2024 Kagoshima Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
Kagoshima Prefecture (鹿儿岛县) is located at the southernmost tip of the island of Kyushu in Japan. The most famous attraction in the region is the active volcano Sakurajima, which still gives off smoke to this day. Another unique feature of Kagoshima is the Ibusuki Onsen hot springs. With its 600-kilometer coastline, Kagoshima has become a popular vacation spot.

1️⃣Shiroyama Park: Sakurajima Volcano is wearing a white hat, and you can't see the 🌋 panorama, but you can wait for the sunset afterglow, and the whole city is covered with a 🌆 golden veil. 2️⃣Sengan-en:
The best viewpoint of Sakurajima Volcano▶️Sakura Garden, mountains and seas, green trees, and the city train shuttles through it, the scenery is beautiful. It's best to come here early in the morning, there are fewer people and it's good to stroll around, and then have lunch at Sakura Garden.

Kagoshima Travel|7 things I must do when I come to Kagoshima.
Kagoshima City is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture, the southernmost part of the Kyushu region. It is not a tourist destination in Japan, but you can actually spend a day to experience the charm of this slow-paced city.
-
❶ View Sakurajima from the Shiroyama Park Observation Deck
❷Tour around the city on the Kagoshima City Tram
❸Try the super-famous Kagoshima black pork cutlet rice - Takuya Kawakaku
❹ Check out the super popular Shirokuma shaved ice
❺Purchase Kagoshima specialty—かるかん(軽羹)
❻Find your favorite coffee shop in the alley near Tenmonkan Station and enjoy the afternoon
❼Go to the かごっまふるさと屋台村 and have a drink and eat some local snacks
-
🌟Tips
①Suica cannot be used on Kagoshima City. If you do not have a local transportation card, you can only get off the bus and insert coins or use a credit card. One way is 160 yen.
② Kawajiu needs to make a reservation. Enter your mobile phone number on the machine at the entrance of the store to make a reservation.
③かるかん recommends Akashiya’s. It’s like the rice cakes I ate when I was a kid. It’s lightly sweet and super delicious! Available both inside and outside the station, but the shelf life is very short
④There are two major stations in Kagoshima. Kagoshima Station is convenient to Shiroyama Park and the Aquarium. Kagoshima Chuo Station is convenient to take the Shinkansen. Both stations are connected by JR.
⑤Everyone has to order one portion of Shirokuma Shaved Ice. The normal size is for 1 to 2 people (a very big portion), so just order the baby size.
⑥The Seal of the Hundred Castles of Kagoshima Castle is in the [Aimeikan] at the foot of the mountain, but the Aimeikan is closed on Mondays. You can also go to the [Kagoshima Castle Seal] near Central Park, and you can also buy the castle seal.
Kagoshima Five-Day Four-Night Travel Guide
Kagoshima recommends Kirishima, Ibusuki, and Sakurajima.
🎏 Day 1 and the morning of Day 2: Ibusuki (Pictures 1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣4️⃣5️⃣6️⃣)
🚂 Departing from Kagoshima Chuo Station, you can take the black and white Ibusuki no Tamatebako train (Picture 14), which runs three times a day, all reserved seats, and requires advance reservation. The train offers limited edition black and white puddings. On the train, the black side has views of the mountains, and the white side has views of the sea, which is quite unique.
It is recommended to stay near Ibusuki Station, where there are buses, electric bicycle rentals, and taxis.
Ibusuki recommends visiting Chiringashima, Lake Ikeda, and Nagasakibana Shrine.
☀️ Chiringashima is an uninhabited island that emerges in Kinko Bay, isolated from the world. A sand bridge about 800 meters long appears on the sea surface connecting the island to the mainland for a few short hours before low tide, which is interesting. It is safe to walk on it only from March to October during low tide, and it takes about 20 minutes on foot to reach Chiringashima. The island largely retains its original natural ecology.
🌄 The sunset at Nagasakibana is very beautiful, but the last bus to Nagasakibana leaves at around 3 PM (Picture 6️⃣), which is a bit early for sunset viewing. The nearest train station to Nagasakibana is Nishi-Oyama Station, 18 minutes from Ibusuki Station, but there is no transportation from Nishi-Oyama Station to Nagasakibana, and it takes about an hour on foot. One option is to take a taxi round trip, another is to rent an electric bicycle at Ibusuki Station.
🎏 Afternoon of Day 2 and morning of Day 3: Kirishima (Pictures 7️⃣8️⃣)
Kirishima is very beautiful, especially during the cherry blossom season, with cherry trees all along the way. The hot springs here are also famous. Kirishima Shrine is a must-visit for its beauty and atmosphere, and it is recommended to go there before 8 AM. (For more about Kirishima and Kirishima Shrine, please refer to my previous notes)
🎏 Afternoon of Day 3 and Day 4: Sakurajima (Pictures 9~13)
Sakurajima is Japan's most active volcano, only four kilometers away from Kagoshima, so it is recommended to stay near Kagoshima Chuo Station on the nights of Day 3 and Day 4. From the port of Kagoshima City, take the ferry to Sakurajima, which runs every 20 minutes and takes 20 minutes for the whole journey. ⚠️ No ticket is needed for the ferry to Sakurajima; just board the ferry, and pay upon arrival at Sakurajima Port, where change machines are available. The return trip is paid at Sakurajima Port before boarding.
Upon arriving at Sakurajima, get a Chinese version of the 'Sakurajima Area Map' (Picture 13) at the information center, and you can also buy a sightseeing bus ticket, a one-day pass for 500 yen, with hop-on hop-off privileges. The bus's highest point is 'Yunohira Observatory' (Pictures 11 and 12), and I highly recommend the 'Lava Coast Walking Trail' (Pictures 9️⃣🔟), which is less crowded and offers views of large black volcanic rocks by the sea🪨, very impressive. Not far from the trail, there is also a free foot bath to enjoy.
🎏 On the evening of Day 4, you can visit Kagoshima Chuo Station (end of the pictures), where there are plenty of restaurants and shopping.
Summer in Kagoshima
Kagoshima, a seaside city on Japan's Kyushu Island, is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture. It's best known for Sakurajima, an active volcano that faces Kinko Bay. At its base, the Nagisa Lava Trail winds through lava fields filled with boulders. Once set on an isolated island, the volcano became connected to the Osumi Peninsula after an eruption in 1914.
It’s quite easy to walk down to the ferry terminal and get on the boat to Sakurajima. No ticket required - just pay when you exit the boat. The island is populated despite consisting largely of an active volcano. There was an ash cloud above the volcano and it was belching smoke. We could see the ash on the ground where the rains had washed it into puddles. There’s a city bus that runs a loop to a few stops around town. It was cash only (no IC card) unless you buy the one day pass for ¥500. Enter the bus at the back and pay as you exit. There are shops selling fruits and souvenirs - Sakurajima is known for its satsuma mandarins. There are some nice parks, the longest in japan foot bath and some nice hikes.

