2024 Kashgar Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
Kashi, otherwise known as Kashgar, is a city in China’s extreme west, very close to the Tajikistan border. It is situated in the Xinjian Uyghur Autonomous Region, home to China’s Muslim Uyghur ethnic minority. Because of the Muslim influence, the city is very different from others in China. It is home to China’s largest mosque. Id Kah, and the tomb of Abakh Khoja, considered by many Uyghers to be a prophet second in importance only to Mohammed. It is the rare and brave traveler who makes his or her way to Kashgar, and while specific tourist attractions and activities are few, the unique culture and lifestyle of the local people are an extremely interesting and spiritual experience.

A city in China with a fairy tale vibe, reminiscent of One Thousand and One Nights
💚Kashgar, a vibrant ancient city.
The architecture here still carries the colors of the Western Regions, and you rarely hear Mandarin on the streets, as if you have stepped into the fairy tale book of One Thousand and One Nights.
.
💛Kashgar is also the filming location for the movie The Kite Runner, with a romance that rivals Kabul in Afghanistan, but without any safety concerns.
(The safety level in Kashgar is almost as good as not having to worry about losing anything on the streets.)
·
What is Kashgar?
It is the Shule Kingdom, one of the thirty-six kingdoms of the Western Regions, the crossroads of the Eurasian continent, and the meeting point of three major religions and four great civilizations.
Zhang Qian has been here, Xuanzang has been here, and Marco Polo has been here.
When you stand on a high point in the ancient city and look into the distance, your gaze may inadvertently meet that of Xuanzang from a thousand years ago.
·
How to explore Kashgar?
1. Of course, you must stroll through the old city.
The old city of Kashgar is also called Kashgar, divided into east and west districts. Entering from the Id Kah Mosque is the west district of the ancient city, and the east district is opposite the Id Kah Mosque, with a sign saying "Han Bazaar" at the entrance.
Famous spots like Rainbow Alley, Bag Alley, the century-old teahouse, and the Id Kah Mosque are all in the west district.
I also recommend visiting the west district. There's no need to go to the internet-famous spots; just wander from the main road into the side alleys where mostly locals live. It's quiet and beautiful.
·
2. Left hand pilaf and lamb skewers, right hand coffee and tea.
Besides exploring the ancient city, another must-do is eating and drinking.
Kashgar has many must-visit eateries, and you definitely shouldn't miss the cuisine of southern Xinjiang.
Moreover, prices in Kashgar are very affordable. If you like lamb skewers, you can have them every day.
Teahouses and coffee shops are also a must-visit. I recommend the teahouses in the ancient city.
Kashgar's coffee shops are beautiful, sitting on exotic streets drinking coffee, with local children coming over to chat, it's very chill.
Must-try foods in Kashgar: yogurt, pilaf, lamb skewers, steel meat, roasted pigeon, fried rice noodles, yogurt...
·
How not to get lost in the ancient city?
When strolling in the ancient city of Kashgar, you must learn to read the floor tiles.
Hexagonal tiles can lead to any main road in the ancient city;
Horizontally laid tiles mean there's no road ahead;
Tiles with arrows indicate a clear path ahead;
·
About accommodation
There are many accommodation options in Kashgar, but it's not recommended to stay inside the ancient city as carrying luggage there is difficult. Budget hotels near the entrance of the ancient city are more suitable.
If you want exclusive panoramic views of the ancient city, you can stay at Zhe·Ka.
Accommodation in Kashgar is hard to book during peak season, so plan ahead!
·
Transportation in Kashgar
Taxis are easy to hail in Kashgar, and if you're moving around the ancient city area, the fare is usually the starting price.
If you're not in a hurry, you can take the bus, and both WeChat and Alipay are accepted.
Returned from freezing in Xinjiang, almost collapsed
Sisters, this is not an exaggeration, make sure to prepare the necessary items!
Not just pretty clothes, but also essential warm clothing, otherwise, you might really freeze.
【Items to avoid bringing】
❌Hats that expose the top of your head: Wearing them all day will directly sunburn your scalp, and if you wear them throughout the trip, the damage could be irreversible.
❌Hats that expose the top of your head: Do not bring these hats! They will sunburn your hair parting, causing redness and even hair loss and peeling, it's too tragic.
❌Shoe covers: These are quite useless, they are not non-slip at all when it rains.
❌Ethnic shawls: Easy to clash with others, heavy, and not as warm as a windbreaker.
❌Thermos: Don't bring it, drinking hot water in summer will make you sweat more, and it's heavy. Buying bottled water is more convenient.
❌Sun protection masks: These masks are too stuffy, Xinjiang's weather is hot, wearing them for a long time makes your face hot and humid, which can breed bacteria.
❌Leather bags: If they get damaged during the trip, it will be heartbreaking. It's better to bring a straw bag, which not only matches the grassland scenery but also looks good in photos, and you won't feel bad if it gets damaged.
.
【Items to bring】
✅Outdoor hats with hard brims or straps, these hats won't be blown away by the wind.
✅Hats that do not expose the top of your head, to protect your scalp well.
✅Bring disposable four-piece sets (especially for girls), using disposable ones is more reassuring.
✅Buy disposable non-slip shoe covers! Non-slip is key! Remember this!
✅Bring a small bottle of mosquito repellent spray.
✅Do not forget power banks, chargers, and charging cables, phones run out of battery quickly in Xinjiang, you'll be taking photos and editing them all the time.
✅Prepare 5 packs of wet wipes, after eating fruits or snacks in the car, sticky hands really need wet wipes.
.
Some suggestions
📌If you go to Xinjiang, bring various beautiful dresses, and don't forget to bring a sun-protective jacket, you can take it off when taking photos.
📌It is recommended to bring a sunshade umbrella, besides sun protection, because some places in Xinjiang have poor WC hygiene conditions, you might need to solve it in nature, and the umbrella will come in handy.
📌It's fun to tour around Sayram Lake, the lake is greatly affected by the weather, the color of the sky determines the color of the lake water.
📌Be sure to bring a windbreaker or thicker clothes, the temperature difference between morning and evening is large, and the temperature difference between the mountains and the plains is also significant.
📌The ultraviolet rays in Xinjiang are very strong, be sure to choose high SPF sunscreen products.

