Kalmar — The Swedish Town Where a Renaissance Castle Meets the Baltic and History Lives in Every
Sweden has Stockholm and Gothenburg. But on the southeast coast lies a town that was once the key to the kingdom. Kalmar is a small city of cobblestone streets, a magnificent Renaissance castle, and a cathedral that has watched over the Baltic for centuries. The sea is near. The history is deep. Here is how to explore this hidden Swedish gem and save money with Trip.com.
1. The Castle at Dawn: Stone and Sea
Kalmar Castle rises from the water's edge, its towers and turrets reflected in the moat. By 10 AM, the tour groups fill the courtyards. Come at 6:30 AM instead. The light is soft. The stone glows. You will walk around the castle walls with only the sound of gulls and the distant lapping of waves. It feels like stepping into a Renaissance painting.
Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Kalmar. It shows you the quietest routes around the castle and the hidden viewpoints. The best photos are from the park across the moat at sunrise, when the castle glows golden.
2. The Old Town: Cobblestones and History
Kalmar's old town is a maze of narrow streets, colorful houses, and hidden courtyards. The buildings date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Walk slowly. The details are everywhere — carved doors, iron signs, and flowers in the windows. It is a living museum of Swedish history.
Money Hack: The old town is free to walk. Skip the expensive guided tours. Pick up a map from the tourist office and explore on your own. Check Trip.com for a "Kalmar Walking Tour" that includes the old town and the cathedral. The guide shares stories of the Kalmar Union and the town's role in Swedish history.
3. The Cathedral: A Masterpiece of Light
Kalmar Cathedral was built in the 17th century and is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Sweden. The interior is bright and airy, with light streaming through tall windows. The altar is magnificent. Come in the afternoon. The light is golden, and the church is peaceful.
Budget Advice: The cathedral is free to enter. Skip the expensive guided tours. Sit in the pews and absorb the atmosphere. Check Trip.com for a "Kalmar Cathedral Tour" that includes the crypt and the tower. The guide explains the history and the symbolism of the architecture.
4. Food That Tastes Like the Coast
Swedish coastal food is fresh and simple. Try Sill — pickled herring, served with potatoes and sour cream. Order Fiskgratäng — a creamy fish casserole. And do not miss Kanelbulle — Swedish cinnamon buns, best from a local bakery.
Where to Eat: Skip the expensive restaurants near the castle. Walk into the old town and find Kullzénska Caféet or Restaurang Larmgatan, where locals eat. The food is fresh, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a cup of local coffee when you book through the app.
Where to Stay?
Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the old town. Look for something on Larmgatan or near the cathedral. You will sleep in a colorful house with a view of the castle, the sound of gulls at dawn, and the scent of the sea. The evenings are quiet, and the stars are bright.
Conclusion:
Kalmar is not a place you rush through. It is a place you breathe in. It is a town of stone and sea, of castles and cathedrals. It is a place where the past is present in every wall. Sweden is a country of design and nature, but Kalmar is its historic soul. Come and walk the castle grounds at dawn. The Baltic is waiting.

Something We Share (the Delaware River) The Tall Ship Kalmar Nykel at the Bristol PA Wharf headed upriver toward Morrisville. The Kalmar Nykel is the Tall Ship of Delaware based in Wilmington Delaware.
This is a reproduction of a Swedish ship that brought Swedish settlers to North America in 1638 to establish the colony of New Sweden in what is now Delaware.
The Swedes mapped out the Delaware River as far north as the Falls of the Delaware, present day Morrisville PA. The Dutch had traders in this area as early as the 1650's. When William Penn came in 1682 he found 13 settlers already on farms on the west bank of the river where he intended to settle. These farms were bought from the Governor of New York in 1677. Early history in Morrisville's backyard!
