#SeptemberDestinations2025 Red represents the warmth of spring and symbolizes growth, hope, and the vitality of life. Documents indicate that during the Edo period, offering red torii gates was a form of prayer and fulfillment, and this custom has been passed down ever since. We departed from Saga Station and took the JR train to Hizen Kashima Station. From there, we took a 20-minute bus to Yutoku Inari Station. The shrine is accessible via the approach to the shrine. During weekdays, there were few tourists, and most of the shops along the approach were closed. Upon entering the shrine, the vermilion-colored buildings caught our eye. The shrine grounds are extensive, and you can ascend the stairs or take the elevator to the main hall, the Honden, 18 meters above the ground. You can also continue up the path to the summit for breathtaking views of the mountains and sea. I was particularly impressed by the wooden structure of the Honden, nestled against the hillside. It resembled a replica of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. While not as majestic, the vermilion color was just as impressive! In Japan, there are many Inari shrines like the Tudigong Temple in Taiwan, but not many are as spectacular as this one. If you have already come to Kyushu for a trip, you might as well come here for a visit!

#winterescape Experience not to be missed! The Two Stars 4047 is a specialized JR Kyushu sightseeing train showcase the scenic West Kyushu coastline between Takeo Onsen and Nagasaki (morning route). Unlike the usual JR trains, this train features a pearl-white design, retrofitted train cars with warm, wooden interiors, a dedicated "Lounge 40" car, and panoramic views of the Ariake Sea! It makes specific stops for sightseeing, local culture, and photo opportunities, typically including Hizen-Hama, Tara, and Isahaya. It is designed as a scenic, slow-travel train, with Hizen-Hama offering a renowned, brief, in-station sake-tasting experience. Though it was winter, temperature range between 3 to 7 degrees celsius. With the sun out, it was a perfect time to step outside to enjoy the picturesque scenery and fresh air! Don’t forget to take your camera along each time the train makes a brief stop. The train focuses on coastal views, specifically the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea. The interesting interior design of Lounge 40–Car 2 is a lounge with couches, a service counter, and bar-style seating, while the interior features wooden furniture, bamboo blinds, and artwork, giving it a cozy, luxurious feel. Passengers can pre-order specially curated bento boxes (like Saga beef) or buy some snacks and drinks onboard too! This is a pretty train offering a unique experience, I had great pleasure riding it. It was indeed a memorable experience! #January Destinations 2026 #4047 Twin Star Train I was very lucky to book the 4047 Twin Star Train during the three-day holiday in Japan. Since we bought the San'in-Sanyo-Kitakyushu Pass, we couldn't reserve seats before departure. The train ran from Takeo Onsen to Nagasaki, stopping at Hizen-Hamajuku, Tara Station, and Isahaya Station, where you could spend a little money to sample sake, ring the Koyo Bell, and even participate in a nori sushi-making activity on board. At the final stop, Nagasaki, you could take a streetcar to visit the Megane Bridge, the Catholic Church, and Glover Park. It was truly a very fulfilling day.

We stayed at the Saga New Otani Hotel this time, and the experience was excellent! Our itinerary was mainly spread over two days, with the third day spent purely at the airport preparing for departure. Day 1: We landed at 10:30 AM and arrived at the hotel to drop off our luggage before 12:00 PM. We then visited nearby attractions such as Saga Castle Ruins and a shrine. For lunch, we ate near Saga Station, and in the afternoon, we took a train to Karatsu City. In the evening, we returned to Saga and went shopping and dining at You Me Town. Day 2: After having breakfast at a convenience store, we headed to Hizen-Kashima Station and took a bus to Yutoku Inari Shrine. We spent the afternoon exploring the shrine before returning to Saga, where we shopped and had dinner in the city center before heading back to the hotel.

