Fly from Wuhan to Urumqi, then transfer to a high-speed train to Bole, taking about 4 hours. The scenery outside the window changes from desert to oasis, then from oasis to grassland. When the train stops, a 22°C breeze flows in from the platform, a completely different world from Wuhan’s muggy heat. Bortala, meaning "Silver Grassland" in Mongolian. This summer, Bortala was selected as one of the top ten hidden gem cities in China for summer travel searches. The most famous attraction here is Sayram Lake—the last drop of the Atlantic Ocean. In July, the lake’s blue is indescribable, with a comfortable temperature of 15 to 25°C. The three popular summer activities are cycling around the lake, lakeside hiking, and sailing. Here’s a recommended itinerary 🗺️ Day 1: Bole → Sayram Lake (Self-driving around the lake) Depart from Bole in the morning, charter a car or drive yourself to Sayram Lake (about 1 hour). The entrance ticket is 145 RMB, shuttle bus 100 RMB, and it’s recommended to spend most of the day here. It’s best to drive clockwise around the lake—stop at Dianjiangtai, Xihai Grassland, and Songshutou one by one. From Songshutou to S-bend, you can capture the perfect shot of “snow-capped mountains + road + lake” in one frame, and swans are often seen at Kele Yongzhu. Wait by the lake for sunset in the evening, when the lake turns golden and the snow mountain outlines are clear. Stay overnight inside the scenic area or return to Bole. Day 2: Guai Shiyu + Hot Springs In the morning, visit Guai Shiyu—the largest granite rock formation cluster in Northwest China, with bizarre rocks that feel like stepping into an alien world. In the afternoon, go to Bogeda Hot Springs, soak in the outdoor hot spring pool with snow mountains overhead. Stay overnight in the hot spring county. Day 3: Bole City + Return Spend the morning exploring Bole city, visit the Bortala Memorial Park to see 13 themed sculptures and learn about the stories of the various ethnic groups in Bortala. Return in the afternoon. ⏰ If you have more time, consider adding: Guozigou Bridge (near Sayram Lake, a spectacular high mountain canyon bridge) Horgos Port (China-Kazakhstan border, experience border culture) Aibi Lake (the largest saltwater lake in Xinjiang) 🍴 Don’t miss these local foods Bortala’s cuisine carries a strong grassland flavor. Hand-pulled mutton is a must-try; the local lamb is neither gamey nor fishy, simply boiling it in water is enough to bring out its aroma. Milk tea is a daily drink for Mongolian and Kazakh people, salty and rich, very filling when paired with naan bread. Roasted buns have a crispy crust and are filled with juicy lamb and onion. There are many ethnic-style restaurants in Bole city, and any one you walk into won’t disappoint. 🏠 Stay by the lake or in the city? There are accommodations inside Sayram Lake Scenic Area with lake views right from the window, but prices are high and it’s hard to book during peak season. Bole city offers more hotel options, ranging from 200-400 RMB per night, with better value. The hot spring county has hot spring-themed hotels where you can soak in hot springs while enjoying snow mountain views. Book at least one week in advance for the July peak season. ⚠️ A few reminders Sayram Lake’s average temperature in July is 15-25°C, but there is a big temperature difference between day and night, so bring a windbreaker or light down jacket. Sun protection! Sun protection! Sun protection! The UV rays in Xinjiang are very strong. The lake road is about 100 kilometers; self-driving or chartering a car is the most flexible. Sayram Lake ticket + shuttle bus costs 245 RMB; it’s recommended to spend most of the day. July and August are peak travel seasons in Bortala; book hotels and vehicles in advance. The photos in this article are for artistic reference only; actual scenery may vary.