Precautions:
Remember to rent a car in advance on Ctrip or other reliable platforms before departure, it is recommended to place an order on the platform for security. (Insurance is a must because the distances between each scenic spot in Xinjiang are far, and the driving distance is long, in case of emergency)
Xinjiang has a large temperature difference between day and night, prepare 1-2 pieces of thick clothing.!
For the long self-driving journey, remember to go to the supermarket to purchase some food for when you get hungry on the road and to replenish energy.
Remember to bring your ID card and student ID, if you go to southern Xinjiang or some scenic spots in Kanas, you need to apply for a border pass, which can be done at a nearby police station.
Travel tips and outfit suggestions:
1. Remember to wear brightly colored clothes on the grasslands for better photos (such as yellow, pink, purple, etc.).
2. You must visit the pine trees at Sayram Lake, although it's tiring and you may want to give up many times, as long as you persist to the top you will find it's all worth it as you can overlook the entire panorama of Sayram Lake and Guozigou Bridge.
3. Bring some sunglasses and hats for sun protection and also as a fashionable item for better photos (girls can buy a triangular scarf to wear on their head for amazing photos).
ps: 'Northern Xinjiang for scenery, Southern Xinjiang for culture', the moment you arrive in Xinjiang, your story begins. Every moment is like a movie playing, the beauty of Xinjiang, no words in this world are enough to describe it.
Take a trip to the human world, and get drunk in the old streets of Kashgar
The ancient city of Kashgar is the place in Xinjiang with the richest local flavor and the deepest cultural heritage, encompassing both natural and cultural landscapes. Unlike the green waters and mountains of Northern Xinjiang, the lakes, deserts, glaciers, and red valleys of the Pamir Plateau are equally stunning!✌
✨Special Attractions
📍Kashgar Old Town: Rich in Western Region style, this irreplaceable ancient city of a thousand years is also the filming location of the movie 'The Kite Runner'.
📍White Sand Lake: The pure white and ultimate blue are just around the next corner, turn and there is the beautiful scenery☘️
📍N39 Desert: Named after the 39th parallel north in the Taklamakan Desert! The setting sun dyes the sand dunes red, and at night, campfires are lit, fireworks are set off, and the stars in the night sky of the desert are counted while slightly tipsy.
📍Bandi Lan'er Lake: The sapphire that sparkles in the plateau lake💎 It reflects different shades of blue at different times and seasons! The blue is pure and penetrates the heart...
📍Panlong Valley Road: Having walked all the winding paths today, from now on life is a straight road ahead.
🍝🍝Special Cuisine
☑️Roasted Eggs
Eggs, quail eggs, and goose eggs are slowly roasted on charcoal sprinkled with ash, constantly turned, and when eaten, they are dipped in a secret Southern Xinjiang seasoning that is unforgettable.
☑️Sour Milk Zongzi
Before eating, flatten with a tool, then drizzle with sour milk, sugar syrup, honey, papaya sauce, fig jam, etc. The locals have also given it a nice name called 'National Unity'.
☑️Noodle Lungs, Rice Intestines
Making these two dishes is very troublesome, with complex procedures and time-consuming. The taste is sour but not spicy, very delicious. Nang Pit Meat
The nang pit meat here is different from other places, with chicken egg liquid, turmeric powder, and other seasonings wrapped on lamb, then baked in a nang pit, crispy on the outside and tender inside, served with sweet and not spicy raw onions, amazing😍