The vermilion gate stood out vividly under the sunlight, resembling the entrance to a serene mountain castle, welcoming every visitor who came to pay their respects. Passing through the gate, we were greeted by the lively atmosphere of the shrine's bustling shopping street. The air was filled with enticing aromas, and the shops offered a variety of unique items, from fox-shaped trinkets and traditional Japanese sweets to warm and fragrant snacks. Strolling and sampling the treats made the journey all the more enjoyable. Each shop had its own charm, reflecting the gentle daily life unique to the area around the shrine. After paying our respects at the main hall, we decided to venture higher, climbing the steps toward the inner sanctuary. Though the path was somewhat challenging, the occasional mountain breeze and the interplay of light and shadow through the trees made the ascent delightful. Upon reaching the inner sanctuary, the view suddenly opened up—below us lay the magnificent shrine complex, and in the distance, we could see the townscape of Kashima. The entire scene unfolded like a painted scroll. Standing quietly in the inner sanctuary, we clasped our hands in prayer once more, and the fatigue of the journey seemed to dissipate in that moment. Yutoku Inari Shrine is not just a place of worship; it is a spiritual walk that transitions from bustling activity to serene tranquility, from the plains to the heights. Before leaving, we returned to the shopping street to buy some snacks as souvenirs, allowing the beauty of the journey to linger a little longer.