Finally, I understand why some people think Sayram Lake is the most beautiful place in Xinjiang, while others think "it's just a lake." After circling Sayram Lake, staying by the lake, and watching the sunrise and sunset, I finally uncovered the truth. 🔴Things to Avoid Don't just visit the East Gate, check in, and leave. Most tour groups only go to the East Gate, take a few photos, and then leave. The real essence is in the section from the South Gate to Songshutou. Don't go in the middle of the day. Direct sunlight makes the lake water glare, causing overexposed photos. After 4 PM, the light is softer, and the lake's colors are at their most vibrant. Don't stay outside the scenic area. Stay in an RV or yurt inside the scenic area to watch the stars at night and the sunrise in the morning. Not staying inside is like coming for nothing. Don't just look at the lake and not the mountains. You should climb Kegu'erqin Mountain behind it. The panoramic view of Sayram Lake from the summit is a hundred times more beautiful than from the lakeside. 🟢Heartfelt Recommendations Stay at an RV campsite by the lake. The RVs aren't big, but they have everything, and the heating is excellent. At night, open the door to a sky full of stars, with the Milky Way rising from the east, reflecting on the lake. I woke up in the middle of the night, couldn't bear to sleep, and sat outside watching for half an hour. In the morning, pull back the curtains, and the lake is calm like a mirror, with distant snow-capped mountains reflecting in the water. The sun jumps out from behind the mountains, light hitting the lake, transforming the water from deep blue to light blue, then to sapphire blue. You must walk the section from the South Gate to Songshutou. Most people crowd the observation decks, but there's no one along the lakeside on that stretch. The lake water is crystal clear, allowing you to see the stones at the bottom. Squat down and put your hand in the lake water; it's very cool. Climb Kegu'erqin Mountain. It's not high; you can reach the summit in half an hour. From the top, Sayram Lake looks like a sapphire embedded between grasslands and snow-capped mountains, with colors layering from the shore to the center: light blue, lake blue, deep blue. I sat on the mountain for a long time, feeling the wind, not wanting to leave. Guozigou Bridge is just a turn away from Sayram Lake's South Gate. Standing on the observation deck, the bridge spans the valley, with snow-capped mountains in the background and a deep gorge below. Many people take photos, but they all crowd in the same spot. Walk 100 meters further, and there's no one around. Summary: The lasting impression of Sayram Lake is the blue of its waters, the sky full of stars, and that night spent by the lake, not wanting to leave. 📌Travel Information 📍Address: Bole City, Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang 🚗Transportation: Fly to Yining or Bole, then self-drive or charter a car to circle the lake. The loop road is 90 kilometers, taking 2-3 hours at a leisurely pace. 🏨Accommodation: Stay inside the scenic area! RV campsites or yurts. Book half a month in advance during peak season to catch the sunrise and stars. 🎫Tickets: Admission is 145 RMB (includes loop bus). Self-driving cars require an additional 70 RMB per person. 📅Itinerary: Day 1: Yining → Sayram Lake East Gate → South Gate loop → Songshutou hike → Kegu'erqin Mountain → Stay by the lake. Day 2: Sunrise → Guozigou Bridge → Return trip. ✅Tips: Not staying inside the scenic area is like coming for nothing. Bring a thick jacket; it's only 5-10 degrees Celsius in the morning and evening. Sunscreen! UV rays are very strong. The best light for circling the lake is after 4 PM. 🍜Food: Arctic Char (coldwater fish) at lakeside restaurants; the fish is very tender. Minced meat noodles and handmade yogurt in Yining city. 📸Photography: Lakeside from South Gate to Songshutou has good light in the morning. Kegu'erqin Mountain summit has good light in the afternoon for panoramic lake views. Guozigou Bridge at sunset in the evening.

Liutian Lake Grassland: The Little Switzerland of the South, Stunning and No Less Than Xinjiang As a travel blogger who has traveled all over China, I always thought the beauty of Xinjiang had reached its peak—there’s the lake and mountain scenery of Kanas, the lavender seas of Ili, the three-dimensional grasslands of Kalajun, and the heart-stirring blue of Sailimu Lake. Until I came to Liutian Lake Grassland, known as the "Little Switzerland of the South," I realized that ultimate beauty can shock me again in a completely different way. First Sight: Entering a Fairyland The car wound up the winding mountain road, and when I turned the last bend, the entire Liutian Lake Grassland suddenly appeared before my eyes. At that moment, I held my breath. This is not the vast, boundless grandeur of Xinjiang where the sky meets the earth, but a delicate, picturesque, and layered beauty. The emerald green meadows spread like a huge velvet carpet from beneath my feet to the distant mountains, dotted with unknown wildflowers—purple, yellow, white—like stars scattered on earth. In the distance, dark green forests grow along the ridgeline, above which are exposed gray rocky peaks shining with a cold luster under the sunlight. All of this is reflected in the mirror-like surface of Liutian Lake. Liutian Lake: The Eye of the Grassland Liutian Lake is not large but deep enough. The water color lies between emerald and sapphire, changing with the light and cloud shadows. There are no fences by the lake, only natural grassy slopes, allowing you to walk right to the water’s edge and touch the cool, clear lake water. Locals told me that Liutian Lake is formed by high mountain snowmelt, so even in midsummer, the water temperature remains low. In the early morning, the lake is often shrouded in a thin mist, drifting like a light veil. The distant mountains and nearby grasslands appear faint and mysterious in the fog, like a fairyland. When the sun fully rises and the mist clears, the lake becomes transparent to the bottom, and you can see aquatic plants gently swaying with the current. Grassland Walk: Every Step a Scenic View Walking on Liutian Lake Grassland is a luxurious enjoyment. The meadows here are soft and springy, like walking on a natural carpet. Unlike the Xinjiang grasslands, the landscape here is more three-dimensional—you can easily experience four completely different sceneries in one day: grassland, forest, lake, and mountains. I especially love the evening when the sunset dyes the entire grassland