If you haven't been to Kashgar, you haven't been to Xinjiang❤️
Kashgar Old City really gives too many surprises
I walked 20,000 steps to summarize the super complete shooting spots for everyone
The old city is very large, it is recommended that everyone plan the route in advance to avoid detours
❤️East City:
1. "I love Kashgar"
That's the slow folk customs, you can see the rainbow stairs on the way
2. Kashgar TV Tower:
Follow the rainbow stairs all the way up to the top, turn around and it is the Kunlun Tower shooting spot
3. Three Thousand Collection Homestay in the city
❤️Western Regions
4. Mused Coffee
5. Old City Corner
You need money to take pictures, but it's worth it. The fruit tea is very good, and there are many photo spots in the store
6. The house of the Bayi old man
7. Sky Garden
8. Purple Romantic Alley, diagonally opposite to Xiangfei Tea House
9. Rainbow Alley
10. Sack Alley (opposite Rainbow Alley)
11. Street antique shop
Kashgar Old City
The old city of Kashgar is not as good for strolling as imagined, but I would still visit if I come again
The off-season old city of Kashgar is somewhat bleak
Many shops are closed
It's deserted, and I couldn't feel the bustling scene of the old city.
If you just want to check in at popular spots and take cosplay photos, then traveling in the off-season would be a good time (⚠️Some popular spots are also closed in the off-season: such as the rooftop photos many people take). No need to wait, take as long as you want. We walked from the east city to the west city, and then walked back to the east city from the west city. Apart from the people living in the old city, there were hardly any tourists.
The old city of Kashgar is divided into east and west areas, separated by a main road
1⃣️【East Area】: Opening ceremony (one at 10:30 and 18:00 each), Sky Garden, TV tower internet celebrity spot, Corner Coffee, rooftop photos, Bazaar food street, etc. are all in the east area; the east area is relatively lively and larger
2⃣️【West Area】: Century-old teahouse, Rainbow Lane, Cloth Bag Box, Antique Street, Oil Painting Street are all here;
🌟There will be relatively fewer places to eat and stay in the off-season, but there is absolutely no need to worry. It is recommended to play for 2 days, one day in the east area and one day in the west area.
This time is just a meeting, and I will definitely experience the bustling old city of Kashgar when I go again in the peak season.

The Pearl Of Silk Road | Kashgar
#familytrip
Kashgar, situated in the western part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is one of the oldest cities in China with a history spanning over two millennia. It has served as a crucial hub along the ancient Silk Road as it found itself strategically located at the convergence of multiple Silk Road routes, making it a natural meeting point for merchants, travelers, and caravans coming from different directions. Silk, spices, precious metals, textiles, and various other commodities passed through Kashgar.
The city has a distinct cultural blend, influenced by its position at the crossroads of various civilizations. The majority of the population in Kashgar consists of Uyghurs, a Turkic ethnic group, contributing to the city's unique cultural identity. However along the history various other ethnic groups, including Turks, Persians, Arabs, and Chinese, interacted and left their mark on the city's cultural landscape.
Kashgar's Old City, can be characterized by narrow winding streets and traditional mud-brick houses, provides a glimpse into its historical past. The Id Kah Mosque, one of the largest mosques in China, and the Abakh Khoja Tomb are notable landmarks, reflecting the city's Islamic heritage.
The bustling Sunday Market is a vibrant display of local life, where you can find a variety of goods, from spices to traditional Uyghur crafts. The city's location near the Pamir Mountains adds to its scenic beauty, offering picturesque landscapes.
Tips and Tricks ⁉️
🤔During Chinese holiday season prices of accomodation spike exponentially. If you know about your travel plan in advance it is highly suggested to make an accomodation reservation as much in advance as possible. Especially if you're foreigner.
😊During your stay, the hotel you'll be staying at will be responsible for your visit registration to the local authorities (absolutely normal procedure in China) and will act as your tour agent. So don't hesitate to ask any questions on how to get somewhere you want, give you a recommendation and help out to arrange a trip for you. Exchange any contact information with the receptionist for any inquiries or any situation where you'd need them to help.