After paying respects at the main hall, visitors can proceed to the inner shrine (located in the rear mountain area with a thousand torii gates along the hillside, requiring a 20-30 minute uphill climb). Don't miss trying the exclusive "Firecracker Yokan" on the shopping street in front of the shrine. Nearby Kashima City offers delicacies such as Saga beef barbecue, Yobuko squid sushi, or Takezaki crab. For lunch, the "Fox Feast" set meal in the temple town is highly recommended. To get there, take the JR Nagasaki Main Line limited express train to "Hizen-Kashima Station" (about 1.5 hours), then transfer to the Kashima Bus (Yutoku Line) for about 10 minutes to reach the shrine's front station. Purpose of the Trip See TeamLab! Eat delicious food! Soak in hot springs! Schedule Day 1 Fly from Haneda Airport to Saga Airport. There are no low-cost carriers or airlines serving the area. ANA operates five flights per day, with a flight time of approximately two hours. There's nothing around Saga Airport. While buses are an option, rental cars are recommended. For flight passengers, there's a 24-hour promotion for 1000 yen for two or more people. (This promotion seems to have been going on for quite some time.) One person pays 2000 yen per car. Two people pay 1000 yen, so even single travelers are cheaper. Rental cars are conveniently located next to the airport. Getting around is easy. First, head to Yutoku Inari Shrine. This shrine is quite large and historic. Then, drive along the coast to see the underwater torii gate of Ouo Shrine. It's beautiful at high tide. Tara Town, where this shrine is located, is a gourmet town famous for its oysters. We tried grilled oysters at an oyster shack. They were delicious, and the location right in front of the ocean was perfect. Then, we drove to Arita. Arita is synonymous with Arita ware. We enjoyed tea and sweets served in beautiful tea utensils at Arita Purcellin Lab. Then, we checked into Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel, home to teamLab. After checking in at the front desk, we were greeted by a fantastic view of the forest of lamps. The hot springs here are also amazing! Rakan no Yu has a sauna, an open-air bath, and is spacious. There's an Italian restaurant on the hotel grounds, so we made a reservation there for dinner. The food, made with local Saga ingredients, and the tableware was beautifully crafted. It's in a different location, about a five-minute walk away. It might be a bit difficult if it's raining. Day 2 We got up early and thoroughly enjoyed teamLab's forest of lamps. Of course, we also took a dip in the hot springs. For breakfast, we had Japanese food at the hotel. The nori seaweed was served in a heated container, and it was incredibly crisp. After checking out, we visited the Takeo Onsen Tower Gate and other attractions, then went to Yobuko to eat squid. I was so happy to eat such fresh squid. They even cooked the tentacles for me. We ate at the Underwater Fish Restaurant Manbo. We drove to Saga Airport and then flew to Tokyo. Photogenic Spots Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel, home to a TeamLab artwork. I recommend staying late at night or early in the morning, as there are fewer guests. Important Notes Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel does not have an elevator. This hotel is not suitable for elderly guests or those with small children, as moving around inside the hotel is difficult. Also, the reception area is dark due to the TeamLab artwork, so elderly guests and those with small children may find the darkness intimidating or uncomfortable. Transportation Public transportation is not very good, so a rental car is necessary for sightseeing. However, if you book in advance, the hotel offers a shuttle service from Takeo Onsen Station. The head shrine of Japan's Inari shrines is Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto. The other two equally renowned Inari shrines are Yutoku Inari Shrine in Saga Prefecture and Kasama Inari Shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture, collectively known as Japan's Three Great Inari Shrines. Our first stop on this trip to Saga was the famous and beautiful Yutoku Inari Shrine in Saga. Before entering the shrine, cherry blossoms were in full bloom in the parking lot, covering the entire hillside! Afterward, explore the Omotesando shopping street, where you'll find a wide selection of shrine-themed merchandise, Saga tea, and other souvenirs. Some shops also offer meals and sweets for guests to relax and enjoy. Weekdays are less crowded, making for a relaxing stroll. The foxes often depicted at Inari shrines are shrine messengers that appeared after the Middle Ages. Nearly all Inari shrines across Japan feature foxes instead of Komainu. Inari is a general term for the gods in charge of grain and food in mythology, including Kurautamimi, Toyoukihime, Hoshigami, Ogitohime, Waka-Ukame, and Miozujin. With the rise of industry, the Inari gods, once symbolic of fertility, began to symbolize wealth, becoming worshipped by the business community. Yutoku Inari Shrine boasts the largest number of shrines in Japan. Entering through the main gate, Yutoku Inari Shrine is a striking sight. The shrine grounds are vast, especially the main shrine! The building nestled against the mountainside resembles a replica of Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a truly magnificent sight. Its vibrant red complements the surrounding mountain scenery and foliage, making it even more beautiful. Yutoku Inari Shrine was founded in 1687, boasting over 300 years of history. It was founded by Princess Kayama-in, wife of Naotomo Nabeshima, then lord of the Kashima Domain, who married into the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The shrine, enshrining the deity of food, clothing, and shelter, is also dedicated to blessing the local crops, commerce, family fortune, and fisheries. The shrine's devout deity has earned it both prominence and fame. The shrine grounds feature ema (painted horses) for good luck and a charming ema for traffic safety. We joined in the prayers. To visit the main shrine or the main hall, follow the path leading up to the main shrine. The stairs leading up to the main shrine are located next to Iwasaki Shrine, and the shrine's main hall is at the top. From the top, you can overlook the grounds of Yutoku Inari Shrine, but the climb requires considerable leg strength. If you have more time, you can continue up to Oku-no-in and Mifuji-sha Shrine. The section above is lined with numerous torii gates, but the climb may be difficult for older people. You can also take an elevator directly up for a fee! Many businesses that have experienced strong profits donate a torii gate to the shrine. Unlike other shrines, Inari Shrine often features a row of large and small torii gates, making it a popular photo spot. It was a hot day. I took a bus from Saga to Inari Shrine, passing through rice fields and villages before arriving at the shrine. The shrine's atmosphere was wonderful. The wind chime path and thousand torii gates, along with the Okumiya overlooking the town, finally received a goshuin seal and amulet, which truly refreshed my tired body and mind. The fox statue was also very cute, making me want to linger longer.

The limited express train makes a special 17-minute stop at this station, inviting travelers to disembark for a drink and savor the warmth of the area. The renovated, wooden station has been restored to its original appearance since its opening in 1930. It features a tourist information center and a bar space called "HAMA BAR," and offers sake experience packages in collaboration with several local breweries. These packages are 1,000 yen each and come with three flavors: Junmai sake, Junmai Ginjo sake, and Junmai Daiginjo sake, with two sakes each. Paired with kasu-marinated cream cheese, they're delicious. The station also sells miso pork soup, its rich aroma particularly warming against the winter snow.