golden, herders drive cattle and sheep home, and the sound of bells echoes through the valley. Sitting by the lake at this time, watching the light and shadow dance on the water, listening to the rustling of grass in the wind, all the city noise is filtered out, leaving only deep inner peace. Surprising Discoveries: The Unique Charm of the Little Switzerland of the South If Xinjiang’s beauty is a grand symphony, then Liutian Lake Grassland is a delicate nocturne. There is no monotonous vastness here, but surprises everywhere: · Distinct seasonal changes: wildflowers bloom in spring, lush greenery in summer, colorful forests in autumn, and silver-white winter—each season has its unique charm · Rich biodiversity: I saw many plants and birds here that I hadn’t seen on Xinjiang grasslands; the ecosystem is more complex · Strong cultural atmosphere: nearby ethnic minority villages are well preserved, offering a chance to experience southern minority cultures different from Xinjiang · Diverse hiking routes: from easy lakeside strolls to challenging mountain treks, suitable for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels Travel Tips · Best time: May to October is the best travel season; June to August for the greenest grasslands, September to October for beautiful autumn colors · Transportation: Self-driving or chartered cars are recommended; the scenery along the way is also beautiful · Accommodation: There are unique guesthouses around the grassland, or you can choose camping (must follow relevant regulations) · Essentials: Sunscreen, sunglasses, warm jacket (large temperature difference between day and night), comfortable hiking shoes · Respect nature: Please take all your trash with you, do not pick flowers or plants, and do not disturb wildlife Conclusion On the morning I left Liutian Lake Grassland, I returned to the lake once more. The morning mist arrived as expected, wrapping the entire grassland in a hazy veil. I suddenly understood that beauty is never comparative—Xinjiang has its grandeur, and Liutian Lake has its delicate charm. As travelers, we are so fortunate to continuously encounter different forms of ultimate beauty in this vast country. If you have already witnessed the vastness of Xinjiang, then come to Liutian Lake Grassland and let this "Little Switzerland of the South" amaze your eyes and soul again with its subtle and gentle beauty. Many people traveling to Xinjiang head straight for Yili or Kanas, often overlooking Tacheng on the northwestern frontier. Known as the "city of oil paintings," this place hides the most diverse landscapes in Northern Xinjiang—canyons, grasslands, wetlands, salt lakes, and desert forests. Every step reveals a new view, complemented by authentic local food and moving stories of border defense. It is a place best explored slowly, to be savored in detail. The first stop I always recommend is Anjihai Grand Canyon, also known as Red Mountain Grand Canyon. It looks as if the earth was split open by a giant axe, with layers of red, brown, green, and yellow rock strata unfolding along the river valley. The folds are intricate, and as sunlight hits, the colors on the canyon walls seem to shift. There is little artificial modification here. Standing on the cliff edge looking down, you can truly feel the majestic power left behind by millions of years of geological movement. The wind blowing through the canyon is both quiet and awe-inspiring. Continuing along the road, you reach the Barluk Mountains. In autumn, the Barluk Mountains shed their summer green, with the vast grasslands turning golden and the birch leaves yellowing, while cattle and sheep graze leisurely on the pastures. The rolling slopes, reminiscent of European highlands, are set against low-hanging clouds, making every snapshot look like an oil painting. Not far from the foot of the mountain lies the Xiaobaiyang Border Post, where the famous song "Little Poplar" was born. Standing here, gazing at the poplars standing silently on the border line and listening to the stories of the border guards, you are filled with reverence, understanding that behind this peaceful land lies the dedication of generations of border defense soldiers. Leaving the Barluk Mountains, the vast Kurustai Grassland unfolds before your eyes. As the second-largest contiguous plain grassland in the country, it lacks the steepness of alpine meadows. Instead, you find endless fields, stretches of reeds, water birds taking flight, and scattered yurts in the distance. The wind sweeps across the grass waves, carrying the scent of grass and earth. At sunset, the light spreads across the wetlands, creating a quiet and healing atmosphere. Tacheng also offers two distinct types of wilderness scenery: salt lakes and the Ganjiahu Saxaul Forest. The salt lake surface shimmers with a faint white, with salt crystals covering the shore. On sunny days, the water reflects the sky, creating a cool and pure atmosphere. The Ganjiahu Saxaul Forest National Nature Reserve is a miracle of life in the desert, where vast stretches of saxaul trees take root in the Gobi, tenaciously resisting wind and sand. Wild rabbits and birds inhabit this area, bearing witness to the power of desert ecology. After sightseeing, be sure to save time for Tacheng's food. The famous Shawan Big Plate Chicken originated in Tacheng. It features local free-range chicken paired with Anjihai chili peppers, potatoes stewed until soft, and a rich, red sauce, all served over chewy belt noodles—a spicy and satisfying bite. In autumn and winter, air-dried meat is a specialty of the herdsmen; the beef and mutton are naturally air-dried, resulting in firm, rich meat with the distinct aroma of the grasslands. The oily and fragrant lamb pilaf features rice coated in lamb fat, mixed with the subtle sweetness of carrots. Street-side bakeries offer a wide variety of treats, including leiba (Russian-style bread) and Tatar baked flatbreads, rich with the scent of wheat. The grapes from the fields are plump and sweet, and the Anjihai chili peppers are famous far and wide, serving as the soul of Big Plate Chicken and many other home-cooked dishes. The beauty of Tacheng is never just about a single type of scenery. The grandeur of the canyons, the vastness of the grasslands, the tranquility of the salt lakes, the resilience of the saxaul forests, combined with the patriotic sentiment embodied by the Xiaobaiyang Border Post and the steaming hot food on the table, all form memories unique to this border city. Only by coming here can you truly understand what a slow-paced trip in Northern Xinjiang is all about.