Every person who travels to Xinjiang will eventually return to southern Xinjiang
1. Must-visit attractions in southern Xinjiang:
1️⃣ Kashgar: The largest Aitigaer Mosque in Xinjiang, the exotic Gaotai residential houses, the unique Karakuri Lake, and the Mustag Peak it reflects, as well as the highest-altitude port - Khunjerab Pass. Its unique Western Region cultural atmosphere, desolate and atmospheric plateau scenery, tall and pure snow mountain scenery, all touch every inch of your nerves.
2️⃣ Aksu: Aksu has played a huge role since ancient times. At its most glorious, the Aksu region was an important post on the "Ancient Silk Road" connecting Central Asia, West Asia and the Central Plains.
3️⃣ Hotan: Hotan is famous for its jade, but as an important town on the southern line of the ancient Silk Road, it has left many ruins such as the Niya ruins, the Aksu ancient city, the Mailik Awati ancient city, and the Karadun ancient city; the ancient woodblock prints, silk carpet fragments, gold Buddha statues, mummies, ancient coins, etc. unearthed here all shine with the brilliance of ancient civilization.
4️⃣ Bayingolin: Most of Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture is located at the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains and the north and northeast edge of the Tarim Basin, with a small part located at the southeast edge of the Tarim Basin and between the Kunlun Mountains and the Altun Mountains. Here, there are not only rich alpine grasslands, but also beautiful Bosten Lake, and the most mysterious and desolate Taklamakan in China.

Romantic hot balloon experience in Xinjiang
Riding a hot air balloon over the beautiful ancient town of Kashgar was one of the highlights of my trip to Xinjiang.
This is a wonderful way to get a complete view of Kashgar Ancient Town, one of the most historical and popular destinations in Kashgar.
You can sign up for this experience in the hot air balloon booth at the front gate of the town. It roughly lasts about 15 minutes!
I chose to ride during sundown, as it can get really hot during the day, especially since you will be under the flames of the balloon.
Definitely recommend this experience for those who are curious and not afraid of heights!

Kashgar | It's better to come early, but the best time is always now.
Stayed in Kashgar for 3 days, every day was very happy. I know that this city is becoming more and more like Lijiang. If I had come earlier, I might have felt more charm about Kashgar. However, the development of the city always involves contradictions. Going out will inevitably bring impact and pain, but staying in place will still be a long-term unfairness.
As a region that gathers multiple ethnic groups, being able to preserve their own language, culture, and traditions is a miracle in my opinion. However, whether such a miracle can bring about good treatment from capital is a question mark.
Of course, I am just a passerby who happened to come here. My simplest wish is that Kashgar will always be a joyful city.
When the weather is good, getting lost in the alleys of the old city is the best way to open up. The children here are so cute that they often greet you actively. Who can refuse such angelic smiles? Most locals are optimistic and easy-going, and it feels like they are always dancing with joy, even if you don't buy anything, you can still chat happily. The sunlight falls on every old building, and the changes in light and shadow bring different atmospheres. Walking quietly among them is like being a part of an oil painting. I couldn't help but participate in the Kashgar old city travel photography, squeezing among a group of Western princesses is also a rare impression of the Western Regions.
On the day when the sandstorm struck, everyone was not setting up stalls outdoors, but it would be super interesting to go from one characteristic small shop to another. Go to Zahra Cake Shop and have a piece of characteristic cake full of raisins and nuts. Regret not packing a few more boxes to take home; go to the coffee shop at the end of the alley and have a cup of desert coffee that is even more bitter than my life; go to the non-trendy old tea house and have a cup of Kashgar's local specialty medicinal tea, and listen to the uncles' intoxicated Dotar performance... Then go to Jiulongquan Inn to take a photo, and take a distant view of the high platform residential buildings full of historical sense in the sand. With a little personal prayer, I hope that when I come to Kashgar again next time, these places I like will still be there.
I have said that every moment of meeting with me is the best scenery. Whether it's sunlight or sand and dust, every aspect of Kashgar, I am glad to have met you.

