a sapphire set among buildings. ⏰ Tickets are half price after 6 PM. The money saved is just enough for a bowl of sweet millet porridge at the foot of the mountain. 🍜 In the afternoon, turn into a small alley off Furong Street to find a stall selling youxuan. Freshly baked, the youxuan’s crust is crispy with paper-thin layers. Paired with a bowl of sweet millet porridge, it’s Jinan’s afternoon tea. ⚠️ Kuanghouli snack street is crowded. It’s better to walk a bit further to nearby alleys for old shops. 07 Lu’an | Anhui The waterfalls of Tiantangzhai are at their strongest in August and September. Walking up the trail, waterfalls come one after another, mist hitting your face, and the coolness seeps into your bones. ⏰ Enter the mountain in the morning. Light filters through the leaves, and the mist refracts tiny rainbows. At the summit, you can see the border between Hubei and Anhui provinces. Standing with one foot in each province feels surreal. Don’t take the cable car down. Instead, walk another boardwalk where pine trees grow in all shapes, like a natural bonsai garden. The whole hike takes four to five hours. Wear non-slip shoes and be careful on mossy spots. Wanfo Lake is much gentler. Rent an electric boat to drift on the lake. The breeze carries the scent of wet grass. The small temple on the island isn’t busy, but sitting under the corridor listening to wind chimes is perfect for an afternoon of daydreaming. 🚄 It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Tiantangzhai. The road is good and the scenery is nice. 08 Jilin Summer at Songhua Lake is a hidden cool garden for Northeasterners. Take a boat to Wuhu Island. The water is emerald green, with green mountains reflecting on the surface. The boat’s wake leaves a long white trail. ⏰ Afternoon boat trips after 4 PM are fewer but the light is best. The lake looks like it’s sprinkled with gold flakes. ⚠️ The last boat leaves around 5:30 PM. Don’t lose track of time. Rime Island has no rime in summer, but don’t be disappointed. The Ula Street Manchu town on the island still has old houses with blue bricks and gray tiles. Stone lions at the doors are worn smooth by wind and rain. Rent a bike and circle the island. The wind rustles through cornfields, more lively than the bare branches in winter. 🍜 Back in the city, try a bowl of hot fried starch cakes.