#repeatdestination Okay, picture this: you're driving through northwest Xinjiang, miles from anything resembling a tourist trap, and suddenly the road opens up into this alien landscape of massive granite boulders stacked and twisted like some giant played with them millions of years ago. That's Guaishiyu — Bortala's Strange Stone Valley — and I've been back three times now. Three. Let me tell you why I can't quit this place. First trip was 2022. I was road-tripping through Xinjiang with a buddy, honestly just looking for somewhere off the grid between Jinghe and Bole. We pulled over on impulse Walked in and I felt like I'd landed on Mars. These enormous weathered rocks in every shade of grey, rust, and ochre — some balanced impossibly on top of each other, others carved into wild shapes by centuries of wind. We spent the whole afternoon scrambling between them like kids. Found this natural rock arch that framed the sky perfectly. No crowds. No ticket booth. Just us and the wind. I thought, "There's no way this is real." Second visit — autumn 2023. Brought my camera this time. The golden hour light hitting those stone surfaces? Absolutely insane. Every rock face became a different painting depending on the angle. I sat on this flat-topped boulder watching the sun go down and a local Kazakh herder walked past with his horses. He stopped, we couldn't really speak each other's language, but he pointed at the rocks and smiled like he was saying, "Yeah, pretty cool, right?" We shared some dried fruit. Best sunset of my life, hands down. Third time was this spring. I went solo, just to decompress. Walked the trails slowly, paid attention to the small things — moss in the crevices, little lizards darting between stones, the way sound echoes differently in each canyon pocket. I found a spot I'd completely missed before, tucked behind a cluster of rocks, where you could just sit and hear absolutely nothing except your own breathing. That kind of silence is rare. I sat there for an hour and felt genuinely reset. What makes Guaishiyu a repeat destination? It never repeats itself. The light shifts, the weather changes the mood entirely, and every visit I discover a new corner I somehow overlooked. It's raw, it's uncrowded, and it costs basically nothing to wander around. Real question for you all: do you have a "weird" destination — something geologically strange or visually bizarre — that keeps pulling you back? Drop it below. I want to add to my list. 👇 #RepeatDestination #Guaishiyu #Bortala #XinjiangTravel #HiddenChina #StoneValley #OffTheBeatenPath

Best time: Late September – mid-October Sayram Lake is lively in summer, but quiet in autumn. The lake water is still unbelievably blue, but the surrounding grasslands have turned golden, the snow-capped mountains are clearer, and there are far fewer tourists. You can stop anywhere along the lake road, and every frame you capture looks like a desktop wallpaper. Then, on the way, visit Guozigou Bridge to see the "steel dragon" amidst the autumn colors, and soak in a hot spring in the evening. Perfect. 🗺️ 5 days 4 nights – Sayram Lake autumn slow travel D1: Urumqi → Jinghe (high-speed train). Stay at the entrance of Sayram Lake Scenic Area D2: Full day around Sayram Lake (Dianjiangtai, Swan Lake, West Sea Grassland, stunning autumn photos) D3: Sayram Lake → Guozigou Bridge → Horgos Port. Stay in Yining D4: Yining → Kazanqi Folk Custom Street → Liuxing Street. Sunset at Ili River Bridge D5: Depart from Yining (can fly to Urumqi for a connecting flight) 🔥 Highlights: Sayram Lake autumn colors + Guozigou Bridge + Yining's blue alleys + Ili River sunset. The pace is slow, perfect for relaxing. ⚠️ It is windy at Sayram Lake in autumn, so keep warm while touring the lake. Accommodation inside the scenic area is limited; we recommend staying at the scenic area entrance or in Jinghe County. 💰 Budget reference: CNY 3,500–5,000 per person (excluding major transportation) 📩 Suitable for: Couples, best friends, and those who don't want to rush but just want to watch the lake and relax. 👉 Sayram Lake in autumn is beautiful and uncrowded. Send me a private message, and I'll tell you the best photo spots.

