I climbed the Bokor Hill Station plateau in Phnom Bokor National Park, and it turned out to be one of the most powerful experiences I've had in the country. The altitude is about 1,000 meters. The observation points are right on the cliff. Below is endless jungle, beyond is the Gulf of Thailand, and on a clear day, you can even make out the silhouette of the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc. Standing on the rocky edge, you literally see Cambodia ending and another country beginning. The park boasts preserved buildings from the French colonial era. Abandoned buildings, old stone pagodas, and stupas—all part of the history of Bokor Hill Station, once an elite mountain resort. Now it offers a strange combination: silence, wind, and architecture that has endured for decades. A special highlight is the Lok Yeay Mao Monument. A huge white statue of the region's patron goddess towers over the mountains and sea. Visible from afar, it seems to guard the entire region. Nearby are active temples, and I found myself praying in one of them. A monk, local residents, and frescoes on the walls—a moment when tourism retreats and real life remains. On the way to the mountains, I stopped at Brateak Krola Lake (Secret Lake)—calm water, water lilies, and complete silence. Inside the park, you'll find waterfalls, including Popokvil Waterfall (especially powerful in season). The stone cascades amidst the greenery add contrast to the panoramas from the cliff. This region is located in Kampot Province, and many travelers overlook it. But it's here that Cambodia reveals a different character—not hot and chaotic, but cool, elevated, and almost meditative. If you're planning a trip to the south of the country, be sure to include Phnom Bokor National Park. Allow at least half a day, preferably more. Bokor National Park in southern Cambodia is a sprawling natural area atop a mountain. Easily accessible from the coastal town of Kampot, it makes for a perfect day trip. Personally, I highly recommend renting a motorbike for the journey. The route winds up a mountain road, offering ever-changing landscapes along the way. The breeze is refreshing, making the ride itself incredibly enjoyable. Originally developed as a summer retreat during the French colonial period, Bokor National Park is still home to an old church and an abandoned hotel. This slightly eerie atmosphere adds a fascinating touch to the experience. Even more famous, however, is the breathtaking view near the summit. On a clear day, you can see all the way across the ocean. And what amazed me the most was being able to spot Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island. It was so far away that I couldn't help but wonder, "Is that really Phu Quoc?", leaving a lasting impression. At an elevation of roughly 1,000 meters, the air is noticeably cooler than down in Kampot. Mist frequently rolls in, creating a magical and surreal landscape if you catch it at the right time. It’s a fantastic place to experience Cambodia’s "mountain nature," a stark contrast to its coastal vibes. A small and easily accessible waterfall in Bokor National Park. I visited in late December, and the water level was low, but it was still pretty cool. I walked along the usual water flow, and you can probably walk right into the center of the river when the water level is high, which is quite impressive. But even so, it's beautiful.