I thought I was transported to Morocco.....
Site : Kashgar Old City In Kashgar Perfecture, Xinjiang, China
Location : China, Xinjiang, Kashgar Prefecture, Kashgar, Yawage Rd, 艾提尕尔清真寺旁 邮政编码: 844099
Getting here : Fly in from Major cities in China , or you can take a slow train from Urumqi....I did both, both experiences is amazing!!!
Worth the visit : 100% 💯
Kashgar old city has a 2000 years worth of history. The design is Islamic influenced that I felt like I was transport to Morocco when I came here for the 1st time....The 2nd time I am already a pro coz I walk everywhere on foot the 1st time.....There is so much interesting things to see. Every alley in the old town has it's own speciality for example black smith alley, carpenter alley, garment and textile needlework, bakery, and butcher. So if you need something just go to the allocated alley. Kashgar lies in an oasis before towns were built-up in the area. Kashgar is in the silk route which connects the west to the east for commerce in the old ages. Kashgar predominantly populated by Uighurs an Turks. Language spoken is Uighurs, Chinese and some speak russian. The food there is mostly influenced by food that was transported during the silk route expedition era. Food like semolina and pomegranate juice, spices, mutton fried crepes are widely available......The food is totally different from typical chinese food. Love it over there and it snowed heavily in winter and turns the sky red during sunset....love love love
#passionpassport.

Once you enter in the old Town you do not feel like being in China. The street are marvelous, charismatic and quiet. The ambiance is relax and there are no other city quite like it in China. People where really friendly, the food was just amazing and I would recommend visiting to everyone I know. Not being able to travel abroad this is probably the closest you can be to be abroad/Central Asia. My Chinese friend had to say 'Ting bu dong' to locals so it was quite funny.

Another iconic Islamic building in the city of Kashgar is the Etihad Mosque. As a symbol of the city, it is like a reception room in southern Xinjiang. Business travellers from all corners of the country come to it and try to touch it and read it.
As the most influential mosque in Central Asia, the interior of Etihad is simple and solemn. There are not many statues and palaces. The endless Muslim believers are devout and devout, and can hear white quietly. The sound of the pigeon flapping its wings. It was a sight that was never seen in the incense temples and Taoist temples in the Central Plains. Perhaps this is the power of Islam's silence.
Kashgar in Xinjiang is a gourmet paradise, strolling around the old town, and the roadside family is very delicious.
On the last day of Kashgar, choose a better restaurant to comfort yourself and come to this Kashgar. One restaurant, Jinfu cuisine, exotic decoration, very ceremonial. Once you enter the waiter, you will come up with mint tea, court-style tea set, very feel, and you will order barbecue. Although the taste is average, it is very big. And win in the environment, suitable for the love of the value of the love of the ceremonies of the baby, if you have the opportunity to come to Kash, you can try
[Kashgar, Xinjiang] The first stop of K2G219 is Kashgar in southern Xinjiang. After we flew from different places to Kashgar, we set off to drive from Yecheng towards Tibet. As the national 5A tourist scenic spot, Kashgar Old Town is the best place to go.
There is a strong western style. You can enjoy the beautiful folk songs and dances at the opening ceremony, and you can appreciate the beauty of different buildings in the city. The most authentic Xinjiang cuisine is everywhere here. If you are a buy-and-buy person, the high-quality silk carpet here is definitely worth your income. A hospitable local friend will be happy to take a photo with you after permission. If you go here to play, you must remember to go to the opposite side of the city gate "Kashgar Ice Cream" shop to taste his home ice cream, will definitely leave you the most memorable impression. Reporting my name will definitely surprise you again and again. . . .
Bazaar, a Uighur language, means a market.
Kashgar Bazaar is the international trade market of Central and Western Asia, located on the east bank of the Tuman River in the northeast corner of Kashgar City. This 250-acre, Kashi Grand Bazaar with 21 professional markets has a history of more than 2,000 years. It is known as the "Asia's largest market" in ancient times and is now the largest international trade market in Northwest China.
Kashi is a historical and cultural city on the ancient Silk Road. It is also a commodity distribution center. The business travel from Xi'an in the same year, whether you take the Tianshan South Road or the Tianshan North Road, meet here. Various local products, handicrafts, daily necessities, fruits and vegetables, production materials, and large and small animals in Kashgar and Xinjiang are available.
This is the place where the most concentrated and rich folk customs of Xinjiang Uygur are reflected.