If you're looking to experience the off-the-beaten-path wild charm of Xinjiang, Wutujing Fairy Lake is well worth a visit. Located in Jinghe, this 2-day, 1-night short off-road trip from Urumqi lets you escape the crowds and enjoy the unique romance of a wild lake. 🚙 Day 1: Depart from Urumqi before 9:00 AM and head to Jinghe by off-road vehicle, a 4–5 hour drive. After a short rest in Jinghe, continue onto the 70-kilometer off-road section. Along the way, you'll see river valleys, forests, Yardang landforms, and waterfalls. The bumpy ride is full of scenic surprises. Upon arriving at Fairy Lake, find a flat, sheltered spot on the grass by the lake to set up camp. In the evening, light a bonfire and gather around for barbecue and hot pot. As night falls, look up to see a dazzling starry sky with the Milky Way clearly visible, and soak in the tranquility of nature in the wilderness. 🌅 Day 2: Wake up at 7:30 AM—don't miss the sunrise by the lake. Morning mist swirls over the water, creating a hazy, ethereal ambiance. During the day, you can go kayaking, fly a drone for aerial shots, hike along the lakeshore to discover hidden photo spots, or simply sit by the lake to relax and clear your mind. Pack up camp between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM. Please be sure to pack out all your trash to help protect this pristine wilderness before driving back. Escape the commercial tourist spots and head to a wild lake. With off-roading, camping, stargazing, and sunrise chasing, this short trip offers a genuine experience of Xinjiang's raw and breathtaking natural scenery.

Visiting Sayram Lake now is such a pleasant surprise! The summer heat has faded, the breeze by the lake is comfortable, the grasslands are slowly turning a light yellow, and the lake water is a crystal-clear blue. There are far fewer tourists compared to the summer peak. If you catch good weather, the lake and the distant snow-capped mountains frame perfectly together—it's truly refreshing to see😍 ❄️ Clothing + temperature guide The temperature difference by the lake is quite extreme. It feels warm in the bright sun, but the moment the wind blows, it cools down instantly. Be sure to protect yourself from the wind.👇 🔹 Temperature reference: 8°C–22°C. It feels even colder in the morning and evening, and the wind by the lake is very strong 🔹 Tops: Start with a short-sleeved T-shirt as a base layer, and wear a thin windbreaker or a thicker knit cardigan over it. If you get cold easily, bring a thin down jacket to put on when it gets windy 🔹 Bottoms: Long pants are best. If you want to take photos, you can bring a long skirt, but it will be very cold when it's windy, so I don't recommend wearing one for long periods 🔹 Accessories: Sunglasses are a must—the reflection off the lake is blinding. A hat and a thin scarf are great for blocking the wind and also look good in photos📸 ✨ Spots worth stopping at by the lake Don't just stay cooped up in the car the whole time. Pick a few spots to get out and walk around; the scenery is completely different ❄️ Guozigou Bridge Viewpoint: You can overlook the bridge from here, with the valley grasslands at your feet and Sayram Lake in the distance. The view is expansive, and you can easily capture the mountains and water in one frame ❄️ Keleyongzhu: A shallow beach along the lake with large grassy areas by the water. The layers of the lake water are beautiful. You can walk to the water's edge and step on the pebbles. When the wind is calm, the lake surface looks like a mirror, which is perfect for portraits ❄️ Swan Joy (Tian'e Leshui): If you're lucky, you might see swans swimming on the water. Don't get too close; just observe from a distance. The grass and trees on the shore are turning yellow, which creates a great atmosphere against the blue lake water 💦 Sayram Lake itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Yining, wander through the local streets, try some local food, and rest up Day 2: Depart from Yining for Sayram Lake. Take a slow drive along the lake road, stopping at spots along the way, and wait for the sunset by the lake in the evening Day 3: Wake up early at Sayram Lake to see the morning mist, then head to Guozigou, and continue toward Jinghe after exploring ⚠️ Travel tips ✅ Some sections of the road around the lake are extremely windy. Don't wear clothes that are too thin. Even if the sun is out at noon, don't pack your jacket away ✅ The temperature difference between day and night by the lake is significant. Temperatures drop at night, so don't stay outside too long to avoid catching a cold ✅ Bring enough drinking water and snacks. There aren't many supply points along the lake road, and options are limited ✅ The UV rays are very strong! Even on cloudy days, the reflection off the lake can easily cause sunburn, so keep your sun protection gear with you ✅ Do not trample on the grasslands by the lake. Many areas are protected, so please stick to the boardwalks and the roadside ✅ If it gets windy or rainy, the lake will be very foggy and visibility will drop. Don't feel pressured to wait at one specific spot; just come back at a different time

