Winter Exclusive|Tanzan Shrine in the Snow
If you've seen Tanzan Shrine after a snowfall, you'll understand why I say—there's no need to squeeze into crowded parks in Nara during winter.
📍 Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, hides a winter secret that breathes
That day, I stood on the mountain path, with the wind as the only background music 🎐. The moment the thirteen-storied pagoda emerged from the snowy mist felt like traveling back to ancient Nara a thousand years ago. Visitors? None. The entire forested mountain was yours alone.
❄️ What makes Tanzan Shrine in winter truly different?
Here, the snow is not just a scenic feature; it’s sacred. The vermilion buildings are half-covered by soft white snow, and the stone steps look like a silver carpet. No queues for photos, no snack stalls calling out, just you and a storytelling mountain.
✨ Winter-exclusive divine scenes
- Thirteen-storied Pagoda × Snow Accumulation: A wallpaper-worthy impact, the pagoda’s tip holding a thin layer of snow, like something out of an ink painting
- Marshmallows on the Torii Gates: Each gate topped with uniquely shaped snow caps, a cure for perfectionists
- Ice Crystal Forest: The cold mist wraps the cedar trees into crystal sculptures, every breath filled with the fresh scent of pine needles
📷 Shutter won’t stop clicking
Scenic shots, emotional portraits, atmospheric empty frames... even the bare branches look beautiful here. The only downside is your fingers freezing before you can press the shutter.
🚃 The effort to reach this secret spot
Kintetsu/JR Sakurai Station → Bus in front of the station → Tanzan Shrine stop → 15-minute walk (uphill + mountain path)
⚠️ Special winter reminders
Bus schedules are irregular and may stop running during snowfall; icy mountain paths are truly slippery, so don’t rush—walk slowly.
🧤 Essential gear checklist
✔️ Non-slip shoes (a must! Ordinary shoes will retire on the spot)
✔️ Touchscreen gloves (don’t let your hands go bare if you want to take photos)
✔️ Warm jacket (the mountaintop feels at least 5℃ colder than the city)
✔️ Thermos (nearby vending machines hibernate in winter)
🎫 Tickets & Timing
Winter is the regular worship season, with no nighttime lighting (but the snow itself glows). It’s best to climb before noon and start descending by 3 PM, as the mountain path becomes more dangerous after dark.
💭 Who is this for?
For those who have visited Nara’s parks and fed the deer, for those who avoid popular spots and prefer off-the-beaten-path routes, for those who want to find a moment of silence in the snow.
This is not a check-in spot; it’s the answer to winter.

A Must-Visit for Autumn Leaves in Nara! Stunning Red Leaf Secret Spot • Tanzan Shrine Guide
Hidden in Ichi City, the stunning maple leaf sanctuary - Tanzan Shrine check-in success! 🤳✨
📍Address: 319 Tonomine, Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture
🚗Transportation: About 20 minutes by bus from JR/Kintetsu Sakurai Station
📅Best time to see autumn leaves: Mid-November to early December
This shrine, full of history, was once Tonomine Myoraku-ji Temple! After the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, it became the current Tanzan Shrine, enshrining the powerful Fujiwara clan ancestor - Nakato Kamatari no Okami! 👑 This is one of the top spots for autumn leaves in the Yamato region, with photographers and tourists snapping photos like crazy even on weekdays! 📸
This year’s autumn leaves are outrageously beautiful!!
Every shot looks like a masterpiece✨
(Photos taken on November 18, 2025)
The thirteen-story pagoda inside the shrine perfectly matches the red leaves!
Strolling along the shrine path, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot is super soothing~
📸Photo tips:
• Recommended to visit in the early morning or late afternoon for soft light
• Wearing white or light-colored clothes will stand out better in photos
• Bring some small props, like a Japanese-style folding fan

[Kyoto] Kasagi Campsite and Kasagi Temple accessible by train
Even if you don't have a car, there is a campsite that you can get to in about an hour from Kyoto Station.
The campsite is covered in grass, and the Kizugawa River flows right in front of you.
You can see trains passing by from the cutely colored iron bridge, making it a great spot to interact with nature at your own pace.
Kasagi also has many hiking trails where you can enjoy the changing scenery of the four seasons.
At Kasagi Temple, you can see a giant Buddha painted on a large rock.
This temple is located in the mountains and is 800 meters in circumference, so it is almost like a hiking trail, but you can enjoy it in a different way from other spots as you can tour the old cultural heritage sites as you go around.

It's autumn! Let's go eat matsutake mushrooms! ️Matsutake rice bowl, a specialty with plenty of volume
Matsutake season has arrived
Riverside Oogi Restaurant
Second visit this month ← Isn't that going too far?
Today, I came with friends to try their famous Matsutake bowl and their famous large fried shrimp.
I've been going to this restaurant regularly since I was little.
Everything I eat is delicious.
It's located along R163.
Address: 30 Kusabatake, Kiriyama, Kasagi-cho, Soraku-gun, Kyoto
TEL: 0743-95-2150
Business hours: 9:00-20:00 Closed on Mondays and Thursdays (closed the following day if a holiday falls on a Monday)
Visited on October 9, 2023, a national holiday
Since it was a national holiday, there was a wait.
The smell of Matsutake mushrooms was in the restaurant... how happy.
As soon as I opened the lid of the Matsutake bowl, the smell of Matsutake mushrooms wafted through my nose.
Matsutake mushrooms, domestic beef, and onions.
The egg simmered in soy sauce is fluffy.
The soup is elegant and light, and even the pickles are delicious! ️
My friends also loved it, and told me how delicious it was. ✨
Thank you for the meal.

Specialty: Matsutake rice bowl, large fried shrimp, delicious restaurant
Riverside Oogi Restaurant
I've been going to this restaurant since I was little.
Everything I eat is delicious.
I'm also happy that they open early.
I visited on a Saturday just after 10am, but it was almost full.
It's located along R163.
From September to February, Oogi's specialty, the hearty matsutake udon and matsutake bowls, are available!
Address: 30 Kusabatake, Kiriyama, Kasagi-cho, Soraku-gun, Kyoto
TEL: 0743-95-2150
Business hours: 9:00-20:00 Closed on Mondays and Thursdays (closed the following day if a public holiday falls on a Monday)
I wanted to eat the matsutake bowl, but I had my favorite, the famous large fried shrimp set meal! ️
I've been coming here once every two months for the past few years, and it's my favorite
The tartar sauce is homemade too! ️
The tartar sauce is also delicious.
Of course, after eating three, I get a little bored, but I can also order them separately, so I often order half a Matsutake bowl for two people and two fried shrimp in the fall. This order might be better for women. Next time, I'll come for the Matsutake bowl, hopefully soon 🎵 #shrimp #matsutake #kansaitv #famousrestaurant #kyoto #lunch