Black pork hot pot and kakigōri are a perfect match. In Kagoshima, black pork hot pot is a well-known dish, and we have selected a restaurant highly praised by local people. The main ingredients of hot pot are beef and mutton, but black pork is preferred in Kagoshima. Very fresh, it is cooked instantly after being dipped in boiling water. It's tasty and not at all chewy.
Many tour buses are painted with cute patterns. Chinese ocean liners en-route to Japan berth at Kagoshima, so the wharf is full of life. The nearby aquarium is also popular among visitors. Statues of Saigō Takamori and Ōkubo Toshimichi can also be found here. Saigō Takamori was a warrior, soldier, and politician from the Satsuma Domain during the late Edo period. He is praised as one of the "three heroes of the Meiji restoration".
There are group statues of Meiji restoration figures around the square. Kagoshima offers many attractions, including the planetarium and Senganen Garden. You can get here by sightseeing car or bus. A single ticket is YEN190, and a day ticket is YEN600. It is recommended to choose an all-day tour bus ticket, as you can see all attractions in a day.
In Senganen Garden of Kagoshima, you can admire Sakurajima. Kinkowan Park is known for gardens of view borrowing. Senganen Garden also goes viral for it is the shooting location of the full-length historical TV play series - Atsuhime. You have to have a seat in Starbucks because you can admire volcanoes and enjoy a cup of coffee at the same time. It seems you are in a secluded world. The surroundings near the mountain and by Sakurajima, so you can't help slowing down and enjoy yourself.
At the shopping mall, I found Kagoshima specialties such as black pork and Kagoshima shochu (sweet potato is very popular, so shochu also has this distinctive flavor)."Daikon" refers to the local white radish.
Southernmost Railway Station in Japan. The happy mailbox in Kaimondake is in Nishi-Oyama Station of Kagoshima. On the platform you can see Kaimondake, one of one hundred famous mountains in Japan. Gallant sight welcomes many tourists each year. You can put emails of happiness into yellow mailbox and send blessings to your dearest love.
The tram network connects all tourist spots in #kagoshima town including antique tram which made riding one's is fun and interesting too #kyushu #japan