Since retiring 14 years ago, I have traveled all across China, but Xinjiang and Tibet remained unfulfilled regrets in my heart. Now nearly 70, I never dared to travel far due to concerns about altitude sickness, yet the longing for the scenery of the West always lingered in my mind. My daughter understood my wish and meticulously planned an itinerary, taking the whole family to accompany me to Xinjiang. I finally fulfilled my dream at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains, encountering the magnificent grasslands up close and experiencing the unique local customs of the frontier. This trip coincided with the Dragon Boat Festival. We departed from Beijing Daxing International Airport and arrived in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, after a three-hour flight. Upon landing, our guide met us, helped us check into our hotel, and our long-awaited Xinjiang journey officially began. Considering the pace of the elderly and children in our family, we chose a comfortable and worry-free 10-day Ili loop tour. With a private car and a guide throughout the trip, we started from Urumqi, passing through Dushanzi Grand Canyon, Jinghe, Sayram Lake, Guozigou Bridge, Yining, Xiata, Zhaosu, Qiongkushitai, Tekes, Gongliu, Qiaxi National Forest Park, and Nalati, before finally returning to Urumqi via the Duku Highway. We flexibly adjusted the route based on the similarity of the scenery, making the travel experience more comfortable and pleasant. The 10-day trip to the West was full of scenery, insights, and rewards. The landscapes of Xinjiang are truly breathtaking. The magnificent Dushanzi Grand Canyon, the crystal-clear Sayram Lake, the grand Guozigou Bridge, and the Duku Highway, where every step offers a new view—mountains, lakes, grasslands, and ancient villages complement each other. The scenery is stunning and picturesque, with every spot being highly photogenic; any photo taken is a beautiful shot. However, hidden risks lie beneath this great beauty. The mountain weather is unpredictable, with sunshine, rain, and snow changing in an instant. During this trip, we encountered sudden weather changes three times, narrowly avoiding risks from storms and hail, which still makes me shudder when I think about it. It also made me realize that when visiting mountain scenery, one must always pay attention to weather changes and take timely precautions in case of severe weather. Xinjiang is rich in produce and fragrant with fruits, with countless fresh fruits, vegetables, and local flavors along the way. It is worth noting that local prices are calculated by the kilogram. During the trip, you can buy and taste them on the spot without needing to stock up. You can also have your favorite local specialties mailed home via e-commerce, which is very convenient. For this family trip, the private car and guide arrangement was particularly suitable, as it fully accommodated the pace of the elderly and children, offering freedom and comfort far superior to regular group tours. At the same time, I truly felt that the cost of tourism in Xinjiang is relatively high, especially the expenses for hotel accommodation. Travelers planning to visit are advised to prepare their budgets in advance. This trip to Xinjiang fulfilled my long-held dream of the West. Beautiful Xinjiang, with its healing scenery and warm, unforgettable local customs, has become the most precious and memorable memory of my later years of travel.

1️⃣ Quanzhou|Fujian In Quanzhou during the Mid-Autumn Festival, it's still summer during the day, with autumn colors only appearing in the evening. For Qingyuan Mountain, it's recommended to go early, before 7 am. There will be almost no one at Lao Jun Rock, and the morning light will bathe the stone statue in a warm yellow glow. From the summit, you can overlook the old town, with its rows of red-brick houses. The sea breeze blowing in from the Jinjiang River estuary is cooler than air conditioning. When descending, don't go through the main gate; take the path around Qianshou Rock. Along the way, you can see several cliff carvings, their inscriptions faded but still recognizable, including Zhu Xi's inscription "Jiuri Mountain". Visit Kaiyuan Temple in the afternoon; the shadows of the East and West Pagodas will be very long. Sit under the ancient banyan tree for a while, and you can hear the copper bells ringing from the eaves. Chongwu Ancient City is an hour's drive from the city center. It's recommended to stay in one of the stone house guesthouses by the sea and watch the sunset from the city wall in the evening. The fishing boats returning to port and the lights coming on one by one is ten times more beautiful than during the day. ⚠️ The few "old-brand" ginger duck stalls near the Quanzhou Tianhou Temple are a bit pricey for tourists. Locals prefer the one at the end of Xinmen Street, where the duck is braised until tender, and one serving is enough for two. 🍜 Be sure to add vinegared pork and fried egg to the rice noodle soup, and pair it with fried dough sticks. The street stalls are most delicious around midnight. 2️⃣ Nanning|Guangxi Nanning is still 30 degrees Celsius during the Mid-Autumn Festival, so don't expect autumn. However, the humid heat with the aroma of fruit is quite pleasant. Enter Qingxiu Mountain around 4 PM when the sun is less intense. Walk along the trail to Guanyin Temple, where you'll see bougainvillea and mango trees hanging from the branches. From the mountaintop platform, you can see the Yong River turning, and the city unfolds below. The evening light is perfect for portrait photography. Fubo Temple is in Hengxian County, two hours from the city center. The temple isn't large, but it's quiet. The incense is continuously burned by locals, and there are very few tourists. If you only have three days, I recommend staying near Chaoyang Square. There are many subway stations nearby, and you can walk to Zhongshan Road Night Market in the evening. ⚠️ The sightseeing bus at Qingxiu Mountain stops running at 5:30 PM, so don't stay out too late. 🍜 For Lao You Fen (a type of rice noodle soup), I recommend Shu Ji. The pickled bamboo shoots are cooked to perfection, the broth is rich, and a bowl costs 12 yuan, which is more affordable than those trendy chain stores. People in Nanning like to burn pomelo peels to repel mosquitoes during the Mid-Autumn Festival; the streets are filled with the smell of pomelo peels and incense, which is quite pleasant. If you're traveling with children, you can visit the moonlit lantern festival at Nanhu Park, a popular spot for locals to stroll. It's free, and the atmosphere is more authentic than tourist attractions. 3️⃣ Tonghua|Jilin Autumn comes early to Tonghua. By the Mid-Autumn Festival, the maple leaves on the mountains are already 30% red, so you'll need a light jacket in the mornings and evenings. The Goguryeo relics and historical sites around Ji'an city are most worth seeing: the General's Tomb and the Stele of King Gwanggaeto. These stone-built royal tombs stand silently amidst cornfields, their timeless grandeur more awe-inspiring than any museum. It's recommended to visit the General's Tomb first in the morning, when the sidelight illuminates the stone walls, highlighting the intricate textures. In the afternoon, visit Wandu Mountain City; a walk along the city wall offers views of the Yalu River across the river. Don't have high expectations for the rapeseed flower fields in Ji'an; by Mid-Autumn Festival, they've already passed their peak bloom, leaving only a few scattered patches of yellow-green. However, the open space is perfect for cycling, with the scent of rice wafting in the air. ⚠️ Buses from Ji'an to Tonghua city are infrequent, mostly stopping after 3 PM. Driving is more convenient. For accommodation, it's recommended to stay in Ji'an city, close to the historical sites. In the evenings, you can enjoy grilled pollack by the river with ice-cold beer; the autumn evenings are cool, but the charcoal fire warms you up quickly. 🏠 If you want to see autumn foliage, head to Baijifeng National Forest Park, a half-hour drive away. Mid-Autumn Festival coincides with the early blooming of autumn leaves, so it's less crowded and perfect for a stroll. 4️⃣ Bijie|Guizhou Zhijin Cave is the kind of place you'll never forget after just one visit. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 16 degrees Celsius; even though it's still hot outside during Mid-Autumn Festival, entering the cave feels like stepping into a natural air-conditioned room. The entire walk takes about 40 minutes. The path is slippery, so wear non-slip shoes and avoid sandals. The stalactites inside the cave are illuminated like a crystal palace, but it's more understated than commercialized caves, without flashy projection shows. ⚠️ Tickets for Zhijin Cave must be booked online one day in advance. Buying tickets on-site is risky, especially during holidays. The Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area isn't in bloom this season, but the Baili Rhododendron Grass Sea in September presents a different scene altogether. The buckwheat flowers along the grassland create a vast expanse of pink and white, rippling like waves in the wind. Weining Caohai Lake is best visited in the evening. At sunset, the lake surface is bathed in gold, and migratory birds begin to gather. By Mid-Autumn Festival, you can already see the first batch of red-billed gulls. For accommodation, I recommend staying in Qianxi city proper. It's centrally located near Zhijin Cave and Baili Rhododendron Scenic Area, hotels are inexpensive, and it's convenient to eat hot pot. 🍜 You absolutely must try Bijie's hot pot! Potato cakes, stinky tofu, and pork belly sizzle on a hot plate, dipped in chili powder, and paired with a bottle of wildflower yogurt to cool down the spiciness. If you enjoy photography, there are several viewing platforms along the lakeside road of Caohai Lake; the light is best half an hour before sunset. 5️⃣ Shaoxing|Zhejiang In Shaoxing, the Mid-Autumn Festival is filled with the fragrance of osmanthus; you can smell it just a few steps away in the old town. I suggest visiting Lu Xun's Former Residence, Chenyuan Garden, in the evening. Most of the tourists have left, the cicadas in the Hundred Herbs Garden have stopped chirping, and the garden is quiet, just like it's described in books. Chenyuan Garden offers evening performances of Yue Opera, and around the Mid-Autumn Festival, there are special moon-viewing performances. Sitting by the lotus pond listening to "The Phoenix Hairpin," with the fragrance of osmanthus in the breeze, is quite delightful. Lanting is in the suburbs; it's less crowded in the morning. The white geese in the goose pond are more energetic than the tourists. Free guided tours are available at the winding stream, every half hour. Anchang Ancient Town is more authentic than the ancient towns in Keqiao. Along the river street, sausages and braised duck hang under the eaves. Mid-Autumn Festival is the season for braised goods; buy a piece of sausage to eat on the go—it tastes better than the platters in restaurants. ⚠️ Lanting is less crowded on Mondays, but the guides are also off. Avoid Mondays if you want a guided tour. For accommodation, I recommend staying near the former residence of the Calligrapher Sage. The small guesthouses in the old streets and alleys are inexpensive, and you can walk right to Tishan Bridge and Duopo Alley. At night, there are no tourists, and the moonlight shining on the bluestone slabs is very atmospheric. 