Xian Yan Yuan, also known as the Rock Garden, is a representative Japanese courtyard.
was built in Jiayong 5 years (1658), was the residence of Jin Qibin, the main island of Satsuma. Since the completion of the construction, the masters of all generations have repaired them. At the time of the 28th generation, there was a modern factory group, which is an important testimony of the Meiji Restoration.
Xianyanyuan draws on a lot of Chinese garden architecture skills in terms of construction style and art. Although the buildings in Xianyan Garden are mainly Japanese style, the most praised place is the Chinese garden. The traditional "borrowing scene" approach has made Sakurajima volcano her reliance, and Jinjiang Bay seems to be an extension of its pool spring, making this traditional garden full of pride, making the landscape in the park seem infinite, artificial and natural reconciliation People are amazing.
There are many hot spring resources on Kagoshima, but most of them are mainly mixed baths for men and women, that is, all men and women are naked and bathing, and some need to be surrounded by bath towels. Since many Chinese people may not be accustomed to this method, including me, they chose a hot spring where men and women are separated. The
hot spring is divided into indoor and outdoor parts. The indoor part includes bubble hot springs, steamed Chinese medicine, and hot springs that can lie in the water. There are only two pools outside, one is warm and one is cold. Basically, it takes 40 minutes to get cool and cool, or go straight into the cold pool.
The hot springs here are not sulphurous, which is much better than many domestic hot springs. However, the embarrassing thing is that when I was completely naked, the big sister at the front desk came in. And the other party is extremely calm. She came in and handed the bag to everyone for a wet towel. It is worth noting that some tattoo people are not allowed to take hot springs.
A hot spring in the winter, it doesnt feel like its great.

A Day Trip to Sakurajima Volcano in Kagoshima
You can see the towering volcano right from the Sakurajima ferry terminal!
The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes.
This time, the travel route is Yunohira Observatory - Karasujima Observatory - Lava Coast Walking Trail - Lava Park Foot Bath - Tsukiyomi Shrine.
The view from Yunohira Observatory is excellent, allowing you to quietly enjoy the Sakurajima Volcano.
You can also get a distant view of Kagoshima from above.
Since I wanted to walk the Lava Coast Walking Trail, I chose to get off at Karasujima Observatory and walk all the way to the ferry terminal, which takes about 40 minutes.
However, walking along the coast is very pleasant, with very few people, making it perfect for daydreaming.
Seeing the foot bath means you've reached the end of the trail~~ You can relax with a foot bath!
But I think it would be even more beautiful to walk around sunset.
If you plan to take a day trip to Sakurajima, it is recommended to buy a day pass that includes the ferry.
Just taking the round-trip ferry and three Sakurajima buses is worth the ticket price! You can continue to use it when you return to Kagoshima, and there are also discounts on admission to several attractions, which is very cost-effective.

Top 3 Must-Eat Foods in Kagoshima
When you come to Kagoshima, you must try the local delicacies! Black pork shabu-shabu, nagashi somen, and shirokuma shaved ice are all must-eats!
Black Pork Dishes
Kagoshima black pork was introduced from Ryukyu about 400 years ago, and has since taken root in Kagoshima, becoming a local culinary treasure. Since the Edo period, black pork has been a representative of Japan's top pork, and has always been popular with diners.
When you come to Kagoshima, you must not miss black pork shabu-shabu. Carefully pick up a thin slice of meat with chopsticks, put it in the soup base, shake it left and right a few times, and the meat will change color. Pick up the cooked meat slices, dip them in a little Kagoshima black vinegar, and put them in your mouth. The meat is fragrant and slightly sweet, which is very touching.
The feed for black pigs is the nutritious Satsuma sweet potato, a specialty of Kagoshima. Such green feed makes the black pork delicious and safe.
Nagashi Somen
If you want to eat delicious nagashi somen, you can choose the Ibusuki City Tangsen Gorge Nagashi Somen. The noodles are cooked and chilled in the cool underground spring water, then picked up and dipped in soy sauce-flavored sauce, which is very delicious.
And don't think this is just a summer delicacy. Tangsen Gorge is warm in winter and cool in summer, and even in winter, people come here for it, so it is popular all year round. When you come to Kagoshima, remember to try this delicious dish.
Opening hours: 10:00–17:00
Address: 5967, Kaimon Juccho, Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture
Transportation: About 26 minutes on foot from Kaimon Station
Shirokuma Shaved Ice
Shirokuma is a famous ice dessert in Kagoshima, and you must go to Mujyaki in Tenmonkan to eat it. Shirokuma offers many options, and if you don't know where to start, try the classic one. Soft and delicate shaved ice is drizzled with secret milk and honey, and then buried with preserved fruits, prunes, three-color agar, honey beans, and a variety of seasonal fruits. The rich content and bright colors make a cute polar bear jump into the bowl.
Take a spoonful and put it in your mouth, and the sweetness immediately fills your mouth. The unprecedented delicacy makes you think of the powder snow in winter.
Opening hours: 11:00–22:00 (last order at 21:30)
Address: 5-8-1F, Sennichicho, Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture
Transportation:
[Tram] Get off at Tenmonkan, about 3 minutes on foot

Take a Ferry to Active Volcano Sakurajima from Kagoshima!
One of the places I always wanted to visit was Sakurajima because a band I used to listen to had a song themed around it.
You can reach the island in about 15 minutes by ferry from Kagoshima.