🚄 A taxi from Shaoxing North Railway Station to the old city costs about 25 yuan and takes about half an hour. 6️⃣ Bortala | Xinjiang It's already getting cold around Sayram Lake during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The wind is strong by the lake, so a windproof jacket or light down jacket is essential. But the lake water at this time is an unreal blue, deeper and more profound than in summer, with the snow-capped mountains reflected in crystal-clear water. I recommend driving around the lake; it's about 50 kilometers long, allowing for plenty of time to stop and take photos, and half a day is just right. The Songshutou hiking trail at the South Gate is worth climbing; from the top, the lake looks like a sapphire embedded in the mountains. Anjihai Grand Canyon is in the Jinghe County direction. It's a detour from Sayram Lake, but worth it. The canyon's texture resembles cracks in the earth; the drone view is the most breathtaking, and portraits taken from the cliff edge are also very photogenic. Wenquan County is 40 minutes from Sayram Lake. Soaking in a natural hot spring is a great way to relax. On Mid-Autumn Festival night, there was already frost in the mountains; soaking in the hot water while watching the stars is incredibly therapeutic. ⚠️ Accommodation within the Sayram Lake scenic area is expensive and basic. It's recommended to stay in Wenquan County or Jinghe County, where prices differ by more than half. 🍜 The baked buns at the "Tarim Restaurant" in Jinghe County have thin crusts and generous fillings, costing only three yuan each. Make it your first meal after leaving the scenic area! 7️⃣ Dandong|Liaoning Mid-Autumn Festival in Dandong is the peak season for seafood. Be sure to try the yellow clams and swimming crabs. It's recommended to visit the Yalu River Broken Bridge in the evening when the lights come on, creating a striking contrast between the two sides of the bridge. The entrance fee is 30 yuan, and a walk around the bridge takes about 20 minutes. The river breeze is cool in the evening, so bring a jacket. Phoenix Mountain is located in Fengcheng City, just a short high-speed train ride from Dandong city. The mountain is very steep, with the Laoniubei section almost vertical; those with a fear of heights should proceed with caution. However, the view from the summit is worthwhile, offering views of the entire Sino-North Korean border. In autumn, the maple leaves on the mountain turn a beautiful red. Kuandian River Estuary is the closest point to view North Korea. A boat trip on the river will allow you to see guard posts and patrols on the opposite bank; just take photos from a distance and avoid shouting. Lüjiang Village is located deep within Kuandian, a two-hour drive away. During Mid-Autumn Festival, the rice paddies turn golden, and the sunset over the river is breathtaking. However, accommodation in the village is basic, so a day trip is recommended. ⚠️ The mountain roads from Dandong to Kuandian are winding; novice drivers should be cautious and bring motion sickness medication. 🍜 "Master Zhang's Ginseng Chicken Soup" in Dandong Old Street features a whole chicken stewed until the meat falls off the bone, with ginseng and glutinous rice in the soup. It costs 38 yuan and will warm you up all night. 8️⃣ Heihe|Heilongjiang Mid-Autumn Festival in Heihe is already quite cold, with temperatures near freezing in the mornings and evenings; a down jacket is perfectly appropriate. Wudalianchi has very few tourists at this time of year, making the scenic area almost deserted. Laoheishan Crater is worth climbing; it takes about 40 minutes to reach the top, offering panoramic views of the volcanic cone and the lava plateau below. The black volcanic rocks covered in golden moss create a striking contrast. Beiyinquan Spring's mineral water is naturally carbonated; bring a water bottle to fill up, as it tastes best when drunk on-site, otherwise it will lose its carbonated state. Wenbo Scenic Area is best visited in the afternoon; the lake water is crystal clear, and the underwater volcanic deposits shimmer in the sunlight. ⚠️ The attractions in Wudalianchi are scattered, making it difficult to navigate without a car. Self-driving or hiring a car is recommended; a car hire costs around 300 yuan per day. Stay in Yaoquan Town, which is close to all the attractions. In the evening, you can soak in the volcanic hot springs. Soaking in the hot springs while stargazing on Mid-Autumn Festival night is particularly comfortable, with the alternating hot and cold water. 🍜 Locally, try the fish stew, especially Lianchi fish stewed with tofu. The fish is tender, the broth is rich, and it's served with cornbread. A meal costing around 50 yuan per person is enough to fill you up. Heihe has a stronger border feel than Dandong, with Blagoveshchensk, Russia, right across the river. At night, you can see the lights on the opposite bank from the riverbank, and it's quieter than I imagined. The Mid-Autumn Festival is three days long, not too long, not too short. Pick a place you haven't been to before, buy a ticket, and go! Which one appeals to you the most? Let's chat in the comments. 1️⃣ Quanzhou|Fujian In Quanzhou during the Mid-Autumn Festival, it's still summer during the day, only showing signs of autumn in the evening. For Qingyuan Mountain, it's recommended to go early, before 7 am. There's almost no one at Lao Jun Rock, and the morning light gives the stone statue a warm yellow hue. Buckwheat flowers bloom in a sea of pink and white along the shore, creating waves in the wind. Weining Grass Sea is best visited in the evening; the lake surface is gilded at sunset, migratory birds begin to gather, and by Mid-Autumn Festival, the first red-billed gulls can be seen